Weather to watch

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees: A 40 percent chance of thunderstorms at first pitch with the threat of precipitation decreasing throughout the evening hours.

Who’s hot?

The Tampa Bay Rays have put together back-to-back wins after dropping consecutive contests to the Mariners. The Rays are the hottest team in baseball with nine victories over their last 11 games.

Who’s not?

The Los Angeles Angels have only two wins in their last seven games and find themselves 2.5 games out of the final wild card spot.

Key stat

Webb Simpson's last 10 rounds at the Wyndham Championship: 45-under, 65.5 scoring average, +17.6 strokes gained putting.

Game of the day

Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves (-145, 8)

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Jacoby Ford suffered a foot injury in Friday night's preseason game and was spotted on crutches in the locker room afterwards. Ford missed significant time with a foot injury last year. The Raiders will update his condition early next week.

Notable quotable

“A manager is not something you can go and change like you change your underwear. It can happen at some point, but the possibility of it happening, especially in the middle of the season, is a small percent, so that's not our case."- Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz on manager Bobby Valentine.

Betting news and notes

Blue Jays hurler Carlos Villanueva is perfect at the Rogers Centre this season, going 4-0 with a 2.72 ERA in five starts and 11 relief appearances.

The San Francisco Giants have won 10 of their last 14 road games since the All-Star break, outscoring opponents by a 103-45 margin.

The Arizona Diamondbacks were just 3-44 when scoring three runs or fewer going into Thursday but have won the last two games by scores of 2-1 and 3-1.

5 Things You Need to Know in Sports

Want to start your day off right? Looking for some action and the most interesting events of the day? There are seven football games on Saturday and Sunday. Here is a brief look at the top four important matchups of the day along with a glance at future odds.

1)NY Giants at NY Jets, NFL Preseason Week 2, MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ

The Giants and Jets get together and neither team has to travel. The drama continues with the Jets as Mark Sanchez has to stave off his critics and Tim Tebow hopes to show better than last week as a passer. He'll likely face most of the Giants' backups. New York Jets are 14-4 ATS L18 in series. NY Jets are a 1-point favorite and the total is 36.5.

2)Washington at Chicago, Preseason Week 2, Soldier Field

Robert Griffin III makes his second appearance and his second road game. He'll take on the Bears, who are without LB Brian Urlacher (knee). But the Bears, who were destroyed last week at home against Denver (31-3). They several key starters including QB Jay Cutler, who will play in this game. Washington is 3-9 ATS after scoring 9 or less points. Chicago is a 1.5-point favorite and the total is 37.

3)Dallas at San Diego, Preseason Week 2, Qualcomm Stadium

Dallas is coming off quite the yawner on Monday night, beating Oakland 3-0. But they lost TE Jason Witten to a spleen injury. He could be ready by the regular season. San Diego defeated Green Bay in their opener, 21-13. They need to establish a top wide receiver to replace Vincent Jackson. Another Vincent (Brown) stepped up last week with 4 catches for 81 yards and a TD. San Diego is 25-10 ATS coming off a home game. San Diego is a 3-point favorite and the total is 37.

4)Indianapolis at Pittsburgh, Preseason Week 2, Heinz Field

The Steelers were edged by the Eagles last week. Their passing game should be strong even without holdout Mike Wallace. Their running game is another story due to injuries.
