Inside The Boxscores – Week 9
Maryland 34 - Georgia Tech 10
Georgia Tech finished with more total yards, 485-432, and more first downs, 26-21. Maryland scored on a fumble return and the Yellow Jackets turned the ball over on downs on drives of 78 and 96 yards. Maryland RB Chris downs rushed for 212 yards and three touchdowns.
Boise St 67 - Fresno St. 21
The Broncos piled up 688 yards of offense and held Fresno St. to 36 yards rushing on 17 carries (2.1 ypc). Ryan Dinwiddie came off the bench and went 19-22 with 406 yards and five touchdowns in his first game back in over a month.
Clemson 31 - Wake Forest 23
Wake Forest out gained Clemson 522-280 and had five more first downs but also had five more turnovers. The Deacons turned the ball over on five of their seven 2nd half possessions including a fumble with 1:15 remaining as they were going in for the possible tying touchdown. The ball rolled out of the endzone for a Clemson touchback.
West Virginia 34 – Syracuse 7
Syracuse committed four turnovers, all in the 1st half, that led to 13 West Virginia points. The Mountaineers rushed for 279 yards on 57 carries (4.9 ypc) while the Orangemen were held to 72 rushing yards on 38 carries (1.9 ypc).
Boston College 46 – Navy 21
First downs were even and Boston College only had 23 more total yards but benefited from six Navy turnovers. The Eagles scored 14 point off of those turnovers and also stopped Navy twice on fourth down in the 1st quarter near the red zone.
NC State 24 – Duke 22
Duke finished with three more first downs and 12 more total yards and missed a 65-yard field goal to end the game after recovering an onsides kick. NC State led 17-0 but Duke came back with 15 unanswered points and came up just short. After recovering the onsides kick, Duke was unable to gain any yards in 3 plays, resulting in the long FGA.
Minnesota 28 - Michigan St. 7
The Gophers out yarded the Spartans 537-280 and scored the final 28 points after spotting Michigan St. the first touchdown. Minnesota rushed for 390 yards on 60 carries (6.5 ypc), while holding the Spartans to 51 yards on 26 carries (2.0 ypc).
Penn St. 49 – Northwestern 0
Penn St. rushed for 419 yards on 59 carries (7.1 ypc) while holding Northwestern to 7 yards on 30 carries (0.2 ypc). The Nittany Lions punted their first possession and then scored a TD on their next 6 possessions.
Iowa 24 – Indiana 8
Indiana had seven more first downs and 124 more total yards. The Hoosiers had six drives of 50 yards or more but managed just two field goals. They were stopped in the red zone five times, with three turnovers and two losses on downs.
Ohio St. 19 – Wisconsin 14
Ohio St. scored the only touchdown of the 2nd half and made a key interception in the 4th quarter when Wisconsin was driving for the go ahead score. Field possession was big in this game as Ohio St. averaged 50 yards on their six punts while Wisconsin averaged only 30 yards on their six punts, including a block.
Georgia 48 – Vanderbilt 17
Georgia racked up 606 yards of offense, including 426 yards passing. Bulldog QB’s were 28-34 and threw three touchdowns. Vanderbilt got into Georgia territory six times but were only able to put up three scores.
Virginia Tech 35 – Rutgers 14
The Hokies held Rutgers to 215 yards and only 11 first downs. Virginia Tech committed three turnovers, which led to all 14 Scarlet Knights points. The Hokies rushed for 342 yards on 50 carries (6.8 ypc) while holding Rutgers to –7 yards on 25 carries (-0.3 ypc).
Oklahoma 49 – Iowa St. 3
Oklahoma held Iowa St. to an incredible 60 total yards and five first downs. Of the 15 Cyclone drives, only two consisted of more than 4 plays. Their longest drive was 37 yards, which gave them their only points of the game. Seneca Wallace was only 4-22 for 43 yards and three interceptions.
TCU 45 – Louisville 31
TCU had 14 more first downs and held the ball for nearly 21 minutes longer. Louisville had three turnovers, which led to 17 TCU points and didn’t get on the board until after TCU built a 31-0 lead.
Texas A&M 47 – Kansas 22
The Aggies racked up 566 yards of offense including 428 yards passing. They held Kansas to 86 yards rushing on 32 carries (2.7 ypc) and forced 10 punts. The Jayhawks longest drive in the first half was 16 yards.
SMU 37 – Louisiana Tech 34
SMU tallied 458 yards of offense and got their first win of the season. QB Richard Bartel got the start and cemented the starting job for a while. He was 21-30 for 296 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. The Mustangs had the ball for nearly 24 minutes longer.
UNLV 24 – BYU 3
BYU had five more first downs and had nearly 100 more total yards, but committed five turnovers, which led to 21 UNLV points. Along with the turnovers, the Cougars lost the ball on downs on four different occasions.
Southern Miss 23 – Cincinnati 14
Southern Miss was held to only 11 first downs and 209 total yards. They scored their go ahead touchdown on an interception return in the 4th quarter and scored another touchdown earlier when they returned a fumble 25 yards to the Bearcats 5 yard line.
Colorado St. 28- Utah 20
Utah out gained the Rams 481-252 and had 8 more first downs. The Utes had 6 dives of more than 50 yards and were stopped at the Colorado St. 5 yard line to end the game. The Rams scored their final TD off of an interception that was returned to the Utah 8 yard line.
San Diego St. 24 – Wyoming 20
A back and forth game most of the way, the Aztecs scored the game-winning touchdown on a 34-yard interception return. San Diego St. missed two field goals, turned the ball over twice, once after driving down to the Cowboys 31 yard line.
USC 41 – Washington 21
USC held the Huskies to –5 yards rushing on 19 carries (-0.3 ypc). Carson Palmer had a very efficient game going 21-34 for 348 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.
Stanford 16 – Arizona 6
Stanford had 10 more first downs and held the ball over 13 more minutes. The Cardinal had to settle for two short field goals from 27 and 21 yards in the second half. The Wildcats committed all three turnovers in Stanford territory after all were after drives longer than 40 yards.
Cal 17 – UCLA 12
Cal was held to only 173 yards of offense and 11 first downs but scored 14 points off of three Bruins turnovers. Besides their three scoring drives, in the Bears’ other 12 possessions, their longest drive was only 8 yards. The teams combined for just 69 yards rushing.
Tulane 35 – UAB 14
UAB had more first downs, 18-15 and had more total yards, 292-282. Tulane scored on a punt return and an interception return and held UAB to only 53 yards in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
Texas 17 – Kansas St. 14
The Longhorns only had 10 first downs, but were able to kick the game winning 27-yard field goal with 1:32 remaining. Kansas St. drove 45 yards to set up the game winning 35-yard field goal, but it was blocked. Texas was held to just 46 yards rushing on 32 carries (1.4 ypc).
Oklahoma St. 24 – Nebraska 21
The Cowboys held off a late Nebraska rally to pull off the upset. Nebraska scored 14 4th quarter points, 7 off of a Cowboys fumble, but was unable to recover the onsides kick and Oklahoma St. was able to run out the clock.
Arizona St. 45 – Oregon 42
The Sun Devils had 8 more first downs and 133 more total yards but needed a 29-yard field goal with 1:58 remaining to get the win. Arizona St. scored on eight consecutive 2nd half possessions after the Ducks built an 18-point lead.
Michigan 23 – Purdue 21
A very even game statistically, Purdue scored their last touchdown with eight seconds remaining to pull within two points. The Boilermakers threw two interceptions in Michigan territory in the 4th quarter.
Alabama 42 – Mississippi 7
Alabama doubles up Mississippi in total yards 454-220. Santonio Beard rushed for 137 yard and five touchdowns. The Crimson Tide held the Rebels to 4 yards rushing on 28 carries (0.1 ypc).
Virginia 37 – North Carolina 27
North Carolina out yarded Virginia 451-423 but committed two costly turnovers. One occurred at their own 18-yard line and the other one at the Virginia 1-yard line. North Carolina led 21-0 at halftime but Virginia was able to score on their first six 2nd half possessions.
Colorado 34 – Baylor 0
The Buffaloes rushed for 270 yards on 53 carries (5.1 ypc) and scored all of their points in the first half. They only gained 95 yards in the second half but didn’t need to make big plays with a 35-0 lead.
Nevada 52 – San Jose St. 24
Nevada racked up 571 yards of offense and scored 21 points off of three Spartan turnovers. The Wolfpack rushed for 308 yards on 36 carries (8.6 ypc).
Kentucky 29 – Arkansas 17
Arkansas out gained the Wildcats 515-332 and had 8 more first downs but Kentucky took their biggest lead of the game with an 86-yard punt returned for a touchdown. Prior to that, Kentucky intercepted a pass at the Razorback 20-yard line setting up another touchdown. Later in the 3rd quarter, Kentucky recovered a fumble and later scored their second touchdown off a turnover.
Texas Tech 52 – Missouri 38
Texas Tech gained 606 yards of offense and had 38 first downs. Kliff Kingsbury was 49-70 for 510 yards and five touchdowns and the Raiders were able to score on all but three of their possessions.
Florida 30 – Auburn 23
Florida held the ball nearly 18 minutes longer and had 9 more first downs. Auburn lost RB Carnell Williams for the season but Ronnie Brown did a good job in his absense, rushing for 162 yards on 22 carries (7.4 ypc). He also had a 54-yards touchdown reception.
LSU 38 – South Carolina 14
South Carolina had a 14-6 halftime lead but LSU scored the only 32 points in the 2nd half, including an interception return for a touchdown. The Gamecocks were held to 61 total yards in the 2nd half.
Houston 56 – Army 42
The game featured 1,005 yards of offense and Houston scored 14 points in each quarter. Army didn’t commit their only turnover until their final drive. QB Zac Dahman was 17-33 for 353 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.
Mississippi St. 29 – Memphis 17
Total yards were exactly even at 346 but Memphis committed five turnovers which the Rebels turned into 17 points. Mississippi St. trailed 17-10 but scored the last 19 points, including an interception returned for a touchdown with 1:42 left in the game to put it away.
Notre Dame 21 – Air Force 14
Notre Dame held Air Force to 161 total yards and 10 first downs. The Falcons rushing attack, that was averaging 339 ypg, ran for only 104 yards. Notre Dame had three turnovers that were costly. A fumble returned for a touchdown in the first quarter and a fumble on their first 2nd half play led to the other Air Force touchdown.
UTEP 38 – Rice 35
UTEP kicked a 59-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining to pull out the victory. Rice had a 14 point lead but the Miners came back to tie the game and then took the lead on a fumble returned for a touchdown. UTEP had a very balanced attack gaining 5.9 ypa and 5.4 ypc.
Hawaii 37 – Tulsa 14
Hawaii racked up 579 yards of offense to Tulsa’s 331. The Warriors jumped out to a 30-0 lead early in the third and coasted in the 2nd half. Hawaii threw the ball 63 times compared to only 11 rushes and every scoring drive was at least 56 yards.
Temple 38 – Connecticut 24
The Owls held the Huskies to 35 yards rushing on 33 carries (1.1 ypc). Temple took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and also scored on a fumble return for their first two touchdowns. Tanardo Sharps rushed for 229 yards on 36 carries (6.4 ypc).
Middle Tennessee St. 48 – La-Lafayette 35
The Blue Raiders finally got their offense going with 520 yards of offense. Andrico Hines was 17-24 for 347 yards and one touchdown and also rushed 75 yards and three touchdowns. Middle Tennessee St. held the Cajuns to 20 yards rushing on 32 carries (0.6 ypc).
Miami Ohio 49 – Buffalo 0
Miami held Buffalo to 175 total yards and 13 first downs. The Redhawks cruised while gaining 236 yards rushing and 251 yards passing. The Bulls were only 2-16 on third down and 1-5 on fourth down.
South Florida 46 – East Carolina 30
The Pirates had 16 more first downs and 510 yard of offense but committed four turnovers that led to 14 South Florida points. East Carolina was in Bulls territory on nine different possessions.
Ball St. 42 – Eastern Michigan 17
Eastern Michigan had an early 14-7 lead and then the Cardinals scored the next 35 points to pull away. Ball St. QB Andy Roesch was 14-27 for 270 yards and five touchdowns.
Ohio 50 – Kent 0
Ohio held Kent to 187 total yards and 10 first downs. The Bobcats finished with 351 yards of offense, all on the ground. They attempted only one pass, which fell incomplete. Kent committed five turnovers, including four interceptions, and was lucky enough to recover four of their five fumbles.
Northern Illinois 49 – Central Michigan 0
Central Michigan was held to 170 total yards and only 6 first downs and committed four turnovers. They were only 1-18 on third and fourth downs combined. All three 2nd half touchdown drives for the Huskies were less than 30 yards while the fourth touchdown came on a fumble return.
New Mexico St. 34 – La-Monroe 21
The Aggies had 526 yards of offense, including 342 yards rushing on 50 carries (6.8 ypc). La-Monroe only had three 2nd half possessions and eight in total and was in New Mexico St. territory in seven of those possessions but had to punt two of those times and missed two field goals.
Marshall 24 – Troy St. 7
Marshall held Troy St. to 164 yards total offense and only 63 yards rushing on 47 carries (1.3 ypc). The Thundering Herd committed 9 penalties for 137 yards.
Utah St. 45 - New Mexico 44
Probably the widest game of the day, where neither team had a lead of more than seven points. New Mexico tied the game at 31-31 with 1:18 remaining and then took the lead when they returned an interception for a touchdown on the next Aggie drive with just: 25 seconds left. Utah St. then drove the ball 60 yards in just three plays, capped off with a 32-yard touchdown pass that sent the game into OT. New Mexico then missed their point after in OT to lose by one. The teams combined for 23 penalties for 239 yards.
Bowling Green 48 – Western Michigan 45
Western Michigan had a 14-point lead on four different occasions but Bowling Green scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to take the lead. Western Michigan scored a touchdown with 2:29 left to tie the game but had a 39-yard field goal blocked as time expired to send the game into overtime.
Toledo 27 – Central Florida 24
Central Florida led for most of the game even though Toledo was able to move with ease. They had a 31-17 first down advantage and a 497-379 total yard advantage. The Rockets scored their go ahead touchdown in the 4th quarter on a 59-yard touchdown run.
North Texas 13 – Arkansas St. 10
The Indians only had 10 first downs and 223 total yards but held the lead late in the 4th quarter due to their defense. But North Texas scored the game-winning touchdown with just: 53 remaining on a 6-play 72-yard drive. North Texas QB Andrew Smith only threw seven passes, but completed six including the game-winning touchdown.
