Today the National Sports Advisors look for the Seattle Mariners to defeat the Oakland Athletics tonight in the first encounter between the two AL West division powerhouses.
Seattle enters tonight's game with an overall record of 2-1, and riding a mini two-game winning streak after losing their season opener to the Chicago White Sox. The Mariners will look to take over first place in the AL West tonight, when they trot out righthander James Baldwin to the hill. Baldwin will be making his first career start with the Mariners tonight, after pitching with the Dodgers last season. Baldwin didn't finish the 2001 season very impressively, as he ended the campaign losing 8 of his last 10. However, those stats don't tell whole story, as Baldwin did not pitch that bad down the stretch. In his last four starts, Baldwin only allowed 8 earned runs in 28 innings of work, but still only went 1-3 as he was victimized by poor run support.
Oakland enters tonight's showdown with a 3-1 overall record, after taking three out of four in their opening series with Texas. The A's dropped a 7-5 decision yesterday afternoon to the Rangers, and they will send out righthander Erik Hiljus to try and get them back on track tonight. Hiljus pitched very well for the A's down the stretch last season, finishing the campaign with a four game winning streak and winning seven of his last nine. Although Hiljus had an impressive record down the stretch, he was rarely asked to work deep into ballgames. In his last ten starts, Hiljus only once pitched six complete innings. He did go 2-0 against the Mariners last season, giving up four earned runs in 10.2 innings of work.
So why the MARINERS? Well, we just think the Mariners have the better pitcher going tonight, and they are very tough to beat at home. The A's have a great team, but they are not as explosive offensively without Jason Giambi in the middle of their lineup. Seattle boasts(for our money) the best bullpen in the bigs, and that should be huge if Seattle can get a lead into the late innings. Hiljus was 2-0 versus Seattle last season, but he was not asked to go deep into ballgames. Oakland skipper Art Howe did not want Seattle's big bats getting four looks at Hiljus in a game, because they would have figured him out. Hiljus does not possess dominating stuff, and Seattle's hitters should be able to have a better approach versus him this season. Baldwin returns to the American League tonight, and he's pitched well in his career versus Oakland, owning a 6-3 record in his last nine starts versus the A's. Look for Seattle to take the first game between these two AL West powerhouses tonight, and take over first place in the AL West.
