5 Things You Need to Know in Sports
Want to start your day off right? Looking for the most interesting events of the day and a few games to lay action on? There is a full schedule in baseball tonight as football goes later this week. Here is a brief look at the top four important matchups of the day along with a glance at future odds.
1)NY Yankees at Boston, David Phelps (3-4, 3.55 ERA ) vs. Aaron Cook (3-9, 5.17ERA)
This is not exactly a matchup of Cy Young Award-winners. Aaron Cook hit the wall and can't climb over. He is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in his last three starts. David Phelps has had a decent year but is pitching even worse than Cook as of late, posting a 7.20 ERA in his last three starts. On July 27 in the Bronx, Cook allowed 6 runs in 4 innings, including two home runs. NY Yankees are 11-5 L16 in series. NY Yankees opened as a -150 favorite with a total of 10.
2)Tampa Bay at Baltimore, Alex Cobb (9-8, 4.28 ERA) vs. Miguel Gonzalez (6-4, 3.62 ERA)
The key series of the night between two teams battling for the wild card spot and even the AL East title. Cobb is a weak link in the Rays' rotation while Gonzalez has been a pleasant surprise. Baltimore needs a lift from OF Nate McClouth, who has to lead-off now that Nick Markakis is out for the regular season with an injury. Baltimore is 2-7 UNDER last 9 in series at home. Baltimore opened as a -110 favorite with a total of 8.5.
3)Miami at Philadelphia, Josh Johnson (8-11, 3.81 ERA) vs. Cliff Lee (4-7, 3.50 ERA)
Here is an excellent pitching matchup between two aces, who are not having great seasons. Cliff Lee is having one of the hardest-luck seasons in recent memory but he did beat Atlanta two starts ago . In his last start against Colorado, he allowed just 2 runs in 6 1/3 IP and got another no-decision. Philadelphia has crept back up to close to .500 and are not completely out of it. Philadelphia is 16-5-1 Over last 22 Wednesday games. The Phillies opened as a -155 favorite with a total of 7.
4)Washington at NY Mets, John Lannan (2-0, 3.46 ERA) vs. Matt Harvey (3-4, 3.04 ERA)
This should have been Stephen Strasburg's last start. But the team shut him down after a poor start last Friday against the Marlins. John Lannan is a veteran lefty who takes his place. Think there is some pressure on Lannan and the organization in this game? He takes on a pretty good pitcher in Matt Harvey. Washington is 10-1 L11 on the road in this series. Washington opened as a -110 favorite with a total of 8.
