Tip of the Day - Jan. 11, 2005
TIP OF THE DAY
Sport: National Football League
Game: Carolina Panthers @ Chicago Bears on Jan 15 2006 4:30PM
Prediction: Over
Current Line: -3 105
Over/Under: 30 -110

Reason: The posted number is way to low considering
that both teams have capable offenses. Rex Grossman
has revived the Bears and giving them confidence that
they can score points. He has playmakers at the wide
receiver position. Carolina put up 23 points against a
solid Giants defense and will come close to reaching
that number yet again. Carolina wins the game as they
game goes over by a touchdown.

Bettorsworld Key Plays

Steelers/Colts - PASS

This is a scary game, in our opinion, for the Colts. Our number on the game has this one closer than the current 9.5. The Steelers, like all remaining playoff teams, are hot as hell and are playing their best football of the season at just the right time. They are no strangers to the playoffs either having lost to the Pats in the AFC championship game just one year ago. There are tons of questions swirling around the Colts that quite frankly, no one has the answers to until approximately 430pm est on Sunday. How will the combination of the layoff and Tony Dungy's sons death affect this team? Will they be flat? Or will they be downright nasty and dominating like they are capable of? Make no mistake about it, this Colts team is good. They are loaded on offense. Playing at home on a surface they were built for. They are the better team here, playing with the added home field advantage. The should win this game, and we wouldn't be surprised if they did so in spectacular fashion, sending a message to the rest of the playoff teams that the Colts are here and ready to get to the Super Bowl. But we're not prepared to lay the big number here on a team with questions to answer. The Steelers are a tough out, so we'll watch this one from the sidelines.

5* Bears pk -135 over Panthers

Defense is the name of the game in this one. This Bears defense is a thing of beauty. They held these same Panthers to 55 yards rushing earlier this year leaving the Panthers no choice but to go to the air...........that didn't work either as Jake Delhomme was sacked a season high 8 times. That was November 20th. Do we think the Panthers have all the answers to the Bears "D" this time around? No. If you like old school, smash mouth football, this should be the best game of the weekend. It won't be pretty. May be boring for some. But expect the Bears to score just enough to win and expect their defense to bottle up the Panthers offense. This aint the Giants defense! Might want to consider the under here as well. If the game goes as we think it will go, we don't see it reaching 30 points. Not willing to lay the points her so we'll use the short priced money line.

100% PERFECT 10-0 ATS NFL DIVISIONAL BLOWOUT

#306

Speed kills. Remember that when you watch this contest between Indianapolis and Pittsburgh.

Indianapolis uses its own version of basketball on grass when the Colts compete in the RCA Dome. Offensively, Indy quarterback Peyton Manning can choose from a solid group of speed on the outside to attack a Pittsburgh secondary that is average at best. During the regular season, the Steelers allowed close to 200 yards per game through the air. With an extra week to prepare and get their timing down, the Colts will have the Men of Steel backpedaling all day long.

There are a couple of great post season systems that apply to the Horseshoes in this contest. First, NFL playoff home teams are a solid 26-8 ATS provided they enter off back-to-back ATS losses and theyre matched up against a foe that owns a won/loss percentage greater than .500 and less than .750. In this role off a non-division home game, our host skyrockets to a perfect 10-0 SU and ATS. Please note: Those 10 victories came by an average of 17.5 points per game!

Second, one of the hardest things to do in post season play is win a second consecutive road game. Since 1980, NFL playoff guests are a soft 12-38 SU and 20-30 ATS coming off a straight up post season road win. If our guest is matched up against an opponent that carries a won/loss percentage greater than .800, this system dips to a woeful 4-22 SU and 9-17 ATS. Pittsburgh is stuck in this nasty play against set.

The Colts didnt work their tails off all year long to win homefield and then lose in their first playoff game. Respect is certainly given to the Steelers and their ability to defend and run the football. Unfortunately, Indy is on a mission right now and Pittsburgh is in the way. Take INDIANAPOLIS.

10-1 ATS NFL Playoff System Shocker of the Week

#308

You hear a lot of talk about Chicagos defense and thats understandable. The Bears stop unit is the best in the playoffs and the Monsters of the Midway could win a Super Bowl based on that units play alone. However, the key to this victory wont be the play of Chicagos D. Instead, its time the Chicago offense stole the show.

The Bears already dominated the Panthers with rookie quarterback Kyle Orton behind center. Just imagine what this team will do with a healthy Rex Grossman calling the plays. Over the past few weeks, Chicagos offensive attack has improved dramatically. Carolina wont recognize this new high octane Bears offense with Grossman at the helm. When these two met earlier, the Panthers knew Orton wasnt going to beat them with his arm. Carolina better respect Grossmans ability to throw the football or John Fox and Company will be sent to the showers early!

In case you havent noticed, this will be the third consecutive road game for the Panthers. Carolina won at Atlanta in the regular season finale and then strolled into New York and dominated the Giants in the Wildcard round. That last victory against the G-Men put the Panthers is a tough technical spot. Since 1980, playoff road teams playing their third consecutive road game are a soft 3-29 SU and 8-23-1 ATS including 6-23-1 ATS in this role priced as a favorite or an underdog of +11.5 or less. Carolina is stuck in this awful play against set.

At home off a SU and ATS loss and matched up against a foe that owns a won/loss percentage greater than .460 and less than .730, Chicago owns a remarkable 25-10 ATS record. In this role battling an opponent that enters off a victory of eight points or more, the Bears improve to a sensational 10-1 ATS!

The bottom line is simple. Defense wins championships and the Bears have the best one on the field. Of course, dont be too surprised if Rex surprises Carolina with an offensive explosion of his own. Take CHICAGO.

The Black Cat

Chicago -3 Carolina

Its not unusual to see a team whip someone in the wild card round only to get whipped themselves in the 2nd round. Chicago seems to have a decent edge on Carolina, even though Carolina’s defense has improved rapidly and Chicago’s is not a whole lot better, and Carolina certainly has bigger playmakers on the offensive side. With Chicago though, you have to realize this is a team that thrives in the close game and the overall team is more important than the individual units. In this regard, Chicago has a decisive edge with home field advantage and a more consistent – if not better – defense. Fending off the Carolina pass rush and avoiding sacks and other mistakes will prove key. Chicago’s own blitzes are highly effective at creating turnovers and, not to be overly cliché, this game certainly should be decided by fumbles and interceptions.

Indianapolis -9.5 Pittsburgh

The weakest pick on the board is Indianapolis, which offers modest value. Indianapolis reads out as a completely dominant team, enough so to warrant this fat spread (especially considering the bye week advantage). Pittsburgh played a horrible game on MNF against Indianapolis and appeared intimidated in the matchup. Recent comments from the team don’t seem to allay my fears that they don’t have a lot of confidence. So I like the Colts here in a game that should tilt decisively in one direction. There is an emotional edge to consider as well, with much support for Dungy and the team in general for the exceptional play throughout the season. Few are rooting for Pittsburgh to go on. Historically, Pittsburgh has not won many playoff games on the road – I think the 75 year tally is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3, and that includes Cincinnati. Pittsburgh does have an edge in defense, but they’ll need every ounce of it against a Colts offense that is more than superior enough to neutralize that key advantage. If the Colts break out the “A” game – and of course they will – its over.
