NBA Slam Dunk Game of the Day!

Play On: Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks have been one of the biggest surprises of this early NBA season. They come into this game at 6-2 with just their second loss of the season coming last night to this same Nets team. Josh Smith has been out for four games with an injury but that hasn’t hurt the Hawks yet as their other young talent has picked up the slack. Our math model project Atlanta as our strongest play on the board tonight, and has them winning by 18-points in this game. We are getting great line value here too as the Hawks should be at least 12.5 point favorites. New Jersey is the 23rd ranked defense and the 27th ranked offense in the NBA thus far. On the season the Nets are shooting just 42.6% from the field and allowing opponents to hit 45%. Atlanta on the other hand is the exact opposite with a team average of 45.2% from the field while allowing just 42.1%. At home the Hawks are even better offensively as they shoot over 48%. In last night’s game the Nets weren’t the “norm” as they shot 47.5% from the field and got 30-points from point guard Devin Harris who had been out the past two games with an ankle injury. Now playing the second night of a B2B might be too much to ask for a player that relies on his quickness with a gimpy ankle. The Hawks played pretty well last night but just couldn’t overcome the “home cooking” of the Nets as New Jersey benefited from a +15-point advantage from the free throw line. We also don’t expect rookie center Brook Lopez to match his 25-point, 9-rebound game from last night. Take the Hawks minus the points!

Victorious Plays

Boston @ Milwaukee

Boston, after three games at home is not visiting Milwaukee to face the Bucks. Boston is a team that likes to dominate the pace of a game, playing a great defensive type of game and at the offensive side they have players that like to do things well, not with speed. Milwaukee at home is a strong team and today we expect them to create some difficulties to Boston offense. In today's game we expect a low pace game with Boston controlling it from its beginning till the end. Close game and a low scoring one is what we expect. Go for the Under.
Recommendation: 2* Under 182

Oklahoma @ Philadelphia

Philadelphia is playing their 3rd game in the last four days and yesterday they spent a lot of energy after having to close a gap of more than 20 points to end up winning by a two point margin against Indiana. On the other side we have an Oklahoma team that has been struggling to win a game but have covered 44% of all those games. In today's game we expect a low pace game with Philadelphia trying to slow the game down after spending too much energy in yesterday's game. Oklahoma covering can also be a great choice but we thing the best play in this game is the Under.

Recommendation: 3* Under 190.5

New Jersey @ Atlanta

Back to back game after these two teams faced each other yesterday at New Jersey. This line is over inflated due to the start of the season Atlanta did winning all of their first four games by more than 10 points. Since then they have shown some lower intensity and the lines are not yet showing that and therefore we think it's time to take advantage of that fact. With Devin Harris back to New Jersey squad we expect them to cover the spread.

Recommendation: 3* New Jersey +10

Dr Bob

3 Star Selection
***MINNESOTA (-14) over Bowling Green

Bowling Green returns all 5 starters from a team that was in the bottom half of the MAC last season, but they simply don’t have the talent to compete with Tubby Smith’s Golden Gophers, who landed a highly rated recruiting class that will make an immediate impact. Minnesota will probably be about the same as they were last season – a borderline NCAA tournament caliber team, but my ratings favor Minnesota by 15 points in this game and the Gophers apply to a 35-7 ATS subset of a 91-37-3 ATS early season angle that won for us with Michigan earlier in the week. The line has come down from an opening number of 16 points, so we have some line value to go along with the good situation. Minnesota played better against weaker competition last season and they were 4-1 ATS as a favorite of 12 points or more. Bowling Green, meanwhile, couldn’t compete with more talented teams last season (1-4 ATS as a dog of 10 points or more) and that same group of players shouldn’t be able to compete against a more talented Gophers squad in a good situation tonight. I’ll take Minnesota in a 3-Star Best Bet at -15 points or less and for 2-Stars at -15 ½ or -16 points.
