2004 PGA TOUR +715
Head to head matchups ( 1 unit plays )
1. Chris Riley +100 vs K.J. Choi
Despite the toughening of Augusta National, The Masters is still all about putting and an imaginative short game. Chris's putter and short game are as good as anyone on tour. While K.J. is a machine at ball striking his putting is suspect and his short game lacks the imagination that will be needed here this year.
2.Scott Verplank -145 vs Chris DiMarco
Scott leads the tour in putting this year and has a steady game and steady demeanor that will serve him well here in the difficult 4 days ahead. Chris relies on a fade almost exclusively. That is not the shot that will serve him well at Augusta.
3. David Toms-130 vs John Daly ( 2 unit play )
I have been pulling for Big John as much as anyone this year. He is a fun guy to watch play and his game is perfect for Augusta. However, never known for his mental toughness, i think JD will have trouble focusing this week as his wife faces drug money laundering charges in court while this tournament is going on . I expect David to have a big week this week.
4. Stewart Cink -145 vs Chas Howell III
Stewart is 6th in putting this year and his game is peaking at the right time. He is also playing close to his home and will have a lot of fan support. While Charles also is playing in his own back yard he has played very poorly this year, has many people advising him on his swing and looks like a golfer that is undergoing paralysis by analysis.
5. Sergio Garcia +105 vs Darren Clarke
Will Sergio be the next Spaniard to follow in the footsteps of Seve and Jose Maria and have success at Augusta. After overhauling his game his recent form tells me it's possible. His imaginative short game and improved putting will serve him well here. AS impressive as the trimmed down Darren has been this year, i don't see Augusta as being a good fit for the strengths of his game.
6. Phil Mickelson -115 vs Ernie Els
Some quick numbers......Phil has 7 top tens this year...Phil has been in the top 3 the last 3 years at Augusta.....Phil has been in the top 10 at Augusta every year since 1998....Phil has moved from 41st to 14th in putting this year. Ernie has performed brilliantly at Augusta as well finishing no worse than 6th the last 4 years, but is admittedly not hitting the ball as well as he would like at present. Could this be Phil's major breakthrough ?
