Five Things You Need to Know in Sports

Want to start your sports day off right? Looking for some action and the most exciting matchups of the day? There is a college football game tonight and three key baseball games with playoff implications on tap. Here is a brief look at the top four important matchups of the day along with future odds.

1)Baylor at UL Monroe, 8pmET from Malone Stadium

Baylor takes on UL Monroe on Fridayfrom Malone Stadium at 8pmET in a non-conference matchup. Baylor opened with wins over SMU and Sam Houston State, while UL Monroe beat Arkansas in overtime and last week fell at Auburn in overtime.. Baylor is led by QB Nick Florence, who has done a nice job taking over for RGIII. Baylor is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. Baylor is a 6.5-point favorite with a total of 50.5.

2)Atlanta at Philadelphia, Tommy Hanson (12-8, 4.33 ERA) vs. Kyle Kendrick (9-11, 3.95 ERA)

The Braves keep inching closer to the Nats in the NL East. They send Hanson to the mound who has a 3.31 ERA in his last three starters. On August 8, the Braves crushed Kendrick, winning 12-6 as he allowed 6 runs in 3 1/3 innings. The Phils still are a long shot for the playoffs, but time is running out. They need to put together a winning streak. Braves are 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in Philadelphia. The Phillies opened as a -115 favorite with a total of 8.

3)Oakland at NY Yankees, Jarrod Parker (11-8, 3.51 ERA) vs. C.C. Sabathia (13-6, 3.63ERA)

If the Yankees end up in the wild card round, they have a 1/2 game edge over Oakland, who struggled in their last series against the Tigers. But the last time these teams faced each other in July, the A's swept the Yankees, 4-0. This should be a great series. Yankees are 15-4 L19 at home in series. The Yankees opened as a -165 favorite with a total of 8.5.

4)Chicago White Sox at LA Angels, Jake Peavy (11-11, 3.26 ERA) vs. Ervin Santana (8-12, 5.08 ERA)

This should be another great series, with the White Sox trying to hold on to the AL Central, while the Angels are hoping to string together a bunch of wins to get the wild card. Ervin Santana is not the most consistent pitcher, while Jake Peavy has been for the ChiSox, but hasn't always gotten the run support., Milwaukee is 8-1 OVER last 9 road games. The Over is 8-2 last 10 in this series. The LA Angles opened as a -145 favorite with a total of 8. .

5)Odds to win the 2012 Heisman Trophy

Here are the latest odds to win the Heisman Trophy from Bovada. Matt Barkley has slipped to second favorite after a poor performance against Stanford in a loss last week. Right now, the race appears to be wide open with West Virginia QB Geno Smith taking over as the favorite.
