John Fina's Free College Basketball Selection
February 28, 2006

Selection: St. Joseph's +6 (-110)

Reason: Put us down on St. Joseph's +6 for our Free College Basketball Selection on Tuesday. St. Joseph's will be on the road today as they take on Xavier. We will gladly take St. Joseph's plus the points. Let me explain why... We understand that Xavier is a slightly better overall team, however, they are not 6 points better. These teams played each other on 1/4/06 at St. Joseph's where Xavier was lucky to get a win. This adds to our value with St. Joseph's today as it sets up a revenge situation for St. Joseph's. Better yet, it's a fact that Xavier does not play well against teams revenging against them. With that said, Xavier is a terrible 5-13 against the spread when coming off a win against a conference rival. Put it this way... St. Joseph's has the talent to keep this game within reach. Grab all the points you can get! Take St. Joseph's!

TIP OF THE DAY
College Basketball
Missouri @ Iowa State on Feb 28 2006 8:00PM

Prediction: Iowa State
Current Line: -11 -112
Over/Under: 145.5 -116

Reason: The Missouri Tigers appear to have already called it quits on
the season and as a result have been the ultimate fade for the past five
weeks. Until they indicate otherwise, we'll go against them.

Iowa State has dropped five of their last six games overall, including
an embarassing 91-73 loss at Baylor on Saturday. This is an excellent
bounce back spot for a Cyclones team that has won two of their last
three on their home floor, by margins of 16 and 17 points. They have
already dominated Missouri once this season, winning the first meeting
82-58, on the road no less. The outcome won't be much different on
Tuesday night.

Missouri is now 2-8 ATS on the road this season. To find the last time
they covered a spread away from home, you have to go all the way back to
January 10th. Simply put, this is a team that is having no success at
either end of the floor. They are averaging just 59 ppg on 40% shooting,
while allowing opponents to shoot over 50% over their last five games.
Each of their last six road defeats have come by double digits.

Iowa State is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings in this series. We'll
stick with that trend on Tuesday night. Take Iowa State.

Vegas Experts
Cleveland State Vikings at Detroit Titans
Tuesday, February 28, 7:00 P.M. EST

Detroit is 5-2 over its last seven games though just 3-4 ATS. Cleveland State has lost eight of its last 10, covering four. It lost here to Detroit February 2 84-73 as a 7.5-point dog. Cleveland State was playing better then and Detroit worse but the Vikings take only a half-point more on the line in this one at the opener than they did in February. Detroit got inside and got to the line in that February match and figures to do the same here. CLEVELAND ST is 5-14 ATS revenging a same season loss vs opponent over the last 3 seasons and 4-14 ATS off a home loss against a conference rival over the last 3 seasons while DETROIT is 13-4 ATS after failing to cover 4 or 5 of their last 6 against the spread since 1997.

Play on: Detroit

Cleveland State vs. Detroit [2006-02-28]
Take Detroit Titans
Reason: Certainly we like playing the hot teams down the stretch, and Detroit absolutely qualifies, winning 4 of their final 5 including the buzzer beater against Butler. Meanwhile, Cleveland State is the mirror opposite, losing 8 of their final 10 and can't have much confidence entering the Horizon League Tournament where they hold an all time 3-10 ledger.

The important thing to remember here is that the home team in this series is a perfect 6-0 SU & ATS L6. That's huge in a conference tournament which is played on the home courts of the lower seeds.

In this case, Detroit is a stellar 12-1 on this floor while Cleveland State has struggled to a meagher 4-7 record away from home.

It certainly doesn't hurt that the Titans have owned this series, taking the cash in 8 of the previous 10 meetings, inlcuding an 11 point victory in the last meeting, here on this very floor.

Detroit 69, Cleveland State 58. Take Detroit
