Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews returned to practice Monday for the first time since breaking his clavicle Aug. 9 on his first carry of the preseason. Matthews has not been cleared for contact is doubtful for the Chargers’ season opener against the Raiders next Monday.

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Monday starting pitcher Chris Carpenter could contribute to the club this year. Carpenter will throw a simulated game Tuesday after undergoing surgery in July to improve thoracic outlet syndrome symptoms. The 2005 Cy Young Award winner hasn’t pitched since Game 7 of the 2011 World Series.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia revealed Monday to reporters that staff ace Jered Weaver’s shoulder is “a little tender” and he may miss his next scheduled start Friday against the Tigers.
