Dave Malinsky (hasn't been too bad)
Free Pick For TodaySport: Major League Baseball Picks
Game: San Diego Padres @ Los Angeles Dodgers on May 4, 2006 10:10PM
Prediction: San Diego Padres
Reason: There is no question that timing is among the most important of all issues when it comes to sports handicapping, and the ability to recognize emerging patterns just as they are happening can have you way ahead of the game in the long run. As such, if you have been following along here the last few days you can absolutely anticipate this one. In no way should the Padres be the underdogs in this matchup, and after cashing two tickets in a row with them at plus prices we will do it again here.

That rally from 5-0 down in the 9th on Sunday was not only a huge psychological lift for them, fueling the ensuring win streak, but it was also a crushing blow for the Dodgers, who have lost every game since then. And it is not all about the psyche of the teams either – an under-achieving Padre offense was going to correct itself at some point, and note that last night’s explosion could have been even better, with the bases being left loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Now excellent prospect Clay Hensley gets a second crack at the Dodgers, and this time we can expect to see the offensive support that he did not get on Saturday. Hensley held Los Angeles to just three hits in seven innings in that outing, but one of those hits was a two-run homer by Nomar Garciaparra, and that was enough to send him home the loser. Not tonight, however, and not only has Hensley shown plenty of promise, but we also get a huge edge coming from the bullpen mismatch in the late innings.

Just fantastic line value to get the streaking Padres as the underdogs against a reeling opponent in this one.

Matt Fargo
Free Pick For TodaySport: Major League Baseball Picks
Game: Toronto Blue Jays @ Boston Red Sox on May 4, 2006 7:05PM
Prediction: over
Reason: Matt Clement has had all sorts of problems against Toronto in his six starts since coming over to Boston. He has allowed 31 runs in 32 innings including 19 runs in 14.2 innings covering three starts at home. He did allow only two earned runs last time out this season against the Blue Jays but he lasted only 5.1 innings, giving him an ERA of 6.14 on the season. Toronto gets to him this time as the offense will explode for more that it did in that previous start from Clement.

Josh Towers has been having trouble getting people out and he has allowed at least four earned runs in each of his five starts on the season. He has an ERA of 10.45 on the season with the opposition averaging 9.4 rpg in those five outings. The Red Sox are not the team he needs to be facing to try and get his game in gear. He is 3-5 with a 6.62 ERA in seven career starts and relief appearances against Boston but the recent numbers are even worse with Toronto going 0-5 in his last five starts. Play Over Toronto Blue Jays/Boston Red Sox One Unit

Pat Miller

Free Pick For TodaySport: Major League Baseball Picks
Game: Angels (RL) @ Tigers (RL) on May 4, 2006 1:05PM
Prediction: Angels (RL)
Reason: The Tigers managed to sneak by with a 2-1 victory in the opener of this two-game series on Wednesday. Look for another tightly contested ball game on Thursday afternoon as the Angels look to put an end to their six-game losing streak.

Los Angeles will give Kevin Gregg a shot in the rotation, as Kelvim Escobar continues to recover from injury. Gregg has appeared in long relief in three games this season, and has pitched quite well. In 10 2/3 innings of work, he has allowed just one earned run, and owns a healthy 3.67 K/BB ratio. One of those three appearances came against these same Detroit Tigers. He tossed three scoreless innings in that game, and owns a 2.30 ERA in eight career appearances against Detroit.

Tigers starter Justin Verlander has been a pleasant surprise in the early going, posting a 3-2 record with a 3.52 ERA. There's no doubt he has benefited from plenty of run support along the way. In his three victories, Detroit has put 31 runs on the board. That may not be the case on Thursday, which is why we hesitate to pay the hefty price with the young righty. After tearing it up over the weekend, the Tigers have managed to score just nine runs in their last three games.

The Angels warrant a play at this price. We'll grab the extra run for insurance as a one run margin is likely in this contest. Take Los Angeles +1.5.
