Mariners @ Yankees | Yankee Stadium | 1:05 p.m.
J. Moyer (L) 3-1, 4.14 vs. O. Hernandez (R) 3-1, 1.75
Scouting report:
Alfonso Soriano led off Sunday's game in Seattle with a homer off Moyer, so let's see if this rematch starts any better for Seattle. Hernandez and Moyer both had no-decisions in the last one, won by the Yankees. Hernandez and New York held Seattle to a .140 average in that three-game series.
Angels @ Blue Jays | SkyDome | 1:05 p.m.
S. Schoeneweis (L) 1-3, 6.53 vs. J. Miller (R) 1-0, 8.38
Scouting report:
The Angels' victory over Toronto Monday was a no-decision for Schoeneweis, but it was a positive step for him as he had a quality start and the club won its first game in five of his outings. Miller, pushed back for this start as Brandon Lyon was scheduled late for Friday, lasted just 3.2 innings Saturday as the Angels began streaking.
Rangers @ Indians | Jacobs Field | 1:05 p.m.
I. Valdes (R) 2-3, 3.60 vs. B. Colon (R) 3-3, 3.48
Scouting report:
Valdes pitched six strong innings to beat Colon and the Indians Monday at The Ballpark at Arlington. Colon has been a microcosm of the Indians' first month. He won his first three and the Tribe was all the rage; he lost his last three and they have been among the worst.
Royals @ Orioles | Oriole Park | 1:35 p.m.
J. Suppan (R) 2-3, 3.19 vs. R. Lopez (R) 3-0, 2.42
Scouting report:
If these pitchers carry over their recent success, then this will be a great matchup to watch. Suppan threw a two-hit shutout at Detroit when K.C. needed it most (although it didn't help Tony Muser's cause). Lopez is becoming one of the big stories of 2002. He moved from the bullpen into the rotation and has been unstoppable, beating Boston the last two starts. Baltimore is 6-1 when he touches the ball.
Marlins @ Brewers | Miller Park | 2:05 p.m.
N. Teut (L) 0-0, 0.00 vs. B. Sheets (R) 1-3, 4.75
Scouting report:
Teut (pronounced TOIT) will make his Major League debut in the middle game of this series. He had an 0-1 record and 3.75 ERA for Triple-A Calgary and is being recalled for this start. Since Sheets shut down Houston on April 2, the Brew Crew is 0-5 when this high-potential right-hander starts. He is 0-1 against the Marlins.
Braves @ Cardinals | Busch Stadium | 2:10 p.m.
A. Lopez (R) 1-2, 3.97 vs. M. Crudale (R) 0-0, 2.70
Scouting report:
Crudale was the stop-gap starter for a 5-0 victory at Montreal last week, and he held Montreal to two hits and no runs. The bad news was that it was in two innings. They'll need him to think like a starter and not a reliever for this one. Don't blame Lopez too much for that 7-1 loss Monday to Houston. He returned to the rotation to allow just three hits and two earned runs over five innings.
Red Sox @ Devil Rays | Tropicana Field | 6:15 p.m.
D. Lowe (R) 4-1, 2.04 vs. J. Kennedy (L) 1-2, 4.60
Scouting report:
This is when we always think of the three words in baseball: Johnny Vander Meer. He is the only pitcher who has thrown back-to-back no-hitters (for Cincinnati), and Lowe will give it his best shot. Hey, he threw the first no-hitter at Fenway in 37 years, so what's a little more history? Kennedy took the loss Tuesday at Minnesota but had a quality start. Tampa Bay is 1-4 in his starts.
A's @ White Sox | Comiskey Park | 7:05 p.m.
T. Hudson (R) 3-2, 1.87 vs. T. Ritchie (R) 2-2, 3.03
Scouting report:
Hudson beat Ritchie and the Sox Monday in Oakland, throwing a three-hit shutout over eight innings. Chicago had its problems with Dye-Chavez-Tejada in the order. Check out these numbers for Hudson in that game: 17 groundball outs, 3 flyball outs. When he has a ratio like that, he has added to his victory total. Comiskey bodes well for another outing like that.
Rockies @ Phillies | Veterans Stadium | 7:05 p.m.
J. Jennings (R) 2-2, 3.67 vs. R. Wolf (L) 1-1, 6.45
Scouting report:
Jennings pitched seven scoreless, four-hit innings to beat Philadelphia Monday at Coors Field. Both of his losses were on the road -- at Los Angeles and Cincinnati -- but he had a quality start in each of them. Wolf was on the losing end of Jennings' performance Monday, walking five and striking out just one. He threw an amazing 126 pitches in just 6.2 innings -- wow.
Tigers @ Twins | Metrodome | 7:05 p.m.
M. Redman (L) 0-3, 6.03 vs. E. Milton (L) 4-2, 5.20
Scouting report:
Redman, traded by Minnesota for Todd Jones last July, held his former teammates to one run and scattered seven runs over seven innings. Although he got a no-decision, it was a step forward because he avoided the big inning for the first time. Milton won Tuesday by avenging a loss to Tampa Bay in his previous outing, and he has won three of his last four starts. His first victory of the season was April 13 at the Met against Detroit.
Mets @ Astros | Astros Field | 8:05 p.m.
J. D'Amico (R) 2-1, 2.94 vs. C. Hernandez (L) 2-0, 3.65
Scouting report:
While you're waiting for the big Leiter-Oswalt showdown Sunday, this one will be fun to watch. Hernandez has looked good this season and is coming off a seven-inning scoreless outing to beat Atlanta. D'Amico is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three career appearances against the Astros. Did you know the Mets lead the Majors in team ERA? It was 2.67 through Thursday.
Pirates @ Padres | Qualcomm Stadium | 10:05 p.m.
J. Anderson (L) 2-3, 6.04 vs. B. Tollberg (R) 1-3, 8.19
Scouting report:
Here's another quick comebacker. Tollberg got his first 2002 victory by holding Pittsburgh to two earned runs over six innings Monday. He was in danger of being demoted to the minors, which is always good incentive. Anderson was chased in a five-run third inning and has lost three of his last four starts.
Expos @ D-Backs | Bank One Ballpark | 10:05 p.m.
T. Ohka (R) 3-2, 3.86 vs. B. Anderson (L) 0-2, 6.75
Scouting report:
After throwing an inning of relief two nights earlier, Ohka came back to beat the Cardinals Monday in Montreal with 7.1 solid innings -- seven hits, two earned runs. Anderson gets the ball as a starter for the first time since April 13. He has six relief appearances between these starts, taking a tough setback against Colorado as his only decision in that time.
Cubs @ Dodgers | Dodger Stadium | 10:10 p.m.
J. Bere (R) 1-3, 6.48 vs. K. Ishii (L) 5-0, 3.03
Scouting report:
Ishii beat Bere and the Cubs Monday at Wrigley Field, and will try to become the first Dodger starter to go 6-0 since Orel Hershiser in 1988. Bere is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in two career outings against L.A., and lasted 7.2 innings in the last one but allowed 10 hits and four runs.
Reds @ Giants | Pacific Bell Park | 10:35 p.m.
J. Haynes (R) 2-3, 5.54 vs. J. Schmidt (R) 0-0, 8.31
Scouting report:
Schmidt is still trying to get comfortable in his comeback from rotator-cuff surgery. He lasted just 3.2 innings Tuesday in the victory over Philadelphia, and was fortunate to leave with a no-decision. J.T. Snow, Reggie Sanders and Benito Santiago unloaded on Haynes in his loss Monday to the Giants, and look for a Barry Bonds breakout. He is 7 for 15 with three homers and five walks against Haynes.
