Sunday's Ice Plays
By Judd Hall

The specter of a long, boring gambling summer is fast approaching. That means we should be getting down on as much action as possible during these hockey playoffs.

New York was able to keep its Stanley Cup hopes alive with a Game 4 victory. Meanwhile, the Sharks now have a reasonable shot at winning their series over Dallas…not bad for a team that looked every bit the underachiever that many experts (including myself) have believed them to be.

Can the second round be stretched for a few more days? Good question.

New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins

I could have sworn that the Rangers we saw on the ice last Thursday had packed it in after Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

New York’s 3-0 win as a $1.35 home favorite (risk $135 to win $100) was all thanks to Henrik Lundqvist. The Vezina Trophy finalist came away with 29 stops to record his second career postseason shutout. Although he earned this victory as Pittsburgh assailed him with several shots during its four power plays. Lundqvist also was up to the challenge of quelling a couple of odd-man rushes as well. And let’s not forget about stonewalling a penalty shot.

Jaromir Jagr and Brandon Dubinsky teamed up on the top line by supplying all the goals for the Blueshirts. The duo combined to tally five points in the match, including assisting on a goal for each other.

The sportsbooks have tabbed the Penguins as $1.70 home favorites to move onto Eastern Conference Finals, with the total standing pat at five.

Recent history for this showdown definitely favors the Pens as the home team has gone 8-2 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings. The ‘over’ went 6-4 during that time.

The odds are pretty stacked against the Rangers to forcing it back to Madison Square Garden though as they’re 5-4 when following up a win on two days rest. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, is 8-1 on two days off after a defeat.

NBC is broadcasting this contest nationally starting at 2:00 pm EDT.

San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars

Not to belittle the effort the Sharks put into beating Dallas as $1.50 home favorites 3-2 in overtime, but they didn’t so much win it as Marty Turco lost it.

The Stars’ netminder gave up three exceptionally soft goals after being spotted a 2-0 lead heading into the final period. Turco was unable to answer San Jose’s offensive attack of blind abandon. And while the Sharks only took nine shots on goal, the physical play while making the attempts is what spelled success.

San Jose was able to start to believe that anything is possible thanks to Joe Pavelski finding the back of the net for the fifth time this postseason. That is surprising when you consider how listless the Sharks’ attack was for the first three games of the series.

Despite the aforementioned collapse, Dallas has been listed as a $1.35 home “chalk” at some sportsbooks, with the total holding still at five.

As reasonable as that bet looks, really pay close attention to backing the Sharks in this spot. The Stars are just 10-10 when playing a day after dropping a match. San Jose is exact opposite as evidenced by its 20-6 record under the same criteria.

Versus will be carrying this contest at 9:00 pm EDT.

Sunday's best NHL bets
COVERS.com

N.Y. Rangers at Pittsburgh -165, 5

Down 3-1 in the series and heading back to Pittsburgh, everybody has already written off Jaromir Jagr and the Rangers. But be careful with this game, because New York will come out swinging and Jagr means business in his old stomping ground.

The Rangers finally got to the Penguins in Game 4, rattling superstars Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby in a decisive 3-0 win. If they can do that again today and avoid the foolish penalties they took at the beginning of the series, this one could easily be heading back to the Big Apple for Game 6 tomorrow.

Pick: Rangers

San Jose at Dallas -145, 5

Uh-oh. The San Jose Sharks might have woken up and it’s not a moment too soon. Evgeni Nabokov has been spotty at best throughout this series, but looked to get his confidence back over the last two games.

San Jose needs him to be at the top of his game, otherwise Dallas will jump all over them early. Expect a tight-checking, defensive matchup.

Pick: under
