AFC AND NFC CHAMPIONS CROWNED AS PLAYOFF FEVER CONTINUES ON XBOX.COM
January 17, 2003—Today, Microsoft announced the results the AFC and NFC Championship games as part of Playoff Fever on Xbox.com. Playoff Fever is a simulated game summary (posted every Friday on www.xbox.com) that previews the upcoming NFL Playoff games. All games are played in incredibly realistic replicas of NFL stadiums, using Microsoft Game Studios' NFL Fever 2003 for Xbox.
Last week's Divisional Playoff Weekend was a rough one for Playoff Fever. The simulation suffered a 1–3 record in predicting who would advance to this week's AFC and NFC Championship games. Fever missed on its picks of San Francisco over Tampa Bay and New York over Oakland and nearly pulled out a win with Pittsburgh over Tennessee. However, Fever made good on its prediction that the Philadelphia Eagles would end Atlanta's run to the Super Bowl.
After an entire Monday Night season and two weeks of Playoff action, Fever's record stands at an impressive 17–8. Dating back to last season, Fever holds an overall record of 34–15. In addition, NFL Fever 2003 has picked a winner in 16 of its last 22 game simulations.
This week, Fever featured the following AFC and NFC Championship games.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Philadelphia Eagles
Tampa Bay and the Philadelphia Eagles squared off in the last-ever football game at Veterans Stadium. Tampa drew first blood with a 52-yard strike, but Philadelphia answered with a seven-minute drive, culminating with a four-yard touchdown, knotting the score at 7–7. In the second quarter, Tampa kicked two long field goals of 42 and 46 yards, giving the Buccaneers a surprising 13–7 halftime lead. Then, Tampa kicked another field goal late in the third quarter, seemingly putting the Eagles on ice, 16–7. But, Philly wouldn't let their Super Bowl dreams die. With plenty of time left, Philadelphia had a pass-happy fourth quarter that set the tempo for the rest of the game and resulted in a 20-yard touchdown, bringing the Eagles within a field goal, 16–14. In the final quarter, with "The Vet" in an uproar, the Eagles' offense took over on their own 13-yard line and scored a 40-yard, game-winning touchdown with no time remaining.
Donovan McNabb received Player of the Game honors, finishing 19 of 23 passing for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
The win placed the Eagles in the Super Bowl for the first time since 1981, when the Eagles lost to the Oakland Raiders 27–10 in Super Bowl XV.
Tennessee Titans at Oakland Raiders
"The Black Hole" proved to be quite a home-field advantage for the Raiders. Oakland began the game with a stellar opening drive, capped off by a 12-yard touchdown run, giving the Raiders a quick lead of 7–0. A 35-yard field goal in the second quarter put Oakland up by 10, before Tennessee finally got on the board and cut the lead to 10–3. But, just before the half, the Raiders nailed a 39-yard field goal to rebuild Oakland's lead to 13–3. The defenses took over in the third quarter, forcing each other to punt on every possession. Both teams combined for only four first downs. Then, business picked up for both offenses in the fourth quarter. Tennessee forced a fumble during a lengthy Raiders drive, giving the Titans new life. Shortly thereafter, a 63-yard touchdown pass brought Tennessee within a field goal, 13–10. But, Oakland refused to let Tennessee breathe, and the Raiders put the game out of reach on a 6-yard connection in the end zone. With a score of 20–10, the Raiders advanced to their first Super Bowl since 1984.
Rich Gannon was named Player of the Game, finishing the day with 16 of 19 for 199 yards, one touchdown passing, four carries for 34 yards, and one touchdown rushing. Oakland's victory sets up a Super Bowl XV rematch in San Diego next week.

Yea, they do. It's not really a predictor though. It's two nerds that lock themselves in a room and play the game to the end.
