MORNING LINE REPORT

Sometimes it pays to gamble. Sometimes it doesn’t. My gamble on the Columbus Blue Jackets last night didn’t work out and put a brief damper on an otherwise great night. Yesterday’s article plays went 3-1 and the Twitter additions were 2-1 with nice underdog hits on Florida and Minnesota (those were some really bad late openers yesterday and we also crushed the closing line value which is a good validation for my early season numbers). It was great to have some Saturday afternoon hockey and it set the whole day up nicely.

Poor Arizona remains the only NHL club without a win this season and it felt like last night was going to be their time until another third period meltdown. Now they’ll head out onto the road for a five game trip. What’s the NHL record for most consecutive losses to begin a season? That might be a popular Google search if things continue like this much longer.

We have a bit of a break in the schedule over the next couple of days with just one game tonight and two tomorrow but we’ll still search for some value and see what we can find.

VANCOUVER CANUCKS @ DETROIT RED WINGS

Projected Goaltenders
Vancouver – Jacob Markstrom/Anders Nilsson (unknown)
Detroit – Jimmy Howard (likely)

Injury Report
Vancouver – Edler (out), Eriksson (out)
Detroit – DeKeyser (out)

The Vancouver Canucks are 2-1-0 on their current five game East Coast road trip after a 4-2 win in Buffalo on Friday night. Vancouver’s lineup has been interesting to watch early on as they’re creating a bit of a match-up problem for teams with their surprising depth and ability to roll four solid lines, with no single line really being designated as the top unit. The supposed first line with the Sedins have been playing more third line type minutes while Horvat, Gagner, Vanek, Baertschi, Granlund, Burmistrov, Virtanen and Brock Boeser have been mixed and matched to create a couple of balanced scoring lines. And then you have fourth liner Derek Dorsett who only leads the team in scoring with four goals and five points.

With minutes being distributed fairly even among the forwards, it’s kind of taken away the home team’s advantage with the last change to match lines. The Canucks haven’t been outscored 5-on-5 in any game on this trip and if their special teams were better against Boston (4 powerplay goals allowed) they could easily have been 3-0.

The goaltending has been inconsistent so far and I don’t think anyone is really surprised by that. Anders Nilsson had one really great game then allowed four goals on 17 shots at Boston and was pulled just 11 minutes into the game. Jacob Markstrom has been either hot or cold. He’s made some outstanding saves at key times but also let in a few too many softies and his .902 save percentage isn’t cutting it as a number one goaltender.

The big news for the Red Wings is the contract holdout of Andreas Athanasiou is over. Ken Holland finally managed to sign the speedy winger to a one-year deal for $1.378 million. To clear the cap space needed Holland traded underperforming Riley Sheahan and a fifth-round draft pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for Tom Wilson and a third-round pick.

Athanasiou was in Switzerland but flew back to his home in Toronto yesterday. The team has applied for an expedited work visa which could take anywhere from 2-3 days to 10-12 days. Once that is approved, Athanasiou will be allowed to join the team in Detroit to practice. With the Wings heading out on the road for three games this week, I wouldn’t expect he’ll join them until their October 31st home game at the earliest.

On the ice, the Wings failed their litmus test this past week as they lost all three games to an upper echelon of teams against Toronto, Tampa Bay and Washington although they did play a much better game Friday night against the Caps and earned a point before losing in overtime.

Detroit have dropped two straight at the new Little Caesars Arena after a season opening win and with the team heading out of the road for seven of the next eight games after tonight there should be a little extra focus on getting a win for the fans.
We have some value on the home side tonight so we’ll pull the trigger here. The Canucks are playing their third game in four nights and four in six so hopefully the Wings can take advantage of the situation.
