Sports Memo

OHIO over *AKRON by 1
Ohio’s running game is relatively consistent. Akron’s is getting less than 3.0 per carry and the Zipperhead offense is under 300 yards per game, which is the kind of offense that Ohio’s shaky defense will enjoy lining up against. OHIO, 24-23.

THE SPORTS ADVISORS

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Ohio (5-5, 6-3 ATS) at Akron (3-6, 4-5 ATS)
The Mid-American Conference takes center stage for the second consecutive night, as Ohio visits Akron in a battle of tired teams playing their third game in the last 12 days.Ohio ended Temple?s three-game winning streak with a 23-7 victory as a nine-point home favorite Friday night. The Bobcats have followed up a four-game slid by going 3-1 SU and ATS in their last four.Akron suffered its third consecutive SU and ATS loss on Friday, falling 44-20 at Bowling Green as a seven-point road underdog. The Zips? defense surrendered 517 total yards, while the offense committed four turnovers, all but assuring that Akron will fail to qualify for a bowl game for the second straight year.Ohio beat Akron 17-7 as a five-point home favorite last year, ending a three-game losing streak to the Zips. The home team is 7-2 in the last nine meetings (6-3 ATS). In fact, the host has cashed in 10 of the last 14 series meetings.

In MAC play, Ohio is 3-3 SU and ATS and tied for fourth in the East Division, while Akron is 2-3 SU and ATS and in sixth place in the seven-team division. The straight-up winner has covered the spread in every conference game this year for both squads.Going back to last year, Akron is just 2-8 ATS against MAC foes. Meanwhile, despite getting the spread-cover against Temple, the Bobcats are still just 6-13 ATS in their last 19 November games. However, they are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 against teams with sub-.500 records. The last three series meetings have stayed under the total. However, the over is 5-2 in Ohio?s last seven overall and 5-2 in Akron?s last seven.
ATS ADVANTAGE: OHIO

5 Dime –

OHIO

Lay the points with Ohio tonight on the road over Akron.

Two teams that are heading in opposite directions clash tonight and I’ll side with the hotter team that has the better offense.

Ohio is 3-1 SUATS in its last four and is led by running back Kalvin McRae, who should be able to hammer away at a tired Akron defense.

The Zips are just 1-4 SUATS in their last five. They lost 24-20 against Temple in their last home game on October 13 as a -12 ½ point chalk.

Akron just doesn’t have a very efficient offense, averaging less than 300 yards per game and under 3.0 ypc rushing.

With both teams having a quick turnaround after playing on Friday, I’ll side with the better offense in Ohio.

Lay the points as Ohio grabs the home win and cover.

NCAA Football Game Picks
Ohio at Akron

The Zips have shown just that lately as they've lost three straight to Temple, Buffalo and Bowling Green to drop out of the MAC title chase. Trouble at QB has been the main problem and Akron will likely split time tonight between Carlton Jackson and Chris Jacquemain, the latter of whom returns from a one-game suspension. Making matters more difficult is the fact that Ohio comes in one of the hotter MAC teams right now with two straight wins and a chance to clinch the division title. But this will be the Bobcats' third game in 12 days, the last two on the road. And Ohio has stumbled away from home, dropping earlier contests at Buffalo (31-10) and Toledo (43-40). The Zips look like a decent home underdog pick (+3) according to Dunkel, which has Akron favored straight up by 3. Dunkel Pick: Akron (+3).

LT Profits

Ohio @ Akron u49.0 (-110)
Wed Nov 7 '07 7:30p
The Ohio Bobcats and Akron Zips have a recent history of playing low-scoring games against each other, so we are looking for a safe Under tonight at this rather high posted total.

Ohio won this matchup 17-7 last year, making the Under 3-0 the last three seasons with an average combined total score in those contests of just 34.7 points per game. More importantly, Akron is struggling offensively this year, averaging 19.3 points per game on only 3.5 yards per rush and 6.0 yards per pass attempt.

Now granted, Ohio has been scoring points lately, but most of their success this season has come on the ground. The Bobcats are averaging a commendable 164.1 rushing yards per game on 4.7 yards per carry. However, they have gotten erratic quarterback play, as their two quarterbacks Brad Bower and Theo Scott have completed just a touch over 57 percent of their passes, with a combined 13 interceptions against only 11 touchdown passes.

Last week?s 23-7 Ohio victory over lowly Temple was a typical one, in that Scott and Bower passed for 94 and 91 yards respectively, but the ground game churned out 219 yards. Look for a similar approach tonight, which should mean time-consuming drives that are conducive to the Under at this big number.

MARC LAWRENCE PLAYBOOK

Ohio U over AKRON by 6
Yep. If it?s Wednesday in November? you know the deal. The OU Bobcats
will look to become bowl-eligible with a win in the Rubber City today.
The fact of the matter is they?ll likely need to win again 17 days from now
in their season fi nale in order to gain a bowl-bid for the second straight
season. But, fi rst things fi rst. Like last year the Bobbies are closing with a
fervor, whereas the Zips have that pin-in-the-balloon look, riding an 0-3
SUATS streak entering today?s contest. Our COLLEGE COACHES LEAGUE,
located inside the HANDICAPPERS LOUNGE at PLAYBOOK.COM, tells us
Ohio?s Frank Solich is 12-2 SU & 11-3 ATS in his head coaching career when
taking on conference foes off back-to-back losses. Momentum and history
can be a lethal combination.
