The 2010 NHL Playoffs get started on Wednesday and the Eastern Conference has plenty of star power, but what team will emerge as the conference champion?

The field of eight teams is highlighted by the season points champion, the Washington Capitals. The Capitals are the early favorite to win the conference title.
Oddsmakers from online sports book BroburySports.com have given Washington 1/1 odds to win the Eastern Conference. Other short odds to win are Pittsburgh (5/2), New Jersey (4/1), and Buffalo (5/1).
The Capitals scored 121 points on the year as they racked up 54 wins. The Capitals scored 318 goals on the season and allowed 233. Washington has never won the Stanley Cup and hasn’t played in the Stanley Cup Finals since 1998. The Capitals will be the No. 1 seed in the East and they will host the Montreal Canadiens in the opening round.
Pittsburgh is the defending Stanley Cup champion and they have won the last two Eastern Conference titles and won four titles in franchise history while winning three Stanley Cups in franchise history. The Penguins are the No. 4 seed in the East and they will face the Ottawa Senators in the opening round. Pittsburgh scored 101 points on the year with 257 goals while giving up 237.
New Jersey is the No. 2 seed in the East after scoring 103 points on the year. The Devils poured in 222 goals while allowing 191. New Jersey has won four conference titles and three Stanley Cup titles in franchise history. The Devils will face the Philadelphia Flyers in the opening round.
Buffalo enters the conference playoffs as the No. 3 seed. The Sabres scored 100 points on the season and racked up 235 goals while allowing 207. Buffalo has won three conference titles in franchise history, the last of which came in 1999. Buffalo has never won the Stanley Cup title. The Sabres will face the Boston Bruins in the opening round of the playoffs.
