Pacific Life Holiday Bowl

Oklahoma +3 vs. Oregon: For a team that has been whining as much as Oregon has about not being in a BCS bowl, it better pay attention or Oklahoma might just blow it right out of San Diego. The Ducks finished 10-1 but got blown out by the only good team they played in a loss to USC. Fresno State, probably the next-best team they played, nearly beat them at Oregon but failed 37-34 after taking a 17-0 lead. The Ducks also were forced to finish the season with a two-headed quarterback, Dennis Dixon and Brady Leaf, after proven leader Kellen Clemens was lost for the season to injury.

Oklahoma started the season slowly, losing to TCU and UCLA and nearly losing to Tulsa, but has improved steadily since then. Even with star running back Adrian Peterson missing several games with an ankle turn, the Sooners continued to improve. Oklahoma finished the season winning five of its last six games, with its only loss coming in a very controversial last-second defeat at Texas Tech. QB Rhett Bomar's improvement has been geometric, and the Sooners' defense has played well in that six-game span, especially against pass-happy Texas Tech. Their corners, though, and have gotten beat deep by Baylor and Texas, which is where Oklahoma will be most vulnerable.

The pick: Oklahoma (best bet). Oregon's been jilted, but were the Ducks ever that good? Nobody wants to play Oklahoma now.

Wise Guy…
UTAH +8’ Georgia Tech

Don’t let there be any question that the Utes are taking this game very seriously. "It's been extremely tough on us both physically and mentally just because we've been working so hard," said junior cornerback Eric Weddle. "It's been tough, kind of like summer workouts, just because we want to be prepared for this game and not come out lackadaisical like some teams have done thus far in the bowl season." With four straight bowl victories dating back to the 1999 Las Vegas Bowl, the Utes take postseason games seriously. "We're excited to be a part of this bowl game in San Francisco and see all the sights," Weddle continued. "But we're here for a reason and that's to win a bowl game."
Tech has been very inconsistent all year and we expect it to continue.

CBB
Wise Guy…
KANSAS -21 New Orleans

Going with home teams in non-conference games off a 20 point or more win is 635-457 +132.3.

NEW MEXICO STATE +3 Texas Tech

The Red Raiders (6-6) have been hurt by injuries to four players this year, but when the team arrived for practice on Christmas Day, junior guard Drew Coffman informed the staff that he no longer wanted to remain on the team. It is no small loss. Coffman played in 11 games this year and started four of them. His best game of his college career came on Nov. 23 against Furman. The 6-foot-1 guard from Midland scored a career-high 22 points in Tech's 83-74 victory.

It also makes focusing on corrections a bit tougher and focus they need. Since opening the season with victories in five of seven games, Tech has dropped four of its last five, and all four losses have come by double digits. Knight brought in seven freshmen and one junior-college transfer and the Raiders have been hit by injuries that prevented LucQuente White, Damir Suljagic, Darryl Dora and Jon Plefka from playing at some point this year.
While Tech continues to shuffle with young players who struggle more on the road, State used the time off to have a transfer laden roster continue to gel. Tech has yet to win away from United Spirit Arena, losing at San Francisco and UNLV while also falling in three nuetral-site contests.

Texas Tech assistant coach Steve Robinson knows this is no easy contest. "New Mexico State is going to throw multiple defenses at you, both man-to-man and zone," Robinson said. "They're going to be hungry because this is their final test before conference. They should have a good crowd and they're going to probably try and go at us inside so we have to be ready to play."

Major…

HAWAII -8’ Pennsylvania

Going with home favorites of 3’-9’ in a non-conference game off a home win is 467-347 +85.3.

BINGHAMTON +5’ Idaho State

We know about the Binghamton injuries. We also know our official outlaw line is see ISU as -2. The official outlaw line is what the odds would be if there was no consideration given to public perception and balancing the action. It is the more accurate line from the standpoint of the bettor. The Bearcats are actually responding to adversity. Despite the injury woes and poor record, the Bearcats are playing somewhat better than at the start of the season. Guards Andre Heard and Troy Hailey have averaged a combined 42.5 points in the team's last two games. BU missed potential game-tying shots against both Albany and Central Connecticut State.

"Coming back from break, we played two close games that were better games for us," Fithian said. "The team and the players had more confidence in each other and it felt like maybe we were turning it around. I think we still well, but I'll be on the sidelines cheering instead of in the game helping out."

EASTERN WASHINGTON +7 Boise

Eastern will be extra motivated as they play the team that center Matt Nelson transferred to. If Nelson is fired up it won’t matter. He’s not yet eligible. The teams are pretty evenly matched as well.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT +10 unlv

This is one of the top sharp versus squares games. That means most of the sharp money is going one way and most of the sucker money the other way according to our offshore, Vegas and “outlaw” contacts. We go with the sharp money.

WASHINGTON STATE +3’ Arizona

The Cougars have added an offense to their suffocating defense and stand at an impressive 7-2. Now they host one of their biggest home games in years. Sophomore point guard Derrick Low does a nice job within coach Dick Bennett's system, and skinny 6-10 sophomore Robbie Cowgill is a deceptively good post player. Bennett is mixing and matching around them, with guards Randy Green and Kyle Weaver perhaps the most formidable of the interchangeable parts.

December losses to Connecticut, Michigan State and Houston knocked Arizona out of The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time in 18 seasons. Of greater concern has been the way the Wildcats (7-3) struggled in victories over the likes of Western Kentucky and Northern Arizona.

This is a Zona team in disarray. Coach Lute Olson tinkered with lineups and offensive sets before settling on an undersized set featuring just one legitimate post player, 6-10 Ivan Radenovic, and 6-7 freshman Marcus Williams. The Wildcats aren't shooting well and will have to win with defense at least as long as guard Jawann McClellan is sidelined with academic issues. Yet they are laying points on the road to a better defensive team. Arizona allows 41.8 percent from the field but WSU only 35.7. Teams normally getting 70.9 ppg average a measly 52.9 to the Cougs. Arizona allows 62.4 to 73.5. In stunning fashion State is better offensively in shooting percentage by a 5.9 margin.
Folks a home dog that has better shooting stats on both offense and defense is tough to pass up.
