Game of the day

Notable quotable

"Self-sacrifice – it's our main characteristic. We will give it all on the field. It will take a minor miracle on Friday. Germany are the favourites, we are the underdogs, but think about it: we will not play against the Germans ten times to see who wins the most. It's one match and we will fight to the end." – Greece midfielder Kostas Katsouranis ahead of Friday’s match with Germany. Katsouranis will wear the captain’s arm band with Giorgos Karagounis suspended.

Notes and tips

Roy Oswalt makes his Texas Rangers debut Friday against the Colorado Rockies as a big -200 favorite. Oswalt, who signed with Texas on May 29, will replace Scott Feldman in the rotation. The decision gets Oswalt to the majors immediately, allows the club to move Feldman back to the bullpen, and also allows the team to give every other member of the rotation at least one extra day of rest due to Thursday's off day. Oswalt allowed two runs in six innings for Class AAA Round Rock on Sunday in a win over Oklahoma City. He also pushed his pitch count to 100 pitches.

Webb Simpson is trading his shot at becoming the seventh man to win the U.S. Open and British Open in the same year to witness the birth of his second child, according to an Orlando Sentinel report. "After winning, it's certainly a little bit harder to not go," Simpson told reporters at the Travelers Championship, according to the paper. "But in the grand scheme of life, it's a decision I know I'll always be happy I made." He opened at +4000 in British Open odds before pulling out.

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to search for a bat to protect Andre Either in the lineup as Matt Kemp is expected to be out of action for another three weeks. The latest rumor has the Dodgers targeting Houston’s Carlos Lee. "He's really the only true, true threat," manager Don Mattingly told reporters. "They're going to stay away from him. All there is to it. As long as he's battling, I have no issues with him.” Either leads the league in RBI, but has just one homer in the last month.
