Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
COVERS.com

Washington Capitals at New York Islanders (-103, 6)

Life is good for Islanders center Mike Comrie. Not only is the newly-acquired free agent rumored to be dating Hillary Duff, he is off to a blistering start to his season. Comrie scored two goals for the second straight game in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Buffalo and his line of Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko have already combined for 16 points in two games.

Alexander Ovechkin and the Caps are off to their best start in five years. Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season Saturday, giving him 200 points in his brief NHL career. The Washington sniper had two goals in four games against the Islanders last season and he has four goals and two assists in seven career games.

Pick: Over

New Jersey Devils at Ottawa Senators (-159, 5)

About the only thing that could slow down the Senators today is that sleepy feeling after eating too much Thanksgiving turkey. This marks Thanksgiving weekend north of the border and Canadians across the country are feasting in celebration.

The Sens won't be able to afford a slow start against the team they knocked out of the playoffs last season, who'll be looking for payback in this afternoon matchup. Ottawa is off to a strong start, outscoring opponents 9-5 while winning its first three games.

After dropping its season opener against the Lightning, New Jersey rebounded with a 4-1 win at Florida on Saturday thanks in part to center John Madden's first two goals of the year.

Pick: Senators -159

Edmonton Oilers at Detroit Red Wings (-219, 5 1/2)

The undefeated Oilers' No. 1 goal for tonight's game is to try and shut down Henrik Zetterberg. The Wings forward has a goal and four assists in two games this season and the Red Wings are an amazing 37-1-2 since the end of the lockout when Zetterberg has a multipoint game.

Dwayne Roloson should be back in the crease for Edmonton after watching from the bench on Saturday. Roloson was the main reason behind the Oilers' first-round upset of the Red Wings in the 2005-06 playoffs.

If the contest ends up going to a shootout look out of the Oilers. They were 2-1-1 against the Red Wings last season, winning the final two contests in penalty shots.

Pick: Detroit -219

Edmonton Oilers +200 to shock Red Wings in Hockeytown

LT Profits Sports Group

The Oilers are off to a 2-0 start, and they have discovered an offense this year with eight goals so far. More importantly, they are 7-2 in the last nine head-to-head meetings with the Red Wings, with three of those victories coming here in Detroit. With the Wings in off a loss to lowly Chicago, take Edmonton as a big underdog.

Who2BetOn.com Sports Picks
The Edmonton Oilers are off to a 2-0 start, and they have given the Detroit Red Wings fits in recent years.

The Oilers have looked much better offensively in the early going than they did the entire second half of the season last year, as they have scored eight goals in their two games. Furthermore, their 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday came in front of backup goaltender Mathieu Garon, and their number one goalie Dwayne Roloson is expected back between the pipes tonight.

The Wings opened the season with an emotional 3-2 shootout win over the Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks, who eliminated Detroit in the Western Conference Finals last season. They then lost to the lowly Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 in another shootout Saturday though, and they are now facing an Oilers team that has beaten them in seven of the last nine head-to-head meetings. Moreover, three of those Edmonton wins came right here in Motown.

All things considered, this is a generous price on the Oilers here.

Free Pick: Oilers +200

Devils and (54) OTT Senators. Take "Under". Devils have the unlucky draw of playing their opening games on the road and today is the third in a row. The Devils lost their opener at Tampa 3-1 and then rebounded with a win in their second game at Florida, 4-1. Both of their games have gone UNDER the total. The Senators are a perfect 3-0 this year and without starting goalie Emery who will miss about another week. Gerber has been excellent in place of Emery between the pipes, allowing just five goals in three games (1.67 GAA average) including a shutout win over the Rangers last time out, 2-0. Devils not the kind of team that can outscore opponents so we look for tight game played between the blue lines here on Monday.

Take the UNDER!!!

Jimmy the Moose

Edmonton Oilers at Detroit Red Wings
Monday, October 8th, 7:35 P.M. EST EST

Both team's played the over in their last game. The over is 5-2-2 in Edmonton's last 9 games following a win. The Red Wings have played over the total in 5 of their last 7 games. The over is also 5-2 in the Wings last 7 games vs. Western Conference opponents. In Detroit's last 4 games following one day off to rest the over is 4-0. The last 2 meetings between the clubs have played over the total. Expect both team's to be successful on the power play tonight and eaily get this game over the total.

Play on: Over

Ben Burns

Game: Edmonton Oilers at Detroit Red Wings
Oct 8 2007 7:35PM

Prediction: Edmonton Oilers

Reason: Getting a very generous price, I feel that the undefeated Oilers are worth a look here. While the Wings are 1-1, the Oilers have gotten off to a 2-0 start. The Oilers were 2-1-1 against the Red Wings last season. In fact, if we look back further we find that the Oilers have taken seven of the last nine series meetings, going a profitable 9-5 (+9.9) the past three seasons. Consider taking the big price on EDMONTON.

Robert Ross

Game: Washington Capitals at New York Islanders Oct 8 2007 2:05PM
Prediction: under

Reason: Both teams are off to 2-0 starts. Washington has allowed but three goals in two games and beat division rival Carolina 2-0 in its last. Supporting angle says to Play Under - Any team against the total (WASHINGTON) - off a win against a division rival, undefeated on the season (38-11 over the last 5 seasons, 77.6%).
Take this one UNDER the total!
