Arizona may win this game, but the worst thing you can do as a bettor is automatically assume that because Schilling lost there is NO way that Johnson will lose too. this is one of the many differences between betting and investing in unknown outcomes. despite their record Detroit has a nice team and their confidence is riding very high. Benero has control problems that will take time to solve, but Arizona is hardly hitting the cover off of the ball either. The temperature will be HOT with expected highs approaching 100 degrees making for a night where the ball can carry well. Benero is a pitcher who has success down in the zone and thus does not yield many line drive gap hits or HR. Randy Johnson, however is not himself and we wonder whether he has a slight injury to his lower back. His pitches are getting up in the zone in the 3rd inning and that is why he has been hit hard and has yielded runs. The heat is not going to help him either. Detroit's bullpen is fresh and they will be utilized in tonight's game to say the least. We are not suggesting that this will be a high scoring affair either, but given the control issues the pitch count will be high enough by the 5th inning that Benero will be relieved. Johnson is the horse starter of all-time, but he has thrown 378 pitches over his last 3 starts and given the extreme heat fatigue must be a consideration. The other major item to note is the fact that hitters are batting 375 on the first pitch. This implies that Johnson is grooving the first pitch strike far too much and hitters know what is coming and sit on it. Detroit is an excellent FB hitting club. Arizona may win this game, but remember this is NOT a lock and if it was the line would be Arizona minus 1000 and not -330.....
