Five Things You Need to Know for Oct. 10

Want to start your sports day off right? Looking for some action and the most exciting matchups of the day? There are two baseball playoffs games and two if necessary. Here is a brief look at the top four important matchups of the day along with future odds.

1)Baltimore at NY Yankees, Game 3, ALDS Miguel Gonzalez (9-4, 3.25 ERA) vs. Hiroki Kuroda (16-11, 3.32 ERA)

This is the third game of the American League Division Series. Baltimore won on Monday, 3-2 to tied the best-of-five-series at 1-1. Miguel Gonazlez was impressive on the road in his first major league campaign, going 6-2 with a 2.74 ERA in 11 games - including two relief appearances. Kuroda split his two starts against the Orioles, both of which were at Yankee Stadium. Baltimore is 5-1 in their last 6 games as a road underdog. Yankees opened as a -180 favorite over the Orioles with a total of 8.5

2)St. Louis at Washington, Game 3, NLDS, Chris Carpenter (0-2, 3.71 ERA) vs. Edwin Jackson (10-11, 4.03 ERA)

This is the third game of the National League Division Series. St. Louis exploded on Monday to win 12-4, to even the series at 1-1. The Washington Nationals are about to host the city’s first playoff game since 1933. The Cardinals are led by the red-hot Carlos Beltran. Beltran homered twice in Game 2, boosting his career postseason slugging percentage to higher than .800. Edwin Jackson was with the Cardinals last October and made four postseason starts. Washington is 8-1 last 9 at home in series. Washington opened as a -110 favorite with a total of 7.5.

3)San Francisco at Cincinnati, Game 4, NLDS, Great American Ball Park

At press time, there were no pitching matchups available. If the Giants win Game 3, they still have to somehow take all three in Cincinnati. That would be a tough task but they do have one of the best pitching staffs in the game. They just aren't as complete as the Reds. San Francisco is 7-2 OVER last 9 on Wednesday.

4)Detroit at Oakland, Max Scherzer (16-7, 3.74 ERA) vs. A. J. Griffin (7-1, 3.06 ERA)

If Oakland can make it to Game 4, they'll have another one of their top young pitchers on the mound in Griffin. Scherzer could go with Detroit, who would likely save Justin Verlander for Game 5, if it gets to that point. Oakland has overachieved this year but their bullpen finally let down in Game 2, to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead (before Game 3). Oakland is 13-4 last 17 Wednesday games.

5)Odds to win the BCS National Championship

The Alabama Crimson Tide remain the favorite to win the BCS National Championship. Oregon is second and West Virginia is third, while Florida has now vaulted to fourth.
