Trends and Angles for the Labor Day weekend festivities
SYRACUSE at BYU (-2½): The Cougars have stumbled out of the gate, failing in 12 of their last 15 season openers and 34 of 52 in the first half of the campaign. Syracuse has been a failure as road dogs, however, coming up short in 13 of 16 in that role and seven straight when getting seven points or less. They have also dropped five of six on the road ATS in the first half of the season and 7 of 10 on grass. The Orangemen have cashed in 8 of their last 11 road openers, however.
SAN DIEGO ST at FRESNO ST (-16): Fresno State has 'covered' five of its last six the first month of the season the past three years. San Diego State is 1-8 ATS in road openers and 7-17 ATS in non-conference action on the highway.
WAKE FOREST (-2½) at NO. ILL: The Demon Deacons have come up short in eight of their last dozen road lidlifters while Northern Illinois has dropped 10 of their last 11 openers SU and failed to cash in 8 of 10.
OKLAHOMA (-38) at TULSA: The Sooners have stumbled in 37 of their last 57 on turf. Oklahoma has 'covered' 14 of its last 21 road openers. They have won eight of nine against WAC opponents SU but are only 4-5 ATS. Tulsa was 1-9 ATS last season, getting the money in its season finale and is 12-29-3 as underdogs since 1997. The Golden Hurricane is just 15-26-1 ATS at home since 1993.
WASHINGTON at MICHIGAN (-6½): The Wolverines will be looking for payback after bowing to the Huskies, 23-18, last season. Washington has 'covered' seven of its last eight non-conference tests. Michigan has cashed in 8 of its last 12 at home.
KANSAS at IOWA ST (-20½): Betting against Kansas on the road has been very profitable recently as it has come up short in 33 of 49 on the highway, overall, and 21 of 30 as underdogs. The Jayhawks have also faltered in 25 of 37 ATS in conference road tests and 6 of 19 on grass. Iowa State has thrived at home in Big-12 play, cashing in 25 of 37. The Cyclones have also come out on top in 9 of their last 11 as favorites and five of six as home chalk. They have 'covered' seven of nine against Kansas, including four in a row since 1992.
COLORADO (-8½) at COLORADO ST: The Rams had plenty of support in their season opener and they pulled one out against Virginia, 35-29. Colorado State has 'covered' 8 of 10 as underdogs the last three seasons. Colorado has won six of its last eight against the Rams SU but dropped four of six ATS. The last six series tussles have soared well 'over' the total with the teams combining to average 58.7 points per game.
NEVADA at WASHINGTON ST (-29): The Cougars, one of the pre-season favorites in the Pac-10, usually get out of the gate in a hurry, cashing 36 of 55 in the first half of the season. Washington State has cashed in 17 of its last 24 non-conference tests and three in a row as home favorites against the WAC. Nevada has lost seven in a row versus the Pac-10 and came up short ATS in four of five. Be aware that the Cougars struggled in Pullman the past two seasons, failing to cash in six of eight opportunities as favorites.
NORTHWESTERN (- 1½) at AIR FORCE: The Falcons moved to the role of favorite early in the week, even though they have come up short in five of six in that role. Air Force has won six of its last seven home openers SU, however. Northwestern is 5-1 ATS in its last six games the first month of the season.
ILLINOIS (-7½) versus MISSOURI at ST LOUIS: Illinois has failed to 'cover' five of its last six under domes and are just 26-49 ATS on turf. The Fighting Illini have cashed in seven of their last eight road debuts.
VIRGINIA at FLORIDA ST (-27½): The Seminoles look to once again rule the roost in the ACC after getting knocked off their perch by Maryland last season. Florida State has 'covered' six of its last seven against conference opposition and 38 of 57 as favorites. They have also cashed in 8 of 10 versus Virginia, including four of five in Tallahassee. The Seminoles are an imposing 26-12 as home chalk of 21½ or more and 30-12 ATS with six days rest or less. The Cavaliers are 12-4 ATS on the road the first month of the season.
BAYLOR at CALIFORNIA (-10): Something's gotta give when these two bottom feeders meet in Strawberry Canyon. Baylor is 6-21 ATS as road dogs the past three seasons while California is a dismal 4-21-1 as favorites over the past eight campaigns. The Golden Bears have cashed at a 9-2-2 clip versus Big-12 opposition.
WYOMING at TENNESSEE (-32½): The Cowboys have been a solid play as road dogs, getting the cash in 20 of their last 31 tries. Wyoming has struggled out of the gate, however, dropping seven of eight ATS in the first two weeks of the season. Tennessee has cashed in ten of its last dozen season openers.
VANDERBILT at GEORGIA TECH (-21½): The Yellow Jackets have been quick out of the starting blocks, getting the money in 35 of 51 the first half of the season and 9 of 11 the first two weeks. Georgia Tech has also 'covered' 10 of its last 15 non-conference battles. Vanderbilt has 'covered' 15 of its last 25 outside the SEC.
EAST CAROLINA (-14½) at DUKE: Duke has come up short in five of its last seven against Conference-USA teams and dripped eight of its last nine outside the ACC. East Carolina is 5-2-1 ATS in its last eight season openers.
UAB at FLORIDA (-33½): The John Zook era begins in Gainesville and this might not be the cakewalk everyone expects. UAB has 'covered' 13 of its last 17 as underdogs and six of seven on grass, as well as nine in a row the first month of the season. Florida is a tough customer at home, getting the money in 16 of its last 22 as favorites. The Gators have won 12 straight home openers by an average margin of 31.8 points, but are just 3-7 ATS.
MISSISSIPPI ST at OREGON (-10): Duck fans get their first look at Jason Fife, the successor to Joey Harrington at quarterback. Oregon hasn't fared well as home favorites of 7½ to 14 points, failing in five of its last six. Mississippi State is 31-15 as dogs since '92 and has cashed 11 of its last 14 road openers. The Bulldogs have captured eight straight season debuts by an average margin of 19 points per game, but six of those wins came against Memphis and the other two were versus Vandy and MTSU.
NAVY at SMU (-10): The Midshipmen have been one of the better road dogs on the board, cashing in 25 of 34. Navy has cashed in six straight as underdogs of 10½ to 14 and nine of eleven when getting 7½ to 14 points. They have also 'covered' 25 of their last 36 on grass. SMU has cashed two straight as double-digit favorites at home, but before that were 0-12-1 in this category.
CLEMSON at GEORGIA (-9½): The Bulldogs are 22-10 ATS in non-conference action, but just 12-19 ATS as home favorites.
OKLAHOMA ST (-1½) at LOUISIANA TECH: Louisiana Tech has 'covered' five of its last six at home and six of its last seven as underdogs in Ruston. The Bulldogs are also 10-2 ATS on grass. They have lost nine straight against Big-12 foes, however. Oklahoma State has failed in 7 of its last 10 non-conference tests and is just 3-8-1 ATS on grass. The Cowboys are slow starters, failing in 9 of 10 the first half of the season.
MARYLAND versus NOTRE DAME (-1½) at Meadowlands: Coach Tyler Willingham makes his debut as Notre Dame coach. The Fighting Irish love playing at Giants Stadium where they have won nine in a row SU. Notre Dame has stumbled from the gate recently, coming up short in 10 of 13 the first month of the season.
HOUSTON at RICE (-8½): The favorite has cashed in 7 of the last 10 series encounters. Houston is 6-16 ATS the past three campaigns and has come up short in 10 of 11 the first half of the season. The Owls have also failed in 26 of their last 42 on turf. The Cougars have won and 'covered' four of their last six against Rice.
WISCONSIN (-3½) at UNLV: The Badgers have disappointed as favorites in 14 of their last 18 and in eight of nine in non-conference play. UNLV has struggled at home, however, dropping 11 of 15 as underdogs.
CFU at PENN ST (-13): Central Florida is 5-1 ATS the first two weeks of the season while Penn State ahs come up short in five of its last six the first month of the campaign,
AKRON at IOWA (-19½): The Zips are 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS in their last four games against Big 10 opposition and have been outscored 169-59 since 1990.
MTSU at ALABAMA (-18½): Middle Tennessee State has lost six of its last seven versus the SEC but cashed on four occasions. The Blue Raiders have 'covered' seven of their last nine as dogs and 10 of 14 in non-conference play. Alabama has failed in 12 of its last 17 as favorites.
EMU at MICHIGAN STATE (-38): It's hard to recommend a 38-point favorite but the Spartans have 'covered' 10 of their last 14 as favorites in East Lansing. Michigan State has won seven straight against MAC foes and cashed six times. Eastern Michigan has failed in 9 of its last 10 non-conference outings. They have also lost nine straight against Big-10 opponents and failed to get the money at a 2-6-1 clip. During that span they were outscored 396-52.
CONNECTICUT at BC (-35): The Huskies were a great play as underdogs in 2001, getting the money in seven of nine. Connecticut has 'covered' five of six as road dogs of 21½ or more the past three seasons. Boston College 'covered' 10 of its last 13 as favorites and 8 of 10 as home chalk. They are only 5-12 ATS in season openers, however.
TROY ST at NEBRASKA (-38: The Cornhuskers at 39-21 ATS at home.
SAN JOSE ST at ARKANSAS ST: San Jose State has cashed in four of five as road favorites since '96.
UL LAFAYETTE at TEXAS A&M (-31): The Aggies have 'covered' 13 of their last six in College Station against non-conference foes and 11 of their last 14 in the first month of the season. Louisiana Tech has lost five in a row against Big-12 schools but cashed in all five contests.
UL MONROE at MISSISSIPPI (-35): Mississippi is a dismal 7-21-1 as double-digit favorites. The Indians have been scalped in seven of their last eight non-conference tests.
NMSU at SO CAR (-23): New Mexico State has lost six in a row SU and failed to cash in five of six against SEC opposition. The Gamecocks have 'covered' six of their last seven the first month of the season.
MIAMI (O) at NORTH CAROLINA (-10): The Tar Heels are 4-12 ATS against non-conference rivals at home. Miami (O) has cashed its last six season openers and six of its last seven road debuts. The Red Hawks are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 on road grass.
OHIO U at PITT (-19½): The Panthers are 3-7 ATS as home favorites of 14 or more. Ohio U. has cashed at a 25-16-1 clip as road dogs.
NORTH TEXAS at TEXAS (-40): The Longhorns have been stymied in non-conference play, failing to cash in 14 of their last 19. Texas has also stumbled in 14 of its last 17 season openers ATS.
IDAHO at BOISE ST (-23½): The Broncos thrive at home, getting the money in eight of nine as favorites. Boise State has also 'covered' 16 of its last 22, overall. Idaho has come up short in its last five against Boise State SU and dropped four of five ATS. In the last three meetings the Broncos outscored the Vandals, 156-51.
UTAH (-10½) at UTAH ST: The Utes have cashed in 9 of their last 13 against Utah State, winning 8 of 10 SU and four of five in Logan.
LSU at VIRGINIA TECH (-7½): The Hokies are 19-9-1 in Blacksburg against non-conference foes. Virginia Tech has also cashed seven of eight as home favorites of 7½ to l4 points. The Bengals, defending SEC champs, have cashed five of six as road dogs of 7½ to 14 points since 1992. The Hokies are 16-9-1 ATS prior to a bye.
KENTUCKY at LOUISVILLE (-13½): A national cable audience will get a chance to take a look at Louisville gunslinger Dave Ragone, a quarterback that has pro scouts drooling. Louisville has captured the last three against the Wildcats by an average of 20 points per game. This has all the earmarks of a shootout with the two teams combining to average 70 points per game the last six seasons.
TCU at CINCINNATI (-2½): TCU is 16-9 ATS on artificial turf and 7-2 ATS in its last nine road openers.
AUBURN at USC (-7): The Trojans have been one of the worst home favorites in the country the last three seasons. USC is 3-12 as the chalk since '99, failing in 15 of 19 at home and 9 of 10 as home favorites. They are also 1-7 ATS in non-conference play and 1-6 ATS in September. Auburn is only 8-16 ATS as underdogs but it has won eight of its last nine season openers SU, cashing in five of seven. The last three seasons, however, they picked on lightweights Appalachian State, Wyoming and Ball State.
