Today the National Sports Advisors look for #6 seed Texas to spring the upset over #3 seed Mississippi State in terms of NCAA seedings, but not in terms of how vegas linesmakers have put out this game's line.
Texas enters today's game with an overall record of 21-11, including wins in five of their last six games. The Longhorns have played arguably the toughest schedule in the nation, and have done so with a relatively young team. How tough was their schedule? Well, 8 of their last 9 games have come against NCAA Tournament teams, and 17 of their 32 games overall have come against NCAA tournament teams. The Longhorns are battle tested, and they have the advantage of playing in front of a pro-Longhorn crowd today in Dallas. The Longhorns made it to today's second round matchup with a dominating 70-57 first round win over #11 seed Boston College.
Mississippi State enters today's matchup with an overall record of 27-7, and in the midst of a 9 game winning streak. The Bulldogs may be the higher NCAA seed, but they enter today's game as a +1 underdog largely due to the fact that Texas is playing in front a large Texas Longhorn crowd. If you consider this to be a Texas homegame of sorts, one must consider that Mississippi State was just 1-3 versus NCAA Tournament teams on the road, with the lone win coming against Illinois-Chicago. Their three road losses versus NCAA teams included a 34 point loss at Cincinnatti, a 28 point loss at Florida, and a 7 point loss at Mississippi.
So why TEXAS? Well, count us in as subscribers to the theory that this is essentially a home game for Texas. Certainly it is not as much as an advantage as it would be if it was on-campus in Austin, but it still is an advantage. That's precisely why vegas linesmakers have made Texas a small favorite. Texas looked great in their first round matchup with BC, while it took Mississippi State a little while to get going against McNeese State. A extended 8-10 minute stretch of subpar basketball by Mississippi State probably won't allow the Bulldogs to get it done today. They need to bring their "A" game if they want to escape Longhorn country with an invitation to the Sweet 16. We just feel that the Longhorns are as talented as the Bulldogs, and we love the guard play that Texas brings to the table behind sensational freshman PG TJ Ford. The Longhorns will be able to hold their own on the glass against Mississippi State, and the edge could be the home court "feel" to this game for Texas. Lay the point and look for Texas to pull this one in the heart of Texas.
