Five Things You Need to Know in Sports

Want to start your sports day off right? Looking for some action and the most exciting matchups of the day? There are is an NFL and a college football game tonight and two key baseball games with playoff implications on tap. Here is a brief look at the top four important matchups of the day along with future odds.

1)NY Giants at Carolina, from Bank of America Stadium (NFL Network)

Are the Panthers for real? Both teams are 1-1 after last week. The Giants outscored Tampa Bay last week, 41-34, while the Panthers beat New Orleans, 35-27 as a home dog. Cam Newton wants more balance, while Eli Manning will be throwing it all over the field with Ahmad Bradshaw out. Carolina is 7-0 OVER last 7 after allowing more than 350 total yards in their previous game. Carolina is a 1-point favorite with a total of 50.5.

2)BYU at Boise State, Bronco Stadium, (ESPN)

This is the first game between these teams since 2004. Boise State is looking for their 19th straight September win. They are coming off a 39-12 home win over Miami-Ohio after starting the season with 17-13 road loss to Michigan State on Aug 31. Senior D.J. Harper ran for 162 yards and scored four times for the Broncos. That game was the first as an unranked team since Sept. 20, 2008. Boise State is 9-0 ATS last 9 as a home fave of 3.5 to 10. Boise State is a 6.5-point favorite with a total of 49.

3)Boston at Tampa Bay, Clay Buccholz (11-6, 4.33 ERA) vs. David Price (18-5, 2.54 ERA)

If the Rays can't win with David Price on the mound, they might as well kiss off the playoffs. Price hasn't been healthy as of late and his numbers show it, posting a 5.09 ERA in his last three starts. Buccholz has been a lot better as of late and Boston may actually be trying with a younger team. Boston is 2-7 Under last 9 on grass. The Rays opened as a -200 favorite with a total of 8.

4)Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, Mike Fiers (9-8, 3.23 ERA) vs. Wandy Rodriguez (11-13, 3.65 ERA)

This should be a pretty good afternoon pitching matchup for two teams still fighting for the NL wild card. Despite having a poor road record, Milwaukee is the favorite here because they are playing well. Ryan Braun is having another big year and if they can get some pitching down the stretch, they can catch the Cardinals. Milwaukee is 8-1 OVER last 9 road games. Milwaukee opened as a -125 favorite with a total of 7.5.
