Notable quotable

"We have the chance to be the best Lions team I've ever been a part of. The talent level is fine, the continuity is great, the characters on this team are good, the personalities are good, the blending is good, we don't have cancers. ... Everybody's here with the right purpose and intention, and that's very rare to find in professional sports." – British Columbia Lions veteran center Angus Reid ahead of Friday’s matchup with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, a rematch of last season’s Grey Cup which B.C. won. The Lions will have new head coach Mike Benevides on the sidelines for his debut.

Notes and tips

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier was to undergo an MRI on a left oblique injury he picked up Wednesday. The Dodgers are bracing themselves to be without the slugger for at least a couple of weeks. He’s hitting .291 with 10 homers and 55 RBI.

An ESPN report states that Tim Hightower will be the Washington Redskins’ starting running back if he’s healthy to begin the season. He owned the starting role early last season but was losing carries to Roy Helu before he tore his ACL in Week 7.

The Tampa Rays activated designated hitter Luke Scott from the disabled list and inserted him into the lineup as their cleanup hitter Thursday. Scott has been out since June 14 with a back injury that bothered the 34-year-old during parts of the past three seasons, including the two previous years in Baltimore. Scott is batting .220 this season but provides a home-run threat in the middle of the order.

The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to send Lamar Odom to the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team transaction that would send guard Mo Williams from the Clippers to the Utah Jazz and leave the Mavericks receiving a trade exception, the Dallas Morning News reported Thursday. By trading Odom, the Mavs do not have to buy out the final year of his contract, saving the team $2.4 million against the salary cap.
