Five Things You Need to Know in Sports

Want to start your sports day off right? Looking for some action and the most exciting matchups of the day? There are four key baseball games with playoff implications on tap. Here is a brief look at the top four important matchups of the day along with future odds.

1)Washington at Philadelphia, John Lannan (3-0, 4.43 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (15-6, 3.05ERA)

The Phillies still have some life sitting at 5 games behind St. Louis for the final wild card spot, but after losing two straight, with 9 games left, their chances are very slim. Washington is trying to hold on to the NL East lead, which now sits at 5 games after the Nats 12-2 win over Milwaukee on Monday afternoon. Philly is 6-1 last 7 in this series. The Phillies opened up as a -150 favorite with a total of 7.5.

2)Miami at Atlanta, Nate Eovaldi (4-12, 4.36 ERA) vs. Kris Medlen (9-1, 1.51 ERA)

Is there a better pitcher in baseball right now than Kris Medlin? The Braves still have a chance at the NL East thanks to Medlen. In his last start on Sept. 19 against the Marlins, he allowed just four hits and no runs on the road in a 3-0 win for the Braves. Eovaldi will need to pitch lights out for the Marlins to have a shot. Atlanta is 22-8 last 30 in series. Atlanta opened as a -250 favorite with a total of 7.5.

3)Milwaukee at Cincinnati, Mike Fiers (9-8, 3.38 ERA) vs. Johnny Cueto (18-9, 2.84ERA)

The Brewers are just 3 games behind the final wild card spot and they are now tied with the LA Dodgers at 79-74 after falling at the Nationals on Monday afternoon. They do take on a Cincy team that wrapped up the NL Central, but a potential Cy Young award winner in Cueto. Cincinnati is 3-8-1 in Cueto's last 12 starts vs. Milwaukee. Cincinnati opened as a -140 favorite with a total of 8.

4)Oakland at Texas, Tom Milone (13-10, 3.86 ERA) vs. Yu Darvish (16-9, 3.90 ERA)

This is the second game of a four-game series. Tom Milone takes the mound for the Athletics against Yu Darvish for the Rangers. Texas gets OF Josh Hamilton back from an illness. The Rangers are looking to wrap the AL West up, while Oakland needs to stay in the wild card race. Texas is 6-0 Over last 6 home games vs. a left-handed starter. Texas opened as a -210 favorite with a total of 8. 5
