Monday's Betting Tips
By Covers.com

Weather to watch

Milwaukee Brewers at Colorado Rockies: A 30 percent chance of thunderstorms at Coors Field.

Who’s hot?

The Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays at home and then travelled to Minnesota and took all three games of a weekend series with the Twins. The Rays continue their 10-game road trip Monday in Seattle.

Who’s not?

The Chicago Cubs were swept by the Padres and dropped three of four to the Reds last week. Chicago has just one win in its last 12 games overall.

Key stat

Rory McIlroy is the first player in golf history to win multiple majors by four or more shots before turning 24. Both his wins were by eight shots.

Game of the day

Washington Nationals at San Francisco Giants (-122, 6.5)

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Cincinnati Reds third baseman Scott Rolen remains day-to-day with a sore back. The 37-year-old has missed the last five games and may require a stint on the disabled list. The Reds are already without slugger Joey Votto, who just underwent a second knee surgery last week.

Notable quotable

"It's tough to say that Rory is a Tiger Woods type player. Woods is a once-in-a-lifetime player, and Rory is at least a once-in-a-decade type player. He's that good. ... He's going to be a superstar of game, which he already is. But he's a real superstar now."- Graeme McDowell after Rory McIlroy’s victory at the PGA Championship.

Betting news and notes

The White Sox have dropped seven of Peavy’s last 10 starts, but Toronto is just 2-9 in its last 11 games against right-handed starters.

The Astros have dropped 23 of their last 29 games against National League Central teams and are 10-45 in their last 55 road games.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have gone 25-10 in their last 35 games at home. Pirates’ hurlers have held the opposition to two earned runs or less 33 times in the first 56 games at PNC Park.

The Nationals have won 12 of their last 14 road contests and own the best road winning percentage (.639) in the bigs.

5 Things You Need to Know in Sports

Want to start your day off right? Looking for some action and the top events of the day? Baseball and football are on tap tonight with the Olympics finally over. Here is a brief look at the top four important matchups of the day along with a glance at future odds.

1)Dallas at Oakland, NFL Preseason Week 1

The final game of preseason Week 1 goes on Monday night. The two teams of the seventies aren't quite what they used to be. Dallas should be improved defensively, especially in the backfield. Both starting WRs Dez Bryant and Miles Austin are expected to miss the game due to hamstring injuries. Carson Palmer gets the nod for the Raiders, though he probably won't play a lot. Dallas is 10-19 ATS L29 vs. AFC West. Oakland is a 1-point favorite and the total is 35.

2)Texas at NY Yankees, Ryan Dempster (1-0, 6.35 ERA) vs. David Phelps (2-3, 2.42 ERA)

The Yankees need a strong pitching performance from Phelps. Their AL East lead keeps getting smaller and with C.C. Sabathia now on the DL, the Bronx Bombers are pitching-thin. Texas has a little more cushion in the AL West. Texas currently has the best record in the American League. Yankees are 8-3 last 11 in series. Yankees opened as a -110 favorite and the opening total was 10.

3)Washington at San Francisco, Gio Gonzalez (14-6, 3.32 ERA) vs. Ryan Vogelsong (10-5, 2.27 ERA)

Washington is 39-22 on the road. Here is a great pitching matchup on paper. Gonzalez bounced back in his last start with a complete game, 4-3 win over Houston. He even hit a home run to help his cause. But he's not having the type of year Vogelsong is having a great season. In his last 10 starts, he's given up over 3 runs just once. San Francisco is 9-3 last 12 at home in series. The Giants opened as -125 favorites and the total opened at 6.5.

4)Tampa Bay at Seattle, Alex Cobb (6-8, 4.32 ERA) vs. Blake Beavan (7-6, 5.12)

Is there a hotter team right now than the Tampa Bay Rays? They've won six in a row and that's basically coincided with the return of 3B Evan Longoria. Just his presence in the lineup makes everybody better. Tampa Bay kicked off a 10-game road trip with a three-game sweep against Minnesota over the weekend. Seattle is only 4 games under .500 at home. Tampa Bay is 9-2 last 11 in this series. Tampa Bay opened as a -130 favorite and the total opened at 7.5.

5)Odds to win the Atlantic Coast Conference

College football starts on August 30 and practices have begun so now is the time to take a look at the odds to win the college conferences. Here's a look at the odds to win the ACC from 5dimes. The championship will be played in Charlotte, NC on Dec. 1. Florida State is the heavy favorite this year.

ACC Champion

Florida State +100
Virginia Tech +300
Clemson +550

Miami FL +1700
Virginia +1900
NC State +2300
Wake Forest +5000
