INDIANAPOLIS -- Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. was arrested early Tuesday on a domestic battery charge after a woman told police officers he hit her and left her along an interstate highway.
Unser, 40, was arrested without incident at his motor home parked in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway infield, a Marion County sheriff's department report said.
He posted a $30,000 bond and was expected to be released Tuesday morning from the Marion County jail, sheriff's Maj. Vincent Cascella said.
A message seeking comment was left at the offices of his Indy Racing League team, Kelley Racing.
An initial court hearing was scheduled Wednesday, Cascella said.
Officers reported finding the woman about 3:30 a.m. standing next to a guardrail along Interstate 465, about a mile south of I-70 on the city's southwest side.
The 38-year-old woman, who said she was Unser's girlfriend of four years, told officers she and Unser had been at a south side strip club and that she was driving home because Unser was intoxicated.
During the drive, she and Unser began arguing and he repeatedly grabbed the gear shift of the sport-utility vehicle, shifting it into neutral and reverse while on the highway, she told police. She then hit Unser in an attempt to make him stop and he responded by hitting her in the face.
She told officers she pulled to the side of the highway, got out of the vehicle and that Unser then moved to the driver's seat and drove away.
When officers arrived at Unser's motor home, he at first denied knowing the woman, according to the police report. After being told what she had reported, officers reported that Unser said she had hit him first.
Unser, who won the Indy 500 in 1992 and 1994, is divorced.
