Philadelphia (Person) @ San Francisco (Schmidt)

Well I am going to be backing the home town Giants here I have said it over and over that I don't like Larry Bowa as a Manager and I will say it again he makes some of the stupidest calls I have ever seen. Here are a few more reasons I like the Giants.

San Francisco sends Jason Schmidt to the mound who had a few problems his first start of the year but I look for him to get on track here. He has pitched well against the Phillies while with the Pirates but never received any run support, he should have no trouble in that area here. In two outings at home against the Phils while with Pittsburgh he pitched 15 innings giving up only 1 earned run. And I really think he gets back on the winning side tonight against a Philadelphia team that is just not playing like a team.

Philadelphia counters with Robert Person who has been very shaky after a very good first game to start the year. He has started 5 games this year and carries an ERA of 5.23 and has just been thumped by the Giants in 3 starts against them the Phillies are 0-3 and he has an ERA of 9.48 and a WHIP of 1.864. In his last start in San Francisco last year he only lasted 3.2 innings giving up 6 earned runs. He is in a slump and I will bet against him as long as he is.

Well let's talk bullpens, there is no comparison in my opinion Philadelphia's has just been horrible they have blown so many games this year they should all wear bags over their heads, with an ERA of 6.55 on the road and a WHIP of 1.758. While the Giants pen has been rock solid at home with an ERA of 2.14 and WHIP of 1.048.

Bottom line to this game is the Giants are the better hitting team and would you want your money riding on the Philadelphia bullpen even if Person pitches well (which I just can't see) he has to turn it over to that bullpen that was worked pretty hard in Colorado. The Giants are 8-1 at home against the Phillies over the last 3 seasons and don't see that record doing anything but getting better here!

Gotta disagree with one thing here...I LOVE Bowa as Manager. He tells it like it is and doesn't put up with the spoiled brat attitude that so many baseball players have today. By reading your posts before, I know you understand what I am talking about.

As far as decisions he makes, they are far better than many of the recent Phillies managers. This guy is passionate about Phillies baseball and wants his players to have that same passion. This is what the fans want too. That's why the 1993 team was so much fun to watch. That's the type of team Bowa wants. Play baseball...don't cry. There is NO crying in baseball, right?

I watch most Phillies games and I love the fact that if a player stinks he won't be around long.

Just my thoughts.

If bad players aren't going to be around long then the whole bullpen should be put out to pasture! I appreciate the reply nice to have an intelligent reply instead of the bashing you get allot of times. This is just my opinion also and we just happen to disagree.

Bowa more or less said to Rheal Cormier that if you are going to continue to stink, then time for someone else to pitch in late inning situations that matter. So, David Coggin got a shot the other day and he too stunk up the joint.

Relief pitching throughout baseball is a problem. It doesn't seem like anyone can handle the job these days. I also think it's time to let the starters go deeper into the games. I can't stand when a pitcher throws 6 great innings and comes out because he reached his 100 pitch pitch count.

And yes, it is nice to talk nice even when having opposing views.

Thanks for the write-up. It's a lot easier throwing money down on a game when the handicapper lets you know why he's thinking a certain way. By the way, your analysis makes a lot of sense. [Smile]
