Play AGAINST an undefeated road team (not an underdog of 3+ points) with a TOTAL of 46 points or less off an ATS loss in its last game and not before a non-conference road game or bye next week. (16-0-1 ATS, +12.8 ppg)
In Section 5 of the NFL e-CYCLOPEDIA, we investigate situations in which undefeated and winless teams excel and struggle. We reveal a scenario here in which it’s time to fade an unbeaten squad.
The public loves to back a favorite, and an undefeated one makes it all the more a “sure bet†in their minds. Even after a spread loss, the wagering masses may think “well, they won’t have 2 sub-par games in a rowâ€, when actually that’s exactly what is more probable. A team that wins despite not playing their best, is much less likely to learn from their mistakes and improve then a team that lost outright. If a team sub-consciously thinks “hey, we can win even when we don’t play our hardest or bestâ€, there is often little motivation for them to play their hardest or best.
Such squads are ripe for the picking as unbeaten road teams. Home underdogs and very small favorites will have little trouble finding the determination to spoil an opponent’s perfect record. As long as the visitor does not have a bye or another road game coming up next against a non-conference foe, their focus will be lacking and will have a very difficult time even winning the game, much less covering the spread.
