2012 NFL Preseason Week 3: San Francisco at Denver
Atssportsline.com

San Francisco at Denver

Current line: Denver (-2/40)

San Francisco visits Sports Authority Field from Mile High Stadium in Colorado to face the Broncos on Sunday at 4pmET. Denver split their first two games as they fell to Seattle last week at home, 30-10. San Francisco is 1-1 in the preseason, falling at Houston, 20-9 last week.

Weather: 87 degrees with a 7% chance of rain.

San Francisco is coming off a 13-3 SU season, and they were 12-3-1 ATS and 7-9 Under. Last year, they went 2-2 ATS in the preseason. Jim Harbaugh, also in his second season, is 2-2 SU, 2-2 ATS and 1-3 Under. Denver is coming off an 8-8 season that was highlighted by a 29-23 overtime win over Pittsburgh at home. They also went 7-8-1 ATS and were 9-7 Over. Last year, they went 2-2 ATS in the preseason and John Fox (Den, Car) is 21-19 SU, 20-19-1 ATS and 19-20-1 Under in preseason. (all starts are from before preseason play began)

Outlook: Still shaking off the rust from a long injury-induced absence, Peyton Manning hopes to take another step forward in his comeback when the new Denver Broncos quarterback leads his team into a preseason battle with the San Francisco 49ers at Sports Authority Field.

Manning's health hasn't been an issue during training camp as the coveted free-agent acquisition continues his recovery from multiple neck surgeries that kept him out all of the 2011 season. The four-time NFL Most Valuable Player played the entire first half of last week's matchup with Seattle without incident, though the two interceptions he threw in the Broncos' 30-10 loss suggests his timing isn't quite there just yet.

The 36-year-old's overall performance was certainly encouraging, however. Manning completed 16 of his 23 attempts on the night and amassed 177 yards before exiting.

It was his first appearance at Sports Authority Field since choosing the Broncos over several other suitors, including the 49ers, shortly after being released by Indianapolis in March.

An improved effort may be tough to come by on Sunday, however, considering the 49ers return all 11 starters from a defense that yielded the second-fewest points and the fourth-fewest total yards during the team's 2011 turnaround. Houston's Matt Schaub did find some success in last weekend's preseason clash with San Francisco, though, with the veteran hitting on 11-of-14 throws for 128 yards and a touchdown to help the Texans to a 17-9 win.

The Broncos will get back a potential weapon for Manning this week, with rookie running back Ronnie Hillman set to make his belated pro debut after sitting out the first two contests with a hamstring strain.

Denver's defense is expected to have a few more healthy bodies added to the mix as well. Cornerback Tracy Porter (illness) and rookie linebacker Danny Trevathan (ankle) were both held out of the Seattle game but are probable for Sunday's tilt, while safety Quinton Carter (knee surgery) is a possibility to go after returning to practice this past week.

Defensive end Jason Hunter (torn triceps), right guard Chris Kuper (broken forearm), defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson (concussion), safety Jim Leonhard (knee) and linebacker Keith Brooking (hamstring) are among the Denver players not likely to suit up on Sunday.

The 49ers could be entering their "dress rehearsal" game of the preseason with a thinner running back corps after free-agent pickup Brandon Jacobs and speedy rookie LaMichael James both left last week's test with injuries. Jacobs sprained his left knee on his only carry of the night, while second-round draft choice James was carted off with a left ankle sprain in the fourth quarter.

James was back at practice on Tuesday, however, and may be available to face a Denver squad that was gashed for 228 rushing yards by the Seahawks a week ago.

Standout pass rusher Aldon Smith (hip), fellow outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks (undisclosed) and cornerback Perrish Cox (undisclosed) appear on track to return for San Francisco after all three were inactive against the Texans. Tight end Delanie Walker is questionable for this week as he continues to recover from a knee injury, but was spotted on the practice field in recent days.

Key Injuries: San Francisco: RB Brandon Jacobs (knee) is out indef. LB Aldon Smith (hip) is out. TE Delanie Walker (knee) is ? Denver: G Chris Kuper (forearm) is out 4-6 weeks. DE Jason Hunter (torn triceps), DT Kevin Vickerson (concussion), S Jim Leonhard (knee) and LB Keith Brooking (hamstring) are dbtful.

2012 NFL Preseason Week 3 Preview: Carolina at NY Jets
Atssportsline.com

Carolina at NY Jets

Current line: NY Jets (-2'/40')

Carolina visits East Rutherford, N.J. to take on the NY Jets at 8pmET on Sunday night. The Panthers lost split their first two games, winning last week at home against Miami, 23-17. The Jets lost both games and have scored just nine points in two games.

Weather: 76 degrees with a 18% chance of rain.

The Jets are coming off a disappointing 8-8 SU season, they were 7-9 ATS and 10-6 Over. Last year, they went 2-2 ATS in the preseason. Rex Ryan is 6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS and 8-4 Over in preseason. Carolina is coming off a 6-10 SU season, and they were 9-6-1 ATS and 10-6 Over. Last year, they went 1-3 ATS in the preseason. Ron Rivera, in his second season, is 1-3 SU, 0-4 ATS and 2-2 O/U. (all stats are from before preseason play began)

Outlook: The Jets will be striving for much improved results on that side of the ball in Sunday's encounter with the Carolina Panthers, a game in which both participants plan to play their starting units into the second half.

New York is the only team in the NFL that has failed to score a touchdown through the preseason's first two weeks, and it's mustered an anemic 160.5 total yards and 3.0 yards per play in losses to Cincinnati (17-6) and the New York Giants (26-3) -- both league lows as well.

The Jets were particularly poor in last week's clash with the rival Giants, netting a paltry 148 total yards and going 1-of-13 on third downs against the defending Super Bowl champions. A beleaguered offensive line also allowed quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow to be sacked a total of seven times on the night.

Sanchez did complete 9-of-11 attempts while running the offense the entire first half, but the under-fire third-year pro generated only 59 yards through the air and had an interception returned for a touchdown by Giants rookie cornerback Jayron Hosley.

Tebow was equally as uninspiring in his ballyhooed MetLife Stadium debut as a Jet. The popular former Heisman Trophy winner was an off-target 5-of-14 for 69 yards and took four sacks over the final two quarters.

Both quarterbacks were handcuffed by a depleted receiving corps that didn't have top target Santonio Holmes (ribs, back) or expected contributors Jeremy Kerley (hamstring) and Chaz Schilens (ankle) in uniform against the Giants. Holmes is slated to return for Sunday's tilt, though his snaps may be limited.

The Jets will also be making a notable change in the starting lineup, with much-maligned right tackle Wayne Hunter demoted to the second team in favor of Austin Howard, an undrafted third-year player who spent all of 2011 on Baltimore's practice squad.

The team attempted to replace Hunter, responsible for 2 1/2 of the Giants' seven sacks last week, just prior to the start of camp by acquiring former first-round pick Jeff Otah in a trade with the Panthers. The deal was voided after the injury-prone tackle failed his physical, however, and Carolina wound up releasing Otah afterward.

Carolina showed no such struggles on the offensive end in its Week 2 skirmish with Miami, with a razor-sharp Cam Newton leading the Panthers to 13 first- quarter points en route to a 23-17 decision over the visiting Dolphins.

The Panthers scored on all three of their early drives directed by Newton, with the 2011 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year racking up 119 yards on 8-of-11 passing and connecting on a touchdown strike to running back DeAngelo Williams.

Newton will be taking his shots against a Jets defense that won't have nose tackle Sione Pouha (back) or safety Eric Smith (sprained knee), though there's a good chance he'll be doing so minus the services of all-star receiver Steve Smith. The prolific veteran is doubtful to play on Sunday after coming down with an infection in his left foot during the week.

The Panthers were already without projected No. 3 wideout David Gettis, who remains on the physically unable to perform list while recovering from an ACL tear and a subsequent hamstring problem.

On a more positive note, Carolina linebacker Thomas Davis could see action for the first time during this preseason on Sunday. The hard-luck defender has torn the ACL in his right knee three times in the last three seasons and was held out of the club's first two outings with a calf strain.

Middle linebacker Jon Beason, who was inactive for the Miami game with a hamstring injury, may be kept out another week, however.

Key Injuries: Carolina: LB Jon Beason (ham) is dbtful. WR Steve Smith (foot) is dbtful. New York Jets: WR Santonio Holmes (ribs) is dbtful.. SS Eric Smith (MCL) is out for the preseason. NT Sione Pouha (back) is out.

Preseason Trends:
Carolina is 15-32 ATS vs. non-conference opponents
NY Jets is 8-1 ATS off a SU loss as a favorite

QB Rotations:
NY Jets
Mark Sanchez
Tim Tebow
Greg McElroy
Matt Simms (R)

Carolina
Cam Newton

What Bettors Need to Know: Sunday's NFL Action
By Covers.com

There are two games this Sunday in NFL preseason action as teams prepare to cut their rosters to 75 players Monday. We give you the essential tidbits to make your wagers.

Carolina Panthers at New York Jets (-2.5, 41)

The first team offense is clicking early for the Panthers and they scored a field-goal and two touchdowns in their first-quarter drives against Miami last game. Receiver Steve Smith missed a practice this week with a sore ankle so the first team could be missing him Sunday.

The Jets have said they’re not going to unleash the Wildcat in the preseason so Tim Tebow fans are just going to have to wait. In the meantime, Rex Ryan says he’d like to see Mark Sanchez air it out a little more. He might have wide receiver Santanio Holmes back Sunday night to help him do that.

San Francisco 49ers at Denver Broncos (-1, 40)

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith was sacked twice and hit had on several other occasions during his three series of action in last week's 20-9 loss to the Houston Texans. Smith was sacked a career-high 44 times last campaign, more than any other NFL quarterback. Developing schemes to protect the quarterback will be the club's focus on Sunday.

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning told the Denver Post the starters haven't been informed how long they'll play on Sunday against the 49ers. However, the pivot suggested the group might not be in the game as long because they played more than expected against the Seahawks in Week 2 of the preseason. Manning has completed 20 of 30 pass attempts for 221 yards this preseason and has been picked off three times.

The Broncos hold an 18-15 advantage in their all-time preseason series with San Francisco and have prevailed in nine of the last 11 warm-up contests between the clubs.

SNF - Panthers at Jets
By Chris David
VegasInsider.com

Week 3 of the NFL preseason concludes Sunday when the Jets and Panthers meet in a primetime battle. The action starts at 8:05 p.m. ET from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey and NBC will be providing national coverage.

Oddsmakers sent the Jets out as three-point favorites for the dress rehearsal but that number has dropped to 2 ½ at most betting shops and even 1 at a few offshore outfits.

It's hard to disagree with the move, since New York (0-2 straight up, 0-2 against the spread) hasn't been sharp in its first two preseason games, especially on offense.

The Jets have put up a total of nine points in the two losses and they haven't scored an offensive touchdown against the Bengals (6-17) and Giants (3-26). Even though it's just the preseason, New York is ranked dead last in total offense.

Head coach Rex Ryan has stated that all starters will play into the third quarter tonight, which means Mark Sanchez will get the start at quarterback. Tim Tebow will relieve him in the second-half and close out the game. Ryan also said that neither of the two signal callers will play in Week 4's preseason duties, so this will be there last chance to shine.

Sanchez and the offense should get a boost tonight when wide receivers Santonio Holmes (rib) and Jeremy Kerley (hamstring) return to the field. Holmes is the Jets' lone deep-threat and is expected to get 10 to 15 snaps against the Panthers.

If there has been a positive for the Jets, then look at the defense. Even though 43 points were posted by the Bengals and Giants, 23 of those came in the first-half against regulars. And the only two touchdowns came on an interception return and the other on a blocked punt return.

The secondary won't have Yeremiah Bell tonight, but Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie still form a great tandem on the outside and LaRon Landry has provided big sticks at the safety spots.

New York will face a tough test tonight when Carolina and the "Cam Newton" show visit. Newton has looked sharp in the preseason, especially last week. The Panthers scored 17 points on three drives behind Newtown, who finished 8-of-11 for 119 yards and a touchdown pass.

Everybody knows Newton is a playmaker but he's also fortunate to have a sound running game. The Panthers have two explosive running backs in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, plus the addition of Mike Tolbert is a huge upgrade at fullback.

The passing attack will be without wide receiver Steve Smith (foot) tonight. Brandon LaFell, Seyi Ajirotutu and Louis Murphy will try to fill the void, which won't be easy against the Jets' secondary.

Similiar to the Jets' Ryan, Carolina head coach Ron Rivera said his starters might play into the second-half as well. Rivera explained his strategy for Sunday, "Ideally, we try to put a number on it anywhere between 36-45 (plays) and you feel really good about that, especially if you play well. If we can emulate what we did in the first half last week and kind of dragged into the third quarter, I'd be very pleased with that. Realistically, who knows? But at least until the third quarter."

Defensively, Carolina hasn't looked great in the preseason. In Week 1, they gave up six scores (4 FGs) to Houston and the 26-13 setback could've been worse. In the Week 2 win over Miami (23-17), the Dolphins moved the ball well at times and actually had a chance to win the game late.

The combination of Carolina's juggernaut offense and suspect defense usually creates easy 'over' tickets and that's been the case in the preseason. The 'over' has cashed in each of the first two games and the total has been pushed up from 38 ½ to 40 ½ points for Sunday. Something will have to give on Sunday since the Jets have seen both of their preseason games go 'under.'

If you're looking to jump on a trend, then you should fade the AFC East according to VegasInsider.com expert Chip Chirimbes. "At this time the AFC East looks like the weakest division in all of football. Between the Dolphins, Bills, Jets and even the Patriots they all have been terrible this preseason. They have a combined record of 1-10 and outside of New England, nobody can score."

Carolina is listed as plus-120 (Bet $100 to win $120) on the money-line and taking that price instead of the short points seems like the better option. However, road wins in the preseason haven't been easy for the Panthers. The team has dropped nine straight exhibition games on the road, with the last victory coming August of 2007 against the Giants (24-21).

These two teams did meet in the 2010 preseason and the Jets earned a 9-3 decision over the Panthers.
