1-0 last night

Miami Heat at Golden State Warriors

Wednesday, January 11, 10:35 P.M. EST

Look for plenty of guard play, plenty of penetration and plenty of free throws in this one which will turn it into a high scoring affair. Miami is 45-25 OVER as a favorite of 3.5 to 9.5 points over the last 2 seasons and 24-13 OVER after a game where they covered the spread over the last 2 seasons. GOLDEN STATE is 12-2 OVER when the total is greater than or equal to 200 this season.

Marquette at Seton Hall (-1.5, play to -2.5) - 4:30pm Pacific - Game #557-558

I've been impressed by not only the talent level but the heart and determination that Seton Hall has shown this past week. They rallied from a 20 point second half deficit to force OT and defeat St. John's two games back. In last game they battled hard for 40 minutes in 4 point loss at Rutgers. The "RAC" is one of the more difficult venues in the country to play at and Seton Hall had scores of unfavorable calls go against them. The play of senior point guard Donald Copeland has been a huge surprise for the Pirates this year. The position was somewhat of a concern before the season, but Copeland has stepped up and is playing superbly. He has averaged 17.5ppg and 4.1apg in his last 11 games and had already surpassed his steal total from all of last year. Senior forward Kelly Whitney is on a career best three game tear that has seen him average 24.6ppg. He can be a force inside when his mind is on basketball and that appears to very much be the case right now. Athletic guards junior Jamar Nutter and sophomore Brian Laing give SHU plenty of perimeter firepower. Junior forward Stan Gaines (Minnesota transfer) and much improved sophomore center Marcus Cousin support Whitney in the frountcourt. Junior center Grant Billmeier is another usable big body off the bench. Sparkplug freshman guard Paul Gause left last game with a sprained ankle but is expected to be fine tonight.

Marquette has only played two true road games this year and lost them both by double digits. This is a very young team with only three returning regulars playing significant roles. Two freshman start in the backcourt and currently rank second and third on the team in scoring. A third freshman, wing Wesley Matthews, has missed the last two games and is out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his foot. Matthews is 4th on the team in scoring, 3rd in rebounding, 2nd in assists, and 2nd in steals. He will be missed. Marquette leading scorer Steve Novak is shooting 52.1% at home but just 10-27 (37%) in the two road losses. Marquette's big upset of #2 UConn two games back is why this line is so low. UConn played that night for the first time with point guard Marcus Williams (previously suspended) and may have been out of sync. The Huskies repeatedly made mental mistakes and Marquette's home crowd was a huge factor in the outcome. Marquette was unable to solidify the performance, losing their next game vs Cincinnati.

Seton Hall is 9-1 at home, while Marquette is 0-2 on the road. The Golden Eagles have historically had trouble winning on the road. Even with standout point guard Travis Diener running the show they still managed just a 7-13 road record over the past two seasons. With their youth the road woes figure to continue if not worsen this year. This is a key game on Seton Hall's schedule and I expect them to come away with a win tonight. Take the home team.

The Tigers' small-ball attack will give the Tide problems. Auburn will be quicker at most positions and the Tide doesn't have the personnel and depth to adjust. The Tigers have shot the three well and the Tide's zone defense has been mediocre at best this year and it just gives up too many good looks at the three. Beard -Eaves Arena will be packed and the Tide's in disarray. HC Gottfried hasn't shown the ability to come up with answers and now he has lost his go to guy (Davis). The Tigers will rain 3's and will not let up. This puppy will be over by the half, so sit back and enjoy the undervalued Tigers and lay the paltry bucket. The Tigers have been very good to us this season, and I've been a huge believer and follower of what HC Jeff Lebo has done in his career. He's turning things around at Auburn, and a huge win over the hated Tide will have his men believing in themselves for bigger and better wins down the road.

MICHIGAN STATE over Indiana by 20

In the third of three straight revenge games for Michigan

State, expect the Spartans to hit their home floor with vigor.

Tom Izzo always has his team ready to play in this situation.

In his last 27 revenge games at home, Izzo is 24-3 SU,

including 15-6 ATS when not favored by more than ten

points. Fortunately, for Izzo and the Spartans, they catch

Indiana in its worst role. The Hoosiers are 1-18 SU and 4-15

ATS in their last 19 games on the road against .625 or better

opposition and that includes 2-15 ATS when Indiana was

favored or was an underdog of less than +16. The Spartans

match up well with Indiana. Paul Davis is one of the few

players in the league who can negate Marco Killingsworth

and the Hoosiers can't match the firepower of Michigan

State's trio of sharpshooting guards. Oh yeah, MSU has a

huge coaching advantage with Izzo against Mike Davis.

Remember, IU lost at Indiana State.

N IOWA over Creighton by 14

The Panthers took two bitter one-point losses from Creighton last

season and have the horses (all five starters back from last year's

21-win squad) to get even convincingly tonight. Creighton has been

treated rather rudely so far on the MVC road (already lost at Illinois

State and Bradley, neither of which is as good as the Panthers)

and has a horrible stigma attached here. The Blue Jays have failed

to cover 28 straight times in SU losses to avenging teams and

Northern Iowa has won 30 of its last 33 home games. This one

didn't take much thinking.

LOYOLA CHI over Wisconsin Milw by 7

Since the origination of the Horizon League, this may be the first

year that Loyola has the same level of talent that Milwaukee does.

The Ramblers are pretty good, folks, at least for this level of

competition. We know for a fact that this game has been circled

in red on the Loyola calendar since last March. After eight straight

losses, the Ramblers are tired of losing to this team. We know that

few Horizon opponents come into this city and leave with a win

but, in the spacious US Cellular Arena, the Panthers don't have

that same intimidating crowd that they had in the cozy Klotsche

Center. The strength of this NCAA tourney team last year was the

play of super swingman Ed McCants and the coaching wizardry of

Bruce Pearl. McCants has graduated, Pearl is coaching at Tennessee

and Loyola is still champing at the bit to get even. We respect the

fact that the Panthers are probably the best team in the loop but

Loyola is close. Real close. We'll see that here tonight.

Lakers vs. Portland

10:00 EST

Have to ride the Kobe bandwagon. Bryant has scored 45, 50, 48, and 45 points in his last four games. It shouldn’t take that kind of production for the Lakers to easily beat a pathetic Portland team tonight. The Blazers have lost six straight going 0-5 ATS recently. Included in this skid is some memorable beats by 29 to Miami at home, by 31 at San Antonio, and by double digits against New Orleans and Dallas. Portland is among the worst passing teams in the league (team assists) and the Lakers are 8-0 ATS on the road this year against opposition that average less than 20 assists per game. Portland is minus two starters at the moment without Darius Miles and Theo Ratliffe, who missed their last game and has been plagued by a foot injury. The Lakers are 10-2 ATS this year on the road when coming off a cover. Take LA.
