James Madison was an improved team early this season with 5 starters returning from last year’s awful 6-22 squad, but the Dukes lost F David Cooper after 4 games and then lost their second best player, F Carvell Johnson in late December. The depth at forward is not good at all and James Madison has really struggled since Johnson was lost for the season. The Dukes beat Yale in their first game without Johnson, but have since lost to Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Virginia Tech, Hofstra, and Towson State by an average of 24 points while allowing 58% shooting. Virginia Commonwealth has a history under coach Jeff Capel of winning (and covering) the games that they are supposed to win, as they are 29-16-1 ATS in conference games against foes with a win percentage of .625 or less, including 13-1-1 ATS recently when not favored by more than 10 points. James Madison, meanwhile, is just 12-18 ATS as an underdog under coach Keener and Keener just does not have the horses to run with the Rams. VCU also qualifies in a solid 53-21 ATS big road favorite situation and my ratings favor the Rams by 11 points (it would be 19 ½ points if I only used James Madison’s games without Johnson). I’ll take Virginia Commonwealth in a 3-Star Best Bet at -11 points or less and I’ll Downgrade VCU to a 2-Star Best Bet at -11 ½ or 12 points (pass at more than -12).

Arkansas State has covered the spread in all 3 of their conference games, while winning the last two straight up as road underdogs. The Indians apply to a very strong 67-14-1 ATS road momentum situation tonight, but my ratings favor Middle Tennessee State by 7 ½ points in this game and the negative line value takes away enough of the value of the situation to keep this from being a Best Bet. The situation is strong enough to still give Arkansas State a solid 54.8% chance of covering at the current line of +5 ½ points, but I’ll only take Arkansas State in a 2-Star Best Bet at +7 points or more.

Pittsburgh hasn’t played since last Wednesday and teams that take that much time off sometimes have a tough time shaking off the rust, especially bigger favorites. The Panthers apply to a negative 17-43-2 ATS situation that is based on that premise and Pitt is also just 3- 10 ATS as a favorite of 9 points or more against conference foes under coach Jamie Dixon. DePaul has been a very inconsistent team this year, but my ratings suggest a fair line of Pitt by 12 points. The situation isn’t quite strong enough to make DePaul a Best Bet at the current line, but I will take DePaul in a 2-Star Best Bet if they become an underdog of 13 points or more.

The Cavaliers are just 9-27 ATS as a road underdog since the beginning of last season, including 0-6 ATS this season, but the Cavs apply to a 213-131-8 ATS bounce-back situation after their horrible effort against the Knicks on Tuesday night. My ratings favor the Lakers by only ½ a point using the appropriate home court advantage for a rested visitor and an unrested host and even my home-road ratings would favor the Lakers by just 1 ½ points. If Cleveland is ever going to win as a road underdog this is the night, but I will pass on making them a Best Bet.
