YTD: 3-2 +0.8 units. Winner last night on the Washington/Portland Under.

8/3 plays

Play: REDSKINS to -3, -110

Reason: When handicapping the NFL pre-season, rule #1 is to forget about stats. The pre-season is all about subjectives. This particular contest matches two teams that have completely different mind sets going into tonights game. The Redskins are headed by NFL rookie coach Steve Spurrier, who really would like to get win #1 under his belt. The Redksins are unsettled at QB, and on the offensive line. The plan for tonight is to start Sage Rosenfels in the first half and Danny Wuerfell in the second half. You can expect a lot of passing out of the Washington offense, as they are set at running back with Stephen Davis. The 49ers enter this contest with the complete opposite mindset of Washington. The 49ers are returning 20 of 22 starters from last years 11-5 team, and are pretty set at all of their key positions. Starting center Jeremy Newberry did not make the trip, and you better believe that is a big deal. We'd be surprised if Jeff Garcia plays more than two series, before handing the reigns over to thrird year man Tim Rattay. The 49ers want to give Rattay extended minutes at QB, in order to determine if he is the man they want backing up Garcia. With a rookie center snapping him the ball, Rattay better be on his toes. Check these quotes from the past week: "We're going to look at our second group alot, and it will probably be against their first unit" - 49ers coach Steve Mariucci "We're going to try and win the game"- Steve Spurrier Bottom line: The Redskins want this thing more than the 49ers, they have more to work on and more to prove. Good Luck.
