"1 UNIT" BASEBALL UPSET SHOCKER

Yankees +155

It is not often that you see a team with baseball's highest payroll come in as a prohibitive underdog, so this is a very unique spot for a Yankees team that has WON SIX IN A ROW ON THE ROAD, including last night's 8-4 nationally televised verdict. The Yankees come into tonight's contest still trailing by a full 7 games in the American League Wild Card chase which means they need to win just about ever time on the field in this the closing month of the regular season. Superstar Alex Rodriguez has struggled all season long (.246 batting average) with runners in scoring position, but he has the ability to carry a team on his back. Not only has A-Rod homered each of the past two nights, he is riding a SIX game hitting streak where his batting average (.458) has been out of sight. During that six-game onslaught, A-Rod has driven in ELEVEN runs, so he is upping his RBI count at just the right time. The Yankees are also getting a bit healthier pitching wise as Joba Chamberlain (shoulder) has come off the disabled list and will return to his set-up role in the bullpen behind star closer Mariano Rivera. I am aware that tonight's starter Darrell Rasner has struggled (5.52 ERA) in the month of August, but he is facing an opponent this evening that is in a very unusual spot. Tampa has been baseball's biggest surprise this season and has the best overall home record (52-21), but they were SWEPT at Tropicana Field once this season by none other than the YANKEES. New York is 9-5 in this series in 2008 and is one of only 2 teams to have a winning record against the Rays. Of course Tampa comes in as an enormous favorite tonight since ace Scott Kazmir (6-1, 2.30 HOME ERA) is on the mound. The Rays have managed to win 7 of his past 8 starting assignments, but this franchise has never been in this lofty position at this late stage of the campaign. Last night's final was 8-4 which unleashes an interesting angle from my database research. For the entire season to date, the dissapointing Yankees are actually as positive "23-11" when off a margin victory of 4+ runs in length.
