DR BOB

Thursday Night 3-Star Best Bet
***NC State 24 GEORGIA TECH (-4 ½) 20
NC State is 12-0 ATS as an underdog away from home under coach Chuck Amato and the Wolfpack are a better team than
Georgia Tech. NC State started the season with a misleading 16-20 home loss to highly ranked Virginia Tech, who the
Wolfpack out-gained 6.1 yards per play to 3.7 yppl but lost because of a -3 in turnover margin. NC State went on to
whip Eastern Kentucky and then lost as a home favorite to an underrated North Carolina team before getting last week
off in preparation for this game. For the season, the Wolfpack rate at 0.7 yppl better than average on offense (5.8
yppl against teams that would combine to allow 5.1 yppl to an average team) and 1.4 yppl better than average
defensively (4.1 yppl against teams that would combine to average 5.5 yppl against an average defensive team). The
Wolfpack had the nation's best defense last season and they are once again rated very high defensively, and they
should have no trouble limiting a Georgia Tech attack that is just 0.4 yppl better than average with quarterback
Reggie Ball in the game (4.9 yppl against teams that would allow 4.5 yppl to an average offense. Ball missed the
Connecticut game). Georgia Tech does have a very good defense, allowing 5.0 yppl to a schedule of teams that would
average 6.0 yppl against an average team, but the Yellow Jackets aren't as good defensively without injured star DE
Eric Henderson. NC State is better than Georgia Tech on both sides of the ball and much better in special teams too,
and my math model favors NC State by 5 points in this game (although the math doesn't officially apply because NC
State has not played 4 games). The Wolfpack also qualify in a very strong 53-12-1 ATS statistical profile indicator
if they are an underdog of more than 3 points (that indicator plays on dogs of more than 3 points with a dominating
defense), and Amato's perfect road dog record adds support to an underrated Wolfpack team that looks like a very
good play. Downgrade NC State to a 2-Star Best Bet if they become an underdog of less than 4 points (Strong Opinion
as a dog of less than 3 points).

Blues' were embarrassed in Detroit last night 5-1. St. Louis goalie Patrick Lalime had an off night so whether he comes back tonight or backup Divis plays look for a better all-around effort from the Blues.

North Carolina State Wolfpack at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Thursday, October 6, 2005 7:30 P.M. EST EST

Clubs went under a total of 41 last year. Since 1992 GEORGIA TECH is 15-3 UNDER when playing on a Thursday, 10-1 UNDER in home games after having won 3 out of their last 4 games and 25-12 UNDER after 1 or more consecutive losses against the spread since 1992. Another angle in support of the UNDER play says to Play Under - Any team against the total (NC STATE) - off an upset loss to a conference rival as a home favorite, in the first half of the season. (54-25 since 1992.)

Play on: Under

BEN BURNS' ACC TOTAL OF MONTH! *7-1 L8 CFB TOTALS $35.00

Game: NC State at Georgia Tech Oct 6 2005 7:30PM
Prediction: under
Reason: Both these teams have played their fair share of Thursday Night games. The bulk of those Thursday games, for both teams, were of the low-scoring variety. The Yellow Jackets have seen the Under go 15-3 their last 18 Thursday Night games. During the same stretch, the Wolfpack have seen the Under go 9-2 their last 11 Thursday Night games. Last season's meeting between these clubs had an over/under line of 41. That game finished below the number with a final score of 24-14. A closer look shows that the defense was actually even more dominant then the final indicates as the score was still 14-7 in the fourth quarter and 14 of the 38 combined points came via defensive touchdowns. Although neither team demonstrated it in its last game, both clubs boast strong defenses again this season. I'm expecting another low-scoring affair. Play on the UNDER *ACC TOTAL OF THE MONTH

Dr Bob (Friday)
Friday Night 2-Star Best Bet
**CONNECTICUT (-6 ½) 27 Syracuse 13
Connecticut and Syracuse both have challenged offensive units, but the Huskies have proven to have a very good
defense this season and should be good enough to beat the poor- traveling Orange, who are now just 9-31-1 ATS as a
road underdog against teams with winning records. Syracuse has been horrible offensively, averaging just 4.3 yards
per play against a slate of defensive units that would combine to allow 5.6 yppl to an average attack. Connecticut's
offense has been nearly as bad, as the Huskies have managed just 5.4 yppl despite facing teams that would combine to
allow 6.5 yppl to an average team. Syracuse has been decent defensively, allowing 5.2 yppl to teams that would
average 5.3 yppl against an average defense, but the Orange run defense (4.7 yards per rushing play allowed to teams
that would average 4.5 yprp against an average defense) will allow the Huskies to have success doing the only thing
that they can do ? run the ball (U Conn has averaged 249 rushing yards at 5.4 yprp against teams that would allow
5.3 yprp to an average team). The difference in this game is a Connecticut defense that has yielded just 3.6 yppl
this season to teams that would combine to average 4.2 yppl against an average team and that unit proved themselves
by holding Georgia Tech to 4.3 yppl (good even with Georgia Tech's backup quarterback playing that game). Overall,
my math model favors Connecticut by 10 points and Syracuse applies to a negative 21-72-4 ATS situation. I'll lay 7
points or less with Connecticut in a 2-Star Best Bet. Downgrade Connecticut to a Strong Opinion if they become
favored by more than 7 points.
