Opinion
KANSAS (-3 1/2) 67 Kentucky 57
07-Jan-06 09:00 AM Pacific Time
Kentucky was supposed to be a top 10 team this season, but the Wildcats simply haven’t played that well this season and they are 0-3 straight up against the 3 best teams that they’ve faced this season (Iowa, North Carolina and Indiana). Kansas is a young team, but the Jayhawks have talent all over the floor and coach Bill Self has them playing with a lot of intensity on the defensive side of the floor – allowing only 35.5% shooting this season. Kansas has only beaten one decent team this season (Cal), but my ratings favor Kansas by 5 ½ points using all games and by 2 points using only games against good competition. The opening line of Kansas by 3 points seems fair and the Jayhawks apply to a very good 112-39-5 ATS non-conference home momentum situation. I’ll lay 3 points or less with Kansas in a 2- Star Best Bet.
3 Star Selection
Georgia Southern 83 THE CITADEL 63
07-Jan-06 10:00 AM Pacific Time
The Citadel is a bad team that got even worse when beefy forward Warren McLendon (10.9 points, 5.4 rebounds per game) was kicked off the team in early December. Georgia Southern, meanwhile, is among the best teams in the Southern Conference and should be focused for their conference opener. In fact, Georgia Southern applies to a solid 80-41- 2 ATS conference road opening favorite angle at -13 points or less and my ratings favor Georgia Southern by 16 points using all of The Citadel’s games and by 19 ½ points if I only use their games since McLendon was cut from the team. I’ll lay 13 points or less with Georgia Southern and will make them a 3-Star at -12 points or less. Downgrade Georgia Southern to a 2-Star Best Bet at -12 ½ or -13 (pass at more than -13).
Opinion
Oklahoma (-5) 68 NEBRASKA 58
07-Jan-06 10:30 AM Pacific Time
Oklahoma returned 4 starters from a team that ranked among the best 20 in the nation, but the Sooners have not come close to living up to their potential so far this season. However, coach Sampson’s teams have always struggled a bit in regular season non-conference games (just 32-43-5 ATS) before picking up his team’s level of play in conference season (93-74-3 ATS in regular season conference games). Sampson’s teams have actually played 2.1 points better in conference than in pre-conference games the last 4 seasons and the Sooners apply to a solid 80-41-2 ATS road favorite situation that plays on teams that are playing a conference foe after a series of non-conference opponents. That scenario should get the Sooners more focused and I expect them to play much better defensively in the conference than they have so far this season (a mediocre 44.8% FG allowed). My ratings favor Oklahoma by only 3 ½ points in this game, but they are likely to play a couple of points better now that conference season has started. The situation isn’t quite strong enough to make the Sooners a Best Bet at the current line, but I will make Oklahoma a 2-Star Best Bet if they become a favorite of 3 points or less.
3 Star Selection
Kent State 75 CENTRAL MICHIGAN 55
07-Jan-06 11:00 AM Pacific Time
Central Michigan is a horrible team that is already 0-6 ATS as an underdog this season. I don’t expect the Chippewas to put up much of a fight against a superior Kent team that applies to a very strong 131-49-5 ATS big road favorite momentum situation. Central Michigan is 22-40-4 ATS as a double-digit underdog under coach Jay Smith (14- 35-3 ATS when the opponent hadn’t beaten them already during the season) and my ratings favor Kent by 13 points. I’ll lay 14 points or less with Kent State and they are a solid 3-Star Best Bet at -13 points or less (2-Stars at -13 ½ or -14 points).
Opinion
NORTH CAROLINA (-2 ½) 75 NC State 68
07-Jan-06 12:00 PM Pacific Time
NC State is a better team than youthful North Carolina, but the Wolfpack apply to a very negative 4-38-1 ATS subset of a 61-157-10 ATS road letdown situation that is based on their long win streak. Normally, I make a solid Best Bet against the team that applies to that angle, but NC State is 23-6-1 ATS in their last 30 games as an underdog. My ratings favor North Carolina by 2 points using only their games against competitive teams (they’re running up the score against bad teams), so the line is fair, but I’ll resist making this game a Best Bet based on NC State’s dog record.
Opinion
Lsu (+12 points or more only) 73 CONNECTICUT 78
07-Jan-06 01:00 PM Pacific Time
LSU has played very well when stepping up in class this season, losing by just 3 points to Cincinnati on a neutral floor and by only 2 points on the road against unbeaten Ohio State. LSU hasn’t been that good in general, and my ratings favor U Conn by 10 ½ points using only games played against competitive teams for each side. LSU would apply to a solid 116-55-1 ATS road underdog situation if the line goes up to +12 points or more and I’ll take LSU in a 2-Star Best Bet at +12 points or more.
3 Star Selection
Bowling Green 69 WESTERN MICHIGAN 65
07-Jan-06 01:00 PM Pacific Time
Western Michigan has dominated the MAC’s Western Division the last few years and they were considered one of the favorites this season despite having an untested corps of young players. That group of youngsters was considered to be the MAC’s best recruiting class but apparently they don’t know the value of playing defense, as the Broncos have allowed opponents to make 48.8% of their shots. Western Michigan’s senior pointguard Brian Snider is taking on too much responsibility for the offense, which is not good considering that he’s never been a good shooter and is hitting just 30% of his shots this year – which is not the percentage you want from the guy that takes more shots than anyone else. Western Michigan is just 1-7 ATS and they remain overrated heading into this game. Bowling Green struggled out of gate this season, but the Falcons have improved since senior guard Steven Wright became eligible to play 5 games ago. Wright is the Falcons’ best defender (1.6 steals per game) and Bowling Green has allowed just 34% shooting in 4 games against Division 1 competition with Wright in the lineup. If I use all of Bowling Green’s games I would get a fair line of Western Michigan by 2 points, but the Falcons have been 8 points better on average in games with Wright. It’s tough to say how much of that is just random variance, but I do know that the Falcons are better now than they were earlier this season and they apply to a solid 105-52-3 ATS road underdog momentum situation today. I’ll take 3 points or more in a 2- Star Best Bet on Bowling Green and I’ll make the Falcons a 3-Star Best Bet at +5 points or more. Downgrade Bowling Green to a 2-Star Best Bet if they become an underdog of less than 5 points.
2 Star Selection
San Diego (-5 points or less) 79 LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 67
07-Jan-06 03:00 PM Pacific Time
San Diego is 9-1 ATS this season, including 8 straight spread wins, while the banged up Loyola Lions are only 3-9 ATS on the season. San Diego will certainly be focused for this game, their first conference game of the season, as the Toreros apply to a solid 80-41-2 ATS conference road opening favorite angle. My ratings favor San Diego by 6 points and I’ll lay 5 points or less with the Toreros in a 2-Star Best Bet. Upgrade San Diego to a 3-Star Best Bet at -3 points or less.

PHOENIX +1.5 over San Antonio (9:05 Eastern)
Best game of the day as the Spurs travel into Phoenix - a rematch of the Western Conference Finals. San Antonio obviously dominated that and went on to win the Championship. Thus, their role as a road favorite here. But the Suns are peaking for this. They crushed Miami by 18 points on Friday. They've won 11 of 13 home games and yet find themselves as the dog here. Phoenix is 12-4 ATS this season off two games scoring 100+. And, the Spurs are still just 5-16 ATS on the road vs. good teams (60%+ SU) over the last three seasons. San Antonio is playing back-to-back games here as well. If this were in San Antonio - all Spurs. But, it's not. Take the home dog.
the wunderdog
EDMONTON -165 over Toronto (7:05 Eastern)
Toronto is on a 6-1 run but they've still lost three of their last five on the road where they are 8-10 on the season. At home, Edmonton scores 3.6 per game. Toronto can score but underdogs scoring 3+ goals/game on the season off a tight game in which 3 or less total goals were scores are just 14-39 (26%) over the last 5 seasons. Edmonton gets up for good opponents winning 71% of the time this year vs. teams with winning records. I like Edmonton.
