College Football Week #5: MAC Champs Get Mad
by: Brian Gabrielle

Central Michigan, the 2006 MAC champions, isn't getting a lot of love from the wise guys, and perhaps with good reason. This team got torched 52-7 at Kansas to begin the year, lost by 23 at Purdue and, worst of all, were shocked at home last week by North Dakota St. by 30 points. That's not the way to defend one's title.

Still, I don't think they're getting enough respect Saturday against Northern Illinois. Garrett Wolfe is gone for UNI (he was college football's leading rusher in '06, and was last seen as a third-round draft pick this April by the Chicago Bears), and while Justin Anderson has done a good job replacing Wolfe so far, he's not the same kind of player. There are a few other factors at work in this game that send me the Chippewas way:

* For all the talent Central Michigan lost last year (including offensive linemen Joe Staley (an NFL first-rounder) and Drew Mormino, and defensive end Dan Bazuin, one of the best defensive players in MAC history), they returned last year's MAC Freshman of the Year in QB Dan LeFevour, a very good lead wideout in Bryan Anderson, a few solid running backs, and three of last year's starting O-line members.

* NIU is one of the youngest teams in the MAC, and if CMU's pass defense is shaky, so is the Huskies'. And I trust LeFevour to go to town on UNI more than I trust Dan Nicholson to go ballistic for the Huskies. Northern Illinois is also 1-3 (as is CMU), but they've played a far weaker schedule, including non-conference losses to Southern Illinois and Idaho.

* This is an emotional revenge game for the Chippewas. They lost only one MAC game last year, and it was in DeKalb, a blowout 31-10 loss. Plus, UNI has beaten CMU straight up in nine consecutive seasons. You have to go back to 1997 to find Central Michigan a winner in this game, which is a massive source of frustration for the Chippewas.

* This is Central Michigan's homecoming game, toward which they were most assuredly looking last week in the bad loss to NDSU. There's a reason the school made the team they can't beat into their homecoming game: to gain an emotional advantage.

* CMU is 8-0 against the spread in their last eight games as a home favorite and 10-1-1 ATS in their last 12 home games overall. They're also 14-3-1 ATS in their last 18 conference games. Meanwhile, despite having featured the country's leading rusher last year, UNI is 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games overall, and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 MAC games.

Granted, Northern Illinois has simply owned Central Michigan for a decade, so we're buying into a losing streak here. But CMU has a quick-strike, big-play offense that should be able to take advantage of a young and shaky UNI secondary, which has been prone to allowing huge plays, including six scores of 26 yards or more in just four games. UNI has also collapsed with leads in games those against Southern Illinois and Idaho already this year. It'll take exorcising a lot of ghosts, but I think UNI is still living off the Wolfe name a little, to be less than a field-goal underdog visiting the defending MAC champs. Let's make history. Take Central Michigan (-2.5) hosting Northern Illinois.

Last Week: Get this. Not only did San Jose St. throw a 31-yard TD pass with 53 seconds left to take a 23-20 lead on Utah St. last week. They proceeded to celebrate and get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which led them to boot the ensuing kickoff from their own 15-yard line. The kick bounced high at the 50, and San Jose St. recovered it, and ran out the clock. Man, are we living right, or what? To our credit, SJSU QB Adam Tafralis did come back and play in this game as we said he would, and racked up 35-of-48 for 426 yards and three scores. We were dead in the water when it was 20-16 Utah St. (we had SJSU getting 3.5 points), but that late score, and the late shenanigans thereafter, sure did help. For the season, then, our free plays are a hearty 4-0 against the spread.
