Sports Reporter best bet for today ..hoops

*CREIGHTON over SOUTHERN ILLINOIS by 14

Here’s another critical game (aren’t they all?) in the Missouri Valley Conference. If this conference

doesn’t get more than one bid to the NCAA tourney, something is seriously wrong

with this sport. Anyhow, Creighton has three scores to settle with the red hot Salukis including

a, 62-48, defeat on the road last month in which the Blue Jays committed 18 turnovers,

took 11 fewer foul shots and were a god awful 16-49 (32.7%) from the field. Chalk it up to

every good team plays an absolute stinker once in a while. The Jays are undefeated at home

(12-0 SU, 7-3 ATS) where an excellent defense (60 PPG, 39.2%) has keyed its success.

CREIGHTON, 75-61.

NC CHARLOTTE over *WAKE FOREST by 5

As the Demon Deacons continue their pursuit of an NIT invitation (eight losses in their last

nine games) maybe the best thing that could happen is for them to play a non-conference

game. Or not. The 49ers, as you well know, reside in North Carolina and are not in the ACC,

so this game is a big one for them. Charlotte, with Bobby Lutz at the helm, always plays good

defense (66 PPG on the road) and it’s that defense that has enabled them to cover six of

eight away games. The Deacons have been killed by their inept defense all season. Why

would this game be any different? NC CHARLOTTE, 75-74.

BEST BET

*COLORADO over TEXAS TECH by 24

We’ve been making some fun in prior write ups of teams that had grand plans in October

and are now facing the reality of not making the NCAA tourney. The Red Raiders are in a different

category entirely. Forget about failing to be invited to the NCAAs without a miracle finish

in the Big 12 tourney: This team has a better than even chance of finishing below .500.

Tech has been hideous on the road losing six of seven games (1-6 ATS) and being outscored

by 16 PPG allowing the opposition to score 75 points nightly on 46.6% shooting overall and

40.9 from three on an average of 22 treys per night. Those are Baylor Bears numbers, folks!

The Buffaloes, with a 11-1 record in Colorado and a scoring differential of 22 PPG, will roam

plenty at home. COLORADO, 91-67.

BEST BET

*HOFSTRA over NORTHEASTERN by 18

The Pride fell flat on their collective faces after big wins against NC Wilmington, 92-87, in

triple OT and, five days later, at Old Dominion, 76-68, as nine-point dogs. They were run over

by the Huskies, 89-73, at Northeastern collapsing completely after building up an eightpoint

half time lead. Slick Pride guards Antoine Agudio and Loren Stokes did their part with

45 points on 19-33 shooting, but the rest of the starters shot 10-37 (27%). The Pride has

been extremely tough at home (10-0 SU, 6-2 ATS), so if they have any “pride” avenging that

loss would be a clear sign that this team might really be ready to make some noise. HOFSTRA,

84-66.

WISCONSIN MILWAUKEE over *CLEVELAND STATE by 17

Perhaps it was boredom on the part of the Panthers having blasted Cleveland State twice

last year or getting used to life without former coach Bruce Pearl or a combination of both,

but Milwaukee struggled as 21-point chalk in the first game against the Vikings in winning

by a touchdown and an extra point. Whatever. The Panthers are back on the prowl and

should win this game as handily as they did last year when they were laying ten points and

won by 22. WISCONSIN MILWAUKEE, 79-62.

***BEST BET

LSU over Florida* by 9

You can’t get physical with LSU because they’ll laugh it off. You can’t move the ball in

the paint against them because they take up too much space both vertically and horizontally.

You can’t shoot too many 3s against them because they push you too far away

from the hoop, and the Gators weren’t going to get as many from downtown as they

normally would anyway, with Lee Humphrey and his 45% shooting eye are gone for a

few weeks. The home fans enjoyed their lopsided win against Kentucky last week and

now they have to flip and feel the other side of the emotional coin. The penetration of

Alabama guard Ronald Steele helped propel us all to a win against LSU last Saturday,

but Florida’s Taurean Green can’t do it like the man of Steele! Florida’s “long and lanky”

edges vs. most opponents vanish in this match-up. LSU, 70-61.

***BEST BET

San Diego State* over Utah by 20

SDS beat the Utes on both boards, at the 3-point line and got more steals when they

won in Salt Lake City. Utah 6-8 freshman Shaun Green is about to feel the rigors of

the MWC road on a team just 2-6 in its last eight, as the team’s second-leading threepoint

taker and maker figures to dry up right about now and the SDS marksman continue

on some good paces: 50% on two pointers, 41.4% on three-pointers. As a team,

the Fisher Kings get to the free-throw line often enough (32nd most frequent in the

nation), and create a lot of second-chance opportunities (27th in offensive rebounding

percentage). SAN DIEGO STATE, 79-59.

**PREFERRED

Iowa State over Kansas* by 2

Big players rise up in big games, so ISU’s Curtis Stinson should carry his team to a big

upset try against a KU bunch that enjoyed “too big” a FG% margin (58% to 37.7%)

in a 10-point road win the first time around. Iowa State can usually play with anyone.

They can lose to anyone, too, but this seems like a good spot to capitalize on recent

inflation/deflations in power ratings. Kansas can burn some chalk-players at the freethrow

line. IOWA STATE, 78-76.

**PREFERRED

Southern Miss* over UTEP by 6

Let’s get physical! UTEP is short on players. Some opponents can’t take advantage

because they are also on the wrong end of the numbers game. But Southern Miss’ Larry

Eustachy is playing 10 players at least 10 minutes per game. Most of them are not

among college basketball’s elite, but they probably don’t need to be on this particular

day. They recently out-rebounded a good-sized SMU team that has put an emphasis

on out-muscling opponents. One of the players missing at UTEP is their best outside

shooter Ayala. So it’s all about denying UTEP center Tofi in the paint, making him

work for his points, getting him to the free throw line – where he’ll miss – and getting

him tired so he commits fouls and is outta there! SOUTHERN MISS, 55-49.

**PREFERRED

Missouri State over Northern Iowa* by 5

Road dog Missouri State has revenge for a 10-point home loss last month, when they

suffered a bad shooting night and Northern Iowa’s Erik Crawford complemented Eric

Jacobsen’s 21 points with 15 of his own. Crawford is out, and Jacobsen has been in a

shooting slump, probably not a coincidence. MISSOURI STATE, 67-62.

Gold Sheet best bets for saturday in hoops

COLORADO 87 - Texas Tech 63—Veteran CU off to its best conference

start since ‘96-‘97, so will gladly “lay it” vs. TT quintet that still appears clueless on

road, going 1-9 SU & vs. spread in its first 10 away from Lubbock. High-powered

Buff attack (83 ppg), spearheaded by electric G Roby (19 ppg), should tear up a soft

Red Raider defense yielding 74 ppg away. 04-TECH -16 97-90

WIS.-GREEN BAY 76 - Youngstown St. 59—YSU’s early-season

pointspread magic fading into memory now that Penguins’ lack of presence of

boards being exploited and opponents routinely exposing defensive flaws. Green

Bay capable of extending margins at Resch Center, and Fighting Phoenix itching to

atone for humiliating road loss Jan. 5 when YSU hit scorching 63% from floor! 05-

YSU -5 95-70; 04-UWG -16 78-55, Uwg -7' 78-49
