Inside The Boxscores – Week 7

Florida St. 48 – Clemson 31

The Tigers out yarded the Seminoles but 4 turnovers leading to 24 Florida St. points did them in. They also botched a punt snap, leading to a TD, and let the Seminoles return a 97-yard kickoff for a touchdown.

Minnesota 31 – Illinois 10

The Gophers only out gained Illinois by 15 yards and had only 4 more first downs. The Illini fumbled the ball twice inside the Minnesota 15 yard line; killing two long drives and also turned the ball over on downs in the fourth quarter after a 90-yard drive.

Fresno St. 32 – Colorado St. 30

The Rams gained 125 more total yards than Fresno St. as Colorado St. had three touchdown drives of 79, 86 and 87 yards. Fresno got a touchdown off of a punt return and only had one drive that was longer than 47 yards.

BYU 35 – Utah St. 34

The Aggies were shutout in the second half after leading 34-7 at halftime. Utah St. gained only 82 of their 466 total yards in the second half while BYU put up 306 yards. The Aggies missed a field goal in the third quarter in their only real scoring threat in the half.

Tennessee 41 – Arkansas 38

It took six overtimes to decide this one after Arkansas scored on a 92-yard TD pass with 3:30 left in regulation. The teams exchanged field goals and missed two-point conversions throughout the overtime periods and Tennessee was able to score a TD in the sixth overtime after Arkansas was able to put up only a field goal.

Wake Forest 24 – Georgia Tech 21

The Deacons out gained Georgia Tech 447-332, had 13 more first downs and held the ball for nearly 16 minutes longer. Georgia Tech committed a costly fumble at the Wake Forest 29 yard line late in the fourth quarter that could have set up a game-tying field goal or a game-winning touchdown.

Maryland 48 – West Virginia17

Maryland had four less first downs and only had 53 more total yards than West Virginia. 28 1st quarter points for the Terps put them up to stay as the Mountaineers had seven possessions in the first quarter resulting in five punts, an interception and a loss on downs. Maryland held West Virginia to 186 yards on 57 carries.

Pittsburgh 48 – Syracuse 24

Pitt out yarded the Orangemen 455-276 and benefited from four Syracuse turnovers. The turnovers led to 17 points. Syracuse scored the last 21 points, which were meaningless after they were down by 45.

Virginia 27 – Duke 22

Duke had 7 more first downs, 97 more yards and held the ball almost 12 minutes longer. Virginia got a good chunk of their yardage in the fourth quarter as their two touchdowns came on drives of 90 and 86 yards.

Mississippi 17 – Florida 14

The Rebels were out yarded 300-191, but four Rex Grossman interceptions hurt the Gators. One of the INT’s was returned for a touchdown and the other three were all intercepted in their own territory, setting up one other TD. An intentional grounding call in the endzone by Grossman gave Mississippi their first two points of the game.

Iowa 31 – Purdue 28

Purdue ran up 501 yards of offense and 30 first downs while holding Iowa to 375 and only 14 first downs. Iowa scored on a blocked field goal return and on a 96-yard touchdown pass and scored the game winner with 1:07 left. Purdue had one last shot but was intercepted at the Iowa 25 yard line with 14 seconds left.

Texas Tech 48 – Texas A&M 47

The Raiders scored 24 4th quarter points to tie the game, including a 42-yard field goal with no time left to send it into overtime. Texas A&M missed their extra point after their TD in overtime and Tech responded with 7 to win the game. Dustin Long threw for 7 touchdowns and 366 yards.

East Carolina 59 – Army 24

The dreaded turnovers do in Army one more time. The four turnovers led to 21 East Carolina points including the first drive of the game for Army, in which they fumbled on their second play from scrimmage. They were able to out yard the Pirates 377-321 and held the ball for over 9 minutes longer.

Baylor 35 – Kansas 32

The Bears overcame three turnovers and kicked the winning field goal with no time left. The Jayhawks scored 14 points off of the turnovers but weren’t able to move the ball on their last possession setting up Baylor with good field position. Baylor was down 8 with 1:18 to go but scored and got the two-point conversion and then forced a Kansas punt and drove 49 yards in 34 seconds to set up the winning kick.

Notre Dame 31 – Stanford 7

The Irish scored 28 unanswered second half points, including two interception returns for touchdowns. Notre Dame held Stanford to 61 yards rushing on 30 carries (2 ypc) while they gained 249 yards on 43 carries (5.8 ypc). Stanford’s second half consisted of three punts, three interceptions and a turnover on downs. In all, they gained 31 yards in the half.

Air Force 48 – Navy 7

The Flyboys dominated with 536 yards of offense and forced three Navy turnovers, leading to 17 points. Navy was down 10-7 in the second quarter and driving but they were stopped at the 8-yard line and Air Force then drove 92 yards to take a 10-point lead and the air out of Navy.

TCU 34 – Houston 17

Houston committed five turnovers, all in their own territory, which led to 17 TCU points. The score was 10-10 at halftime but the Horned Frogs ran the second half kickoff back for a touchdown and then three plays later, ran an interception back 43 yards for a touchdown and a 14 point lead in a matter of two minutes.

San Jose St. 34 – SMU 23

SMU held a 20-7 halftime lead but let the Spartans make a big second half comeback. The Mustangs had more total yards, 337-334, five more first downs and held the ball for 19 more minutes. The game was decided on a Spartan 33-yard interception return for a TD.

Colorado 35 – Kansas St. 31

Kansas St. rushed for 320 yards on only 44 carries (7.3 ypc) but were only 5-14 passing for 83 yards. Down seven, the Wildcats got the ball at the Colorado 37 yard line with over 6 minutes left but could only move the ball 19 yards in 4 minutes and had to settle for a field goal. The Buffaloes were able to run out the last 2:10 and hold on.

California 34 – Washington 27

Washington out gained Cal 441-391 and had 9 more first downs, but committed three costly turnovers that led to 14 points. Both turnovers that led to the two Cal touchdowns were committed inside their own 10-yard line.

Penn St. 34 – Wisconsin 31

The Nittany Lions had 125 more yards than Wisconsin but were forced to four field goals by the Badgers. Wisconsin scored on a 65-yard interception return to get their only lead in the game.

Oregon 31 – Arizona 14

Oregon had 100 more yards of offense and their four touchdown drives were from 80, 61, 78 and 62 yards. After two touchdowns in their first three possessions, the Wildcats were forced to seven punts, an interception and a turnover on downs. Arizona was held to 30 yards on 27 carries (1.1 ypc).

Georgia 27 – Alabama 25

Alabama took their first lead of the game on a 35-yard interception return for a TD, but missed the two point conversion, which came back to haunt them. Georgia kicked a 32-yard field goal with 38 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs the win.

South Carolina 34 Mississippi St. 10

The Bulldogs committed five turnovers, which led to 14 points. Trailing 27-10 with 10 minutes remaining, Mississippi St. turned the ball over on their next four possessions, relinquishing any chance of a comeback. The Gamecocks out rushed the Bulldogs 230-69.

UCLA 43 – Oregon St. 35

UCLA out gained the Beavers 625-353, had 12 more first downs and held the ball for over 21 minutes longer. Oregon St. started out scoring on an 80-yard TD run and on an 83-yard blocked field goal return for a TD. UCLA then ripped off the next 29 points. The Beavers finished the scoring with a 19-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Washington St. 30 – USC 27

USC gave up 515 yards of offense, their highest output this season. The Trojans missed a 51-yard field goal in overtime, while the cougars were able to hit a 36-yard field goal to tie the game and then a 35-yarder to win it in overtime. USC was held to only 70 yards on 32 carries (2.2 ypc)

Oklahoma 31 – Missouri 24

Missouri had 8 more first downs and six more yards of offense but they gave up two big plays to start the second half that put them down by 16. They fought back to take the lead 24-23, but the Sooners used a fake field goal touchdown pass to give them the win. QB Brad Smith had 391 of the 449 total yards that Missouri accumulated.

Texas 17 – Oklahoma St. 15

Texas dominated statistically but Oklahoma St. had a chance near the end to get into field goal range but threw an interception and Texas ran the clock out. The cowboys also missed an opportunity in the 3rd quarter when they picked off a pass at the Texas 22 yard line only to turn it back over two plays later.

Ohio St. 27 – Northwestern 16

The Wildcats wasted opportunities on their last two drives of the 1st quarter. They recovered a fumble at the Buckeye 9-yard line but settled for a field goal and then settled for another field goal after a solid 64-yard drive. Ohio St. rushed for 285 yards on 56 carries (5.1 ypg).

Rice 37 – Louisiana Tech 20

Rice scored 23 points in the second half while shutting out Louisiana Tech. The Owls out rushed the Bulldogs 249-95 and picked off Luke McCown three times, returning one for a touchdown.

Boise St. 58 – Hawaii 31

Hawaii out yarded Boise St. 429-401 and had more first downs 27-23 but committed three turnovers to the Broncos one. Boise St. blocked a punt in for a TD and then recovered a fumble two plays later, setting up another TD.

UNLV 21 – Nevada 17

The Rebels had 466 yards of offense and 28 first downs but were forced to punt 10 times, mostly due to 14 penalties for 116 yards. The Wolfpack was down most of the game but took the lead midway through the 4th quarter but UNLV responded with a touchdown only 1:09 later to secure the win.

North Carolina 38 – Arizona St. 35

The Sun Devils out yarded the Tar Heels 657-478, but committed five turnovers and missed four field goals. The turnovers led to 17 North Carolina points and the Arizona St. secondary broke down late as the Tar Heels’ last two touchdowns were passes of 65 and 74 yards.

Western Michigan 31 – Buffalo 17

Luckily for the Broncos, their defense held Buffalo to 211 yards total offense and 11 first downs, because their offense committed five turnovers. Western Michigan broke it open in the 3rd quarter with a punt return for a touchdown and a two-play, 14-yard drive for a TD off a Bull turnover.

Miami Ohio 31 – Cincinnati 26

A very even game statistically but Cincinnati had chances in the 4th quarter and couldn’t produce. The Bearcats held Miami to 3 total yards in the quarter but after scoring 5 points to start the 4th, they missed a field goal, threw two interceptions and turned the ball over on downs.

Marshall 42 – Kent 21

Marshall actually out rushed Kent 268-262 and they gained 645 yards of total offense. Kent tied the game, but Marshall finished the game with 21 unanswered points.

Northern Illinois 41 - Ball St. 29

Ball St. had a 417-315 total yard advantage and had 10 more first downs but four interceptions hurt the Cardinals. The Huskies returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown with 3:35 left in the 4th quarter to seal the game.

Bowling Green 72 – Ohio 21

The Falcons gained 687 yards of offense while holding the Bobcats to 200 yards and only 12 first downs. Bowling Green averaged 8.7 ypp and had a very balanced attack with 349 yards rushing and 338 yards passing.

Arkansas St. 13 – Middle Tennessee St. 7

The Blue Raiders had 7 more first downs and 42 more yards but committed four turnovers, one being returned for the go ahead touchdown for the Indians. Arkansas St. only threw the ball 13 times while rushing for 229 yards on 42 carries (5.5 ypc)

Eastern Michigan 42 – Akron 34

A very even game statistically in which Eastern Michigan jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never trailed. Eastern Michigan did hold the ball for over 12 more minutes and were 12-18 on third down.

Tulane 52 – La-Monroe 9

Tulane only out yarded the Indians 456-369 and only had 5 more first downs. But the Indians committed 7 turnovers, which led to 28 Green Wave points and two missed chip shot field goals.

Miami Fla 48 – Connecticut 14

Miami dominated with a 497-191 yard advantage and a 27-14 first down advantage. The Huskies, who were obviously the less talented team, showed more discipline than Miami. They only committed one turnover to Miami’s two and only had 3 penalties for 25 yards while Miami committed 11 penalties for 110 yards.

LSU 48 – La-Lafayette 0

The Tigers held the Cajuns to only 70 total yards and seven first downs. They only had one drive that lasted longer than five plays and that resulted in a turnover on downs. LSU out rushed the Cajuns 204-27.

New Mexico St. 49 – UTEP 14

New Mexico St. rushed for 275 yards on 52 carries (5.3 ypc) and scored 14 points off of three UTEP turnovers. The Aggies scored on their first three possessions and could have scored on their first eight possessions, but missed two short field goals within that stretch.

South Florida 24 - North Texas 17

South Florida never trailed and held the Mean Green to 198 yards and 12 first downs. North Texas also committed five turnovers. South Florida gained 432 yards of offense and the score could have been much worse if it wasn’t for their 17 penalties for 137 yards.
