BIG AL's 5*
At 8:35pm our 5* MLB Total of the Year is on the San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies 'under' the total. The San Diego Padres will be the longest shot in the postseason and if they want to have better than an ice cube's chance in hell, they're going to need a healthy Jake Peavy. Peavy is the Padres' righthanded ace and one of the best pitchers in baseball, but since the start of this season, he has been struck with a rash of injuries, including a bacterial infection, a ball that struck his hand, and a cut finger suffered while taking out the trash. Despite all the injuries this season, Peavy has put up fantastic numbers at 12 - 7 with an ERA under three runs, and at night, his ERA is an even better 2.65 with a super 0.99 WHIP. Colorado goes with first time righthanded starter Mike Esposito, who was called up to replace an injured Zach Day. Esposito's numbers were solid in 2004 for Tulsa (10-6 with a 3.33 ERA), and then this year he pitched in Colorado Springs (a hitters' haven), and of course had a misleading 5.49 ERA due to the thin air of Colorado. Prior to Tuesday night's fireworks show by the Rockies, in the last nine games between these two, seven have gone a total of eleven or fewer runs. Six of Peavy's last seven starts have gone 'under' the total, and Colorado will have a big letdown after scoring 20 runs on 23 hits last night.
