Tuesday NHL Gameday

The battle of New York takes center stage on Tuesday night, with the Rangers playing host to the Islanders at Madison Square Garden. Here's a look in your NHL Gameday:

New York Islanders at New York Rangers

The Islanders have lost four of their past five games, and they've had trouble putting the puck in the net over that span. New York fell 4-1 to the Flyers on Saturday, and they followed that up with a 1-0 loss to the Panthers on Sunday. Wade Dubielewicz filled in for Rick DiPietro on Sunday; the Isles' starting keeper was absent for personal reasons.

The Rangers moved up the Eastern Conference standings with a 5-4 win over the Flyers on Sunday afternoon. Brendan Shanahan scored the shootout winner for New York in that game, while Stephen Valiquette stopped 17 of 18 Philly shots after replacing an ineffective Henrik Lundqvist. The Rangers are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games.

Buffalo Sabres at Philadelphia Flyers

Buffalo was all over the Predators 8-4 last Wednesday, but since then they've dropped back-to-back decisions to the Canadiens and Red Wings. Montreal knocked off their division rival 6-2 on Friday, while Detroit was good for a 4-2 victory on Sunday. Ryan Miller had 35 saves in the loss on Sunday, and Jason Pominville scored his 20th goal.

The Flyers had their three-game winning streak snapped with their loss to the Rangers on Sunday afternoon. Philadelphia had knocked off the Sabres, Senators, and Islanders in their previous three games. Jeff Carter had two goals for Philadelphia in their loss on Sunday, while Antero Niittymaki was yanked after allowing four goals on just 14 shots.

Chicago Blackhawks at Minnesota Wild

The Blackhawks are coming off a 4-1 win over the Canucks on Sunday night, with leading Calder Trophy candidate Patrick Kane scoring twice and adding an assist in the contest. Chicago had been pounded 7-4 by the Stars in their previous game, but overall they have won four of their past six outings. The Hawks will meet Anaheim Wednesday.

The Wild continue to hold down top spot in the Northwest Division standings, and they picked up their third straight win by beating the Kings 2-1 on Sunday night. Marian Gaborik scored his 34th goal of the season for Minnesota in that victory, while Martin Skoula had the overtime winner. Niklas Backstrom had 27 saves in Sunday's contest.

Vancouver Canucks at Colorado Avalanche

The Canucks have now lost their last three games in a row, although two of those results were overtime losses that at least allowed them to pick up some points in the tight Western Conference standings. Ryan Kesler had the lone Vancouver goal in their loss to Chicago on Sunday, and the Canucks managed only 10 shots in that contest.

Colorado has now won four of their past five games to get back into the Top 8 of the Western Conference standings. The Avalanche handily defeated the lowly Kings 5-2 on Saturday, but forwards Ryan Smyth and Marek Svatos both left the game with injuries. Colorado is also waiting for the debut of Peter Forsberg, which could happen Tuesday.

Forsberg still uncertain for Tuesday
March 3, 2008

DENVER (AP) -Peter Forsberg skated with long, effortless strides from blue line to blue line before firing off a laser wrist shot during practice Monday, his first workout with the Colorado Avalanche since re-signing last week.

He looked like the Forsberg of old, but when asked about playing Tuesday against Northwest Division rival Vancouver, he hedged.

``It's a game-time decision. We'll see tomorrow morning,'' he said. ``To be honest, the foot felt like it was pulling and this was the first day of practice today.''

Forsberg is nursing an injured right foot but surprised nearly everyone last week by signing a deal to return to Colorado, where he won two Stanley Cups and one MVP award in nine seasons.

The 34-year-old agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal but will be paid about $1.1 million on a prorated basis because only six weeks remained in the regular season when he agreed.

Forsberg said he would decide after Tuesday morning's skate whether he will play that night.

``It's going to be tough to sit out, but I have to realize I haven't played a game in eight months and I just had the one practice,'' he said.

Forsberg practiced on a line that included Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk.

Colorado coach Joel Quenneville said he agreed with Forsberg's timing but still held out hope.

``There is a chance he could play tomorrow,'' Quenneville said. ``It's going to come from Peter because he knows his body a little better than us.''

Adding to the pressure is that the low-scoring Avalanche are without their fifth- and sixth-best scorers, Marek Svatos and Ryan Smyth, who were injured in Saturday's 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

``Even though those two guys went down the last game, I have to be honest with myself that when I come back I have to be ready to come back and play 100 percent,'' Forsberg said. ``I'm not going out to play not doing what I want to do.''

Forsberg said he would not suit up only to play on the power play.

Smyth lost consciousness after being elbowed into the glass by the Kings' Jack Johnson. Earlier in the game, Svatos injured a knee when he hit the boards.

Quenneville had little to report on the two players Monday.
