2010 Winter Olympics Gold Medal Hockey Game Odds: USA vs. Canada
The hockey teams for Canada and USA will go for the 2010 Winter Olympic gold medal on Sunday, February 28th and oddsmakers have made the Canadians the opening favorites.
On Friday, USA knocked off Finland 6-1 in the semi-finals round of the hockey tournament. The Americans scored all six of their goals in the first period and then essentially played defense the rest of the way as Finland was helpless offensively.
Canada had a tougher go of things in the semi-finals, edging Slovakia 3-2 after jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the first two periods. Slovakia made things interesting in the third period by scoring two goals to cut the Canadians’ lead to 3-2, but it was too little, too late.
The United States is the only unbeaten team in this year’s tournament, having outscored opponents 22-6 in five straight victories. It’s the longest an American team has gone without a loss or tie in an Olympic tournament since 1960.
Yet despite these facts, the Americans find themselves a heavy underdog on Sunday. Oddsmakers from online sports book BroburySports.com have made Canada a –210 money line favorite, while USA is +175. The over/under total for Sunday’s game has been set at 5.5.
At the start of the tournament, Canada was a heavy favorite to win the gold medal at ½ odds. USA was 6/1, which ranked them behind both Canada and Russia (2/1). Canada was also a 1/5 favorite to win Group A, while USA was a 2/1 underdog to win in Group A.
The last time these two teams met, USA pulled off a surprising upset by knocking off Canada 5-3 on February 21. The Gold Medal Game will be played tomorrow, Sunday, February 28 at 3:15PM ET.
