Golden State Warriors at Portland Trailblazers
Friday, November 18, 2005 10:05 P.M. EST

The Warriors are 26-14 ATS after a game where they made 12 or more three point shots over the last two seasons. The Trail Blazers are 5-15 ATS in home games versus poor passing teams averaging less than 20 assist per game over the last three seasons. Look for a top caliber performance on offense from the Warriors and a sub-par performance on offense from the Trail Blazers.
Good luck--Ken A.

Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat, Friday, November 18th, 7:35 P.M. EST EST

Miami is winning but not covering, failing to cover the spread in any of its last three wins and in six of its last seven games overall. Philadelphia is winning and covering, winning six straight both S/U and ATS. It is 24-11 ATS its last 35 against the Heat and 14-4 ATS its last 18 in Miami. MIAMI is 69-103 ATS after failing to cover 3 of their last 4 against the spread since 1996 and 6-17 ATS in November games over the last 2 seasons.

Basketball Best Bets

NBA
2 Star Selection
Orlando (+11 points or more) 88 CLEVELAND 92
18-Nov-05 04:05 PM Pacific Time
The Cavaliers have won and covered in 5 straight games and are coming off an impressive 15 point win over a good Wizards team on Tuesday night. Teams that have been playing that well tend to letdown as a big home favorite against losing teams and the Cavaliers qualify in a negative 17-54-1 ATS situation that is based on that premise. My ratings favor Cleveland by 11 ½ points and I’ll take Orlando in a 2-Star Best Bet at +11 points or more.

Opinion
VANDERBILT (-24 ½) 84 Jacksonville State 54
18-Nov-05 05:00 PM Pacific Time
Visiting teams that are unfamiliar with Vanderbilt’s odd configuration (the benches are on opposite ends behind the baskets rather than on the sidelines) seem to have a particularly tough time playing here. In fact, Vanderbilt is 39-17-2 ATS in regular season non-conference home games going all the way back to 1990, including 8- 0-1 ATS last season. Jacksonville State, meanwhile, is part of the Ohio Valley Conference, which has regularly been spanked when stepping up in class outside of conference play. OVC teams are only 32-50-4 ATS as non-conference dogs of 8 points or more the last few years (since they’ve come on line) and the line in this game should be about 27 points using a normal home court edge for Vandy. I’ll look for a 30 point win and consider the Commodores a pretty solid opinion and I would Upgrade Vanderbilt to a 2-Star Best Bet at -23 points or less.

2 Star Selection
COLORADO (-8 or less) 73 NC Wilmington 58
18-Nov-05 07:30 PM Pacific Time
NC Wilmington has won their first 3 games of the season, all as small underdogs, but teams that win 3 straight games as underdogs are just 39% ATS away from home in their next game and just 22-56-1 ATS in those games if not an underdog of 15 points or more. So, the Seahawks are due for a letdown after winning the BCA Invitational and Colorado will certainly not take them lightly because of their 3-0 record and because Colorado can’t afford to take any team lightly after last season’s 14-16 campaign. That season ended with an upset win over Texas and a near upset of 8th ranked Oklahoma State in the Big 12 tournament and the Buffaloes are excited about their prospects this season with everyone (and I mean everyone) back from last year’s team that includes 10 seniors. The Buffaloes will be playing with confidence after last season’s strong finish and they’ve always played better as a favorite under coach Ricardo Patten (60-48-1 ATS; 60-42-1 ATS as a favorite of less than 18 points) than they have an underdog or pick (50-72-3 ATS). The Buffs would have been favored by 9 or 10 points in this game prior to the start of the year, so Wilmington’s early success has supplied some line value and the situation suggests a letdown from the Seahawks. I’ll calculate that Colorado has a profitable 58% chance of covering at -8 points and that is the number at which I’ll make them a Best Bet.
Pass if Colorado becomes a favorite of more than 8 points.
