CBB VILLANOVA/LOUISVILLE UNDER 142.5 (ESPN2 - Thu., 1/05, 7:00 ET) – Yes both of these teams can score, but they have both played good defense also and we expect that to continue tonight as the team that could make the most stops here will most likely emerge victorious. Louisville is allowing just 60.5 points per game on 39.7% shooting from the floor, while Villanova has been even better permitting only 57.2 points per on 38.2% shooting!

Looking for both clubs to torch the nets tonight as neither plays any semblance of "D", and both clubs turn the ball over a ton. They also both shoot well from the FT line, and 6 of E-DUB's 9 games have gone 'Over' the posted number this year.

NBA HOUSTON ROCKETS +7 (TNT - Thu., 1/05, 8:00 ET) – The Rockets continue to be cash cows on the road this season, as their outright 123-111 win at Washington on Tuesday brings them to a sparkling 13-4, 76.5% ATS away from home. Moreover, they are now an amazing 12-3, 80.0% ATS in this road underdog role! Now the Cavaliers are normally very tough at home, but the Rockets have dominated them even during the LeBron James era as Houston is a perfect 4-0 SU in all the head-to-head meetings between these teams since James arrived on the scene in 2003.

5* MICHIGAN STATE (+6') VS. ILLINOIS BEST 9:00 ET

I seriously took a hard double take at the lines when I saw this number for the first time, and I'm still having a hard time figuring out how the Illini are laying this much chalk in this spot. The Illini have done a fantastic job of blending in their new guys and staying unbeaten to open up their 2005 campaign, but I truly believe their going to suffer a number of losses in their upcoming Big 10 schedule and it all starts tonight. The Spartans have played a ruthless schedule to date, and will be more than ready to take on the Illini and the Orange Crush this evening. The toughest opponents Illinois has faced has been a very young UNC team in an enormous revenge spot, and a G'Town squad that had played a number of games in a short span before visiting Champagne. In other words, Illinois' faced nobody, and Sparty is by far their toughest opponent to date. MSU matches up very well with Illinois at both ends of the court, and their offensive attack will be too much for HC Weber and his men to overcome. MSU got beat up badly by these guys twice last season, and come into tonight's match-up losing 4 of the L/5. The tables are turned in this spot though, and the senior laden Spartans will pull off a wire to wire job and end the Illini's home winning streak.

CBB UCLA/ARIZONA UNDER 138.5 (FSN - Thu., 1/05, 10:30 ET) – Can it be that the Pac-10 is becoming a DEFENSIVE Basketball Conference? The UNDER is now 7-2, 77.8% in all UCLA games that have had a posted total this season, and the average combined total score of all Bruins games has been just 129.7 points! The UNDER is also 6-4, 60.0% in Arizona games as the Wildcat defense is allowing just a stingy 64.3 points per game.

CBB BYU +6.5 GAME OF THE NIGHT (ESPN2 - Thu., 1/05, 11:00 ET) – Air Force is off to a 12-1 start, but its schedule has been littered with a bunch of Division II schools as evidenced by the fact that the Falcons have had just 5 lined games to this point. BYU has gone 8-3 SU vs. a much more competitive slate, and the Cougars have outscored their opponents by an excellent average of +11.2 points per game. BYU has converted on an amazing 48.9% of its field goal attempts this season including 40.0% from beyond the 3-point arc, and we look for the Cougars long-range bombers to take this game down to the wire.

3 Star Selection

***NC Wilmington 74 DELAWARE 59

04:30 PM Pacific - Rotation #529

NC Wilmington is coming off 3 consecutive losses, so the Seahawks will certainly be focused against a much weaker Delaware team tonight. Good teams on a losing streak tend to be good bets as road favorite against bad teams and Wilmington applies to a solid 86-42-3 ATS situation that is based on that premise. Both teams struggle a bit offensively (43% FG for Wilmington, 42% shooting for Delaware), but Wilmington plays very good defense (39.9% FG allowed) while the Blue Hens do not (46.8% FG allowed). My ratings favor Wilmington by 8 points in this game, so the recent slide has provided us with some line value to go along with the good situation. I'll take NC Wilmington in a 3-Star Best Bet at -7 points or less and I'll Downgrade Wilmington to a 2-Star Best Bet if they become a favorite of 7 ½ or 8 points (pass at more than -8).

2 Star Selection

**WISCONSIN (-4 points or less) 70 Iowa 59

05:00 PM Pacific - Rotation #534

What a coaching mismatch this is. Iowa always has good talent under Steve Alford, but the Hawkeyes are just 62-103-5 ATS in all regular season games under Alford, including 27-58-1 ATS in conference games when not getting at least 10 points. Madison is a tough place to play, as the Badgers are 59% ATS in all home games the last 16 years and they are 83-46-1 ATS in that span when not favored by 10 points or more at home. The home court advantage has been even better under coach Bo Ryan, whose teams are 65-3 straight up at home and 41-21-2 ATS, including 20-6 ATS when not laying 10 points or more. Alford is just 1-7 ATS against Wisconsin when not getting double-digits with the only spread win being by just 1 point. My ratings favor Wisconsin by 3 ½ points using a normal home court edge and only including Iowa’s games in which star pointguard Jeff Horner played (he missed 4 games, but returned in the Hawkeyes’ last game). However, the home court edge is much stronger than normal for the Badgers and I’ll lay 4 points or less with Wisconsin in a 2-Star Best Bet. Upgrade Wisconsin to a 3-Star Best Bet if they become a favorite of 3 points or less.

2 Star Selection

**ILLINOIS (-7 points or less) 81 Michigan State 67

06:00 PM Pacific - Rotation #558

Michigan State has historically struggled in conference road games against good teams while Illinois has traditionally raised their level of play when hosting a good team. The Spartans are just 14-28 ATS under coach Izzo in conference road games against teams with a win percentage of .600 or higher if they are not an underdog of 11 points or more (including 4-16 ATS if they are coming off a win of more than 10 points). Illinois, meanwhile, is 92-60-3 ATS in all home games since the 1991/92 season, including 61-31-3 ATS when hosting a team with a win percentage above .600 and 58-28-3 ATS against a team off a win. The Illini are 31-8-3 ATS hosting a better than .600 team that is coming off consecutive wins, including 5-0 ATS under current coach Bruce Weber. Michigan State has gone through the motions against bad teams this year, so I only included their games against good teams when calculating a fair line for this game and that fair line is Illinois by 7 points. I'll lay 7 points or less with Illinois in a 2-Star Best Bet.

Opinion (possible Best Bet)

Utah State (-9) 70 SAN JOSE STATE 55

07:00 PM Pacific - Rotation #565

This is Utah State's first game in their new conference and road favorites have a tendency to focus more than they normally would in their conference opener. In fact, the Aggies apply to a solid 114-65- 2 ATS conference opener road favorite angle. My ratings favor Utah State by only 8 points in this game and the Aggies are 0-2 ATS as a road favorite this season, so I don't want to give up any line value to make this a Best Bet. Utah State is still a solid play, but I will only play Utah State as a 2-Star Best Bet at -8 points or less.

10* on Bradley -1 +102

Bradley is 16-3 ATS after winning 3 of 4 games over the last 3 seasons and 8-1 against ATS after winning 4 of their last 5 games the past 2 seasons. Drake's only chance in this one is if they get extremely hot from 3, but Bradley has been holding opponents to under 30% from beyond the arc this season. Take Bradley!

7* on West Virginia -10 -107

Big System working in this one as well: Road favorites of 10-19.5 pts are 28-7 (80%) ATS since 1997 after allowing 25 pts or fewer in the 1st half of last game vs. an opponent playing a game where both teams score 65 or fewer points.

7* on Michigan St +6.5 -108

Michigan St. has a legitimate chance to end Illinois unbeaten season tonight. The Fighting Illini have been beating most of their opponents with athletic ability, but the Spartans matchup well and may even have more athletes. Tom Izzo has this team conditioned to play hard-nosed defense and he's been preaching transition defense all week. If they can stop the one man fast break on the break they'll put themselves in a good position. I think they cut Illinois fast break points in half. And Michigan St.'s ability to stroke the threee, especially Ager, will be the deciding factor. This one goes down to the wire so I have to take the points!
