There are some incredible late-game matchups this Sunday as part of Week 5. The highest profile contest pits Tampa Bay (3-1) against defending champion Indianapolis (4-0). The Colts head coach Tony Dungy was the former coach for the Bucs before being forced out and eventually winning a title with Indianapolis. Ironically, when he was forced out of Tampa Bay, Jon Gruden came in and won a championship with that franchise against his former employer.
Speaking of past Super Bowl winners, San Francisco signal caller Trent Dilfer gets the starting assignment against Baltimore. Dilfer was the winning quarterback of Super Bowl XXXV for the Ravens.
In another game, San Diego has disappointed all season but a victory in this spot against Denver gets the Chargers right back into the AFC West race. The Broncos are always tough in Denver, but San Diego swept this season series last year straight up and against the spread. Now let’s breakdown some of Sunday’s late games.
**Ravens at 49ers**
-Caesars Palace opened Baltimore as a 3 ½-point road ‘chalk’ over San Francisco, with the total set at 35 ½. CBS Sports will begin its coverage of this contest at 4:15 p.m. ET from Monster Park.
-Baltimore (2-2 straight up, 0-4 against the spreads) had its modest two-game SU winning streak snapped with its loss to Cleveland last weekend as a four-point road favorite, 27-13. The combined 40 points landed directly on the closing total.
-Quarterback Steve McNair completed 34-of-53 passes for 307 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while Willis McGahee paced the ground game with 14 carries for 104 yards.
-San Francisco (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) is currently mired in a two-game SU and ATS losing skid after falling to Seattle last weekend as a two-point home underdog, 23-3. The combined 26 points never seriously threatened the 41-point closing total, helping the ‘under’ improve to 3-1.
-Quarterback Trent Dilfer was 12-of-33 passing for 128 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Running back Frank Gore had 16 carries for 79 yards in the loss.
-The Ravens routed the 49ers during the last meeting back in 2003 as a three-point home ‘chalk,’ 44-6. The combined 50 points toppled the 37-point closing total.
-Baltimore tight end Daniel Wilcox (toe), tackle Jonathan Ogden (toe), tight end Todd Heap (hamstring), wide receiver Derrick Mason (back) and cornerback Samari Rolle (illness) are ‘questionable’ against the 49ers.
-San Francisco wide receiver Jason Hill (hamstring) and defensive back Tarell Brown (hamstring) are ‘questionable’ versus the Ravens, while tight end Vernon Davis (knee) and left tackle Jonas Jennings (personal) are ‘out.’ Starting quarterback Alex Smith (shoulder) is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks, meaning Trent Dilfer is expected to start.
**Chargers at Broncos**
-Caesars Palace installed this AFC West matchup as a ‘pick,’ with the total set at 42 ½. CBS Sports will provide coverage of this matchup at 4:15 p.m. ET from Invesco Field.
-San Diego (1-3 SU and ATS) has dropped its last three games in a row SU and ATS after falling to Kansas City last weekend as a 12-point home ‘chalk,’ 30-16. The combined 46 points eclipsed the 40-point closing total, enabling the ‘over’ to cash the third game in a row.
-The Chargers entered halftime leading, 16-6, but were outscored by 24 points in the second half. Quarterback Philip Rivers completed 21-of-42 passes for 211 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions, while LaDainian Tomlinson had 20 carries for 132 yards and a score.
-Denver (2-2 SU, 0-4 ATS) dropped its second game in a row after falling to Indianapolis last weekend as a 10-point road underdog, 38-20. The combined 58 points eclipsed the 46-point closing total, helping the ‘over’ cash the third game in a row.
-The Broncos jumped out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead, but finished the game trailing the Colts in every meaningful category. Quarterback Jay Cutler was 13-of-21 passing for 131 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while Travis Henry had 26 rushes for 131 yards.
-The Chargers swept the Broncos last season SU and ATS, prevailing as a three-point road underdog, 35-27, and as a 7 ½-point home ‘chalk,’ 48-20. The ‘over’ cashed both times.
-San Diego offensive tackle Marcus McNeill (knee), linebacker Matt Wilhelm (calf) and free safety Marlon McCree (hand) are ‘probable’ against the Broncos. Linebacker Carlos Polk (knee), linebacker Marques Harris (concussion), defensive tackle Jamal Williams (knee), cornerback Antonio Cromartie (ribs) and wide receiver Craig Davis (ankle) are ‘questionable.’ Wide receiver Eric Parker (toe) is ‘out’ indefinitely.
-Denver free safety John Lynch (groin) and place kicker Jason Elam (leg) are ‘probable’ against the Chargers, while tight end Stephen Alexander (calf), wide receiver Javon Walker (knee), running back Travis Henry (ankle), offensive tackle Ryan Harris (back) and fullback Mike Bell (concussion) are ‘questionable.’
**Buccaneers at Colts**
-Caesars Palace installed Indianapolis as a 10-point home favorite over Tampa Bay, with the total listed at 45 ½. FOX Sports will start its coverage of this game at 4:05 p.m. ET from RCA Dome.
-Tampa Bay (3-1 SU and ATS) enters this game riding a three-game SU and ATS winning streak after dumping Carolina last weekend as a three-point road underdog, 20-7. The combined 27 points never seriously threatened the 39-point closing total, helping the ‘under’ improve to 3-1.
-The Buccaneers jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead, and held the Panthers scoreless until the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jeff Garcia was 15-of-25 passing for 176 yards, while his favorite target Ike Hilliard caught seven passes for 114 yards.
-Indianapolis (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS) continued its winning ways by beating Denver last weekend as a 10-point home favorite, 38-20. The combined 58 points eclipsed the 46-point closing total, helping the ‘over’ cash the second straight week.
-Quarterback Peyton Manning was 20-of-27 passing for 193 yards with three touchdowns, while running back Joseph Addai had 19 carries for 136 yards and a score. Tight end Dallas Clark contributed with six receptions for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
-The Colts slipped past the Bucs during overtime in a memorable Monday Night Football contest back in 2003 as a 4 ½-point road underdog, 38-35. The combined 73 points soared ‘over’ the 37-point closing total.
-Tampa Bay wide receiver Ike Hilliard (ankle) and cornerback Brian Kelly (groin) are ‘probable’ versus the Colts, while cornerback Phillip Buchanon (foot) is ‘questionable.’
-Indianapolis wide receiver Marvin Harrison (knee), strong safety Bob Sanders (ribs), tight end Ben Utecht (head) and running back Joseph Addai (shoulder) are ‘doubtful’ against the Bucs. Defensive end Jeff Charleston (knee), offensive tackle Tony Ugoh (ankle), cornerback T.J. Rushing (hamstring) and linebacker Freddie Keiaho (concussion) are ‘questionable.’
