I'm recommending a play on Xavier minus the points on Tuesday. Lack of depth, injuries and poor shooting all came together on Saturday as St. John's lost 70-45 at Butler for the Red Storm's 10th loss in a row (we had Butler on these pages). It's a bad sign when your leading scorer goes 0-for-12 from the floor as Shamorie Ponds did against the Bulldogs. St. John's is 2-5 ATS its last seven games and is shooting 41.9 percent this season compared to 50.0 percent for Xavier, which averages 84.7 points per game and has had six days off since its 89-70 rout of Marquette. Xavier has won four straight, including a 73-64 road win against Seton Hall. The Musketeers are 22-8 ATS their last 30 games and 11-4 ATS their last 15 road contests. They're led by the trio of Trevon Bluiett (18.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game), J.P. Macura (13.0 ppg) and Kerem Kanter (10.0 ppg). St. John's is 1-5 ATS its last six home games. There are a lot of stars in this matchup headed by Jimmy Butler, Karl-Anthony Towns, DeMar DeRozan and Andrew Wiggins. So naturally the total has to be high. But is the high total justified? I say the perception of a high scoring game is wrong. The Raptors rank among the top-five in defensive efficiency at home. They are fourth in the league in defensive field goal percentage and 10th in fewest points allowed per game. Toronto has held seven of its last 11 home opponents to fewer than 100 points. Minnesota managed only 100 points against Atlanta on Monday night. The Hawks rank 23rd in defensive scoring and 26th in field goal percentage. The Timberwolves shouldn't be looking to push tempo either playing for the third time in four days and second in two nights. Both Jeff Teage (1-for-16 in his last two games) and DeRozan (18-of-52 in his last three games) are in shooting slumps. Usually it takes good 3-point shooting to reach a total this high. But neither team is very good from beyond the arc. The Raptors rank 24th in 3-point shooting percentage while the Timberwolves are even worse ranking 27th.

Your Tuesday freebie is the Musketeers over the Red Storm.
Not much cooking these days at St. John's, as the Red Storm absorbed yet another loss - their 10th in a row - in blowout fashion at Butler on Saturday. The Johnnies are now on a 2-5 spread slide with 3 straight spread losses during their current tumble.
Into town comes an Xavier team that has won their last 4 games. The only non-cover in that span was an 88-82 home win over the same St. John's team they will face tonight.
The Musketeers have won the last 5 series meetings versus the Red Storm, but have only covered once during that 5-game win streak. Expect them to cover tonight though, as the X-Men average a full 12-points per game more than their counterparts, and the make-up of this Top-Ten team is not the one that will allow a banana peel slip up tonight as Chris Mack's team looks to protect a "high line seed" come March Madness.

Reason: Your free play for Tuesday, January 30, 2018 is in the NBA contest between the Portland Trailblazers and the LA Clippers. The Clippers making the big move so far in the NBA season with their trade. The Clippers have traded forward Blake Griffin to the Detroit Pistons for Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, Boban Marjanovic, a protected first-round pick and a 2019 second-round selection. And, according to reports, the Clippers may still be shopping for more young players as they look to be in a major rebuilding mode. Harris, the big piece of this pie, is not expected to play tonight vs the Blazers. That will leave LA a bit shorthanded. The last eight meetings between these clubs in LA have gone UNDER. Add to that the state of flux that the Clippers are in and I don't expect a lot of points out of them here tonight. I'm going with the UNDER.
