Detroit Red Wings vs. Boston Bruins Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018
5th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Boston Bruins are trying to keep pace with the league-best Tampa Bay Lightning as they resume their six-game homestand against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. The Bruins are riding a three-game winning streak and trail first-place Tampa Bay by six points in the Atlantic Division with three games in hand on the Lightning.
Boston was less than three minutes from its first shutout loss since the second game of the season before rallying for a 2-1 victory over Montreal on Saturday, its second overtime victory in three games. "We've been through it so many times this year and different guys have stepped up numerous times," Bruins forward Brad Marchand said. "We know we have a lot of character and can rely on different guys every night." The Red Wings appeared destined to miss the playoffs for the second straight season, sitting nine points out of the eighth playoff spot and mired in a three-game slide. Detroit has dropped five straight in the series and has lost seven in a row in Boston, including a 3-1 defeat on Dec. 23.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, TVAS, Sportsnet, NESN (Boston)
ABOUT THE RED WINGS (26-29-10): Offense continues to be a major issue for Detroit, which has scored five times during the three-game skid and hasn't produced more than three goals in 11 straight games. "It's an easy time for frustration to build, and there's nothing wrong with being frustrated now and we should be," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "If you're not, you probably shouldn't be a competitor." Dylan Larkin has scored only nine goals, but he has collected five assists in seven games to give him a team-high 39 assists and 48 points.
ABOUT THE BRUINS (40-15-8): Already missing top goal scorer Patrice Bergeron, Boston's lineup will be further depleted with the absences of defenseman Charlie McAvoy and starting goaltender Tuukka Rask. McAvoy, who was hurt in Saturday's game, was wearing a knee brace Monday and has been ruled out while Rask is bothered by a "very minor" injury that is lingering. "You don't want to go through your whole lineup and start losing good players every night, but teams go through certain stretches and we're no different right now," coach Bruce Cassidy said.
OVERTIME
1. Marchand has two goals and five points in two matchups against Detroit this season.
2. Red Wings G Jimmy Howard has allowed eight goals in losing three starts (0-2-1) versus Boston this season.
3. Boston is 4-for-11 on the power play and 8-for-8 on the penalty kill in the past two games.
PREDICTION: Bruins 4, Red Wings 2

Montreal Canadiens vs. New Jersey Devils Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018
5th March 2018 by Gracenote
Every time it appears safe to pencil the New Jersey Devils into one of the postseason slots in the Eastern Conference, the club takes a downward turn. The struggling Devils will try to avoid their fourth losing streak of at least four games since the Christmas break when they host the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night.
New Jersey is holding down the top wild card spot but has managed only five goals during its three-game losing streak despite the wondrous exploits of red-hot Taylor Hall, who has registered points in all 25 games in which he has played in the 2018 calendar year. "I'd give it all up for a couple of wins," Hall said after Sunday's 3-2 home loss to Vegas. Montreal, which is 10 points out of the final playoff spot, learned Monday that captain Max Pacioretty will miss four to six weeks due to a knee injury sustained in Friday's game versus the New York Islanders. The Canadiens, who are 3-0-4 in their last seven games overall, have dominated the series with the Devils, winning five consecutive and earning points in six straight (5-0-1) in New Jersey.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, RDS, TSN2 (Montreal), MSG Plus (New Jersey)
ABOUT THE CANADIENS (25-29-11): Pacioretty, who scored at least 30 goals in each of the previous four seasons and was expected to be moved at last week's trade deadline, was the latest devastating injury for Montreal, which already has star goaltender Carey Price and defenseman Shea Weber sidelined. "It's tough to see guys like that go down with injuries. The three of them are a big part of our team," forward Alex Galchenyuk said. Young defenseman Victor Mete likely is done for the season with a fractured finger that will keep him out six weeks.
ABOUT THE DEVILS: (33-25-8): Hall became the eighth different player in the last 30 years to collect a point in at least 25 straight games, although his streak is recognized as an 18-game run since he sat out three contests due to injury. Hall extended his goal-scoring streak to four in a row and also assisted on a power-play tally by Sami Vatanen, giving the team a man-advantage goal in four straight games. "You get out there in favorable situations, and you want to produce," Hall said. "Our power play has found its groove again."
OVERTIME
1. Hall has 18 goals and 18 assists over the last 25 games.
2. Montreal recalled G Zach Fucale from Laval of the American Hockey League after starter Antti Niemi missed Monday's practice.
3. New Jersey has killed off 17 of 18 penalties over the past eight games.
PREDICTION: Devils 3, Canadiens 2

Vegas Golden Knights vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018
5th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Columbus Blue Jackets hope the comforts of Nationwide Arena will pay dividends as they open a season high-tying four-game homestand versus the expansion Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. The Blue Jackets, who salvaged the finale of their three-game trek by doubling up San Jose on Sunday, head back to Buckeye State where they own a 3-1-1 mark in their last five home contests.
Artemi Panarin scored twice in a 4-2 win over the Sharks to increase his point total to nine (five goals, four assists) in his past eight games for the Blue Jackets, who are clinging to a one-point lead over Florida for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The former Calder Trophy winner notched an assist and Matt Calvert scored a goal in Columbus' 6-3 setback in Vegas on Jan. 23, with the latter carrying a three-game assist streak into Tuesday's tilt. Former Blue Jacket William Karlsson failed to dent the scoresheet for just the second time in 14 outings in Sunday's 3-2 victory over New Jersey, but he's ready to rebound on Tuesday when he visits the city that he called home for parts of three NHL seasons. "I enjoyed my time here and I'm looking forward to the game. It should be fun," said the 25-year-old Swede, who netted two of his team-leading 35 goals in the first encounter with Columbus.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, AT&T Sportsnet-Rocky Mountains (Vegas), FS Ohio (Columbus)
ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (42-18-5): Former Blue Jacket Jonathan Marchessault has recorded 17 (four goals, 13 assists) of his club-best 65 points in his past 14 games overall and joined fellow forward David Perron with two assists in the first meeting against Columbus. The 29-year-old Perron has 25 points (seven goals, 18 assists) in his past 22 games and pushed his career-high total to 59 by scoring and setting up a goal on Sunday. Marc-Andre Fleury, who is boasting career-best statistics in goals-against average (2.24) and save percentage (.928), turned aside 29 shots in the first tilt versus the Blue Jackets to improve his mark to 9-4-2 against the franchise.
ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (33-28-5): Captain Nick Foligno likes what he sees out of his new line with rookie Sonny Milano and second-year forward Oliver Bjorkstrand. "They're just so talented and create so much," Foligno said. "I'm learning a lot from them too, and I hope they're learning from me, with some of the things we need to do to manage games." Foligno scored versus San Jose, Milano has two goals in his last three games while Bjorkstrand has three assists in his last two.
OVERTIME
1. Vegas' seventh-ranked power play has scored at least one goal in 16 of its last 20 outings, but Columbus' penalty kill has thwarted 22 of their last 25 short-handed situations over the last 10 games.
2. C Mark Letestu resides one point shy of 100 during his two stints with Columbus.
3. Golden Knights RW Reilly Smith is two goals shy of 100 and one assist short of 150 for his career.
PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 4, Golden Knights 3

Winnipeg Jets vs. New York Rangers Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018
5th March 2018 by Gracenote
The New York Rangers made a splash at the trade deadline for who they dealt, not who they acquired, but entering Tuesday's home contest against the Winnipeg Jets they still hold out hope in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Rangers sit five points behind Columbus for the final wild-card spot and, after losing seven games in a row, New York owns a three-game winning streak following Saturday's 3-2 victory at Edmonton.
"We obviously lost a lot of our top guys that we started the year with, so other guys are stepping up," Rangers defenseman Brady Skjei told the media after Saturday's victory. "Playing with a little bit of desperation." The Jets have dropped six points behind Central Division-leading Nashville despite Winnipeg winning five of its past seven games - the latest a 3-2 victory Sunday at Carolina in the opener of a six-game road swing. Forward Patrik Laine, voted NHL second star of the week Monday, scored twice Sunday and has three multi-goal games in his past four contests. "We created a lot of scoring chances and there were a couple more chances we could have buried," Laine told reporters after extending his points streak to eight games (10 goals, six assists).
TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), MSG Plus 2 (New York)
ABOUT THE JETS (39-17-9): Laine started the week tied for third in the NHL in goals (35), while captain Blake Wheeler ranked second in assists (56). Newly acquired center Paul Stastny scored the Jets' third goal Sunday, helping Connor Hellebuyck win for the sixth time in his past eight starts. Winnipeg has scored on the power play in seven of its past eight games and ranks second in the league in power-play percentage (24.6 percent).
ABOUT THE RANGERS (30-30-6): Henrik Lundqvist made 50 saves in Friday's victory over Calgary and Alexander Georgiev stopped 35 shots Saturday to earn his first NHL victory. Forward Ryan Spooner did not register a point against the Oilers, but has one goal and six assists in his first four contests since being traded from Boston. The Rangers began the week sixth in the NHL in home penalty kill (84.9 percent).
OVERTIME
1. Winnipeg sent G Michael Hutchinson to Manitoba of the AHL on Monday, opening the door for G Steve Mason (concussion) to return and potentially start Tuesday.
2. Lundqvist had surrendered 15 goals in his three previous games before allowing just one against the Flames.
3. Rangers F Jimmy Vesey scored the game-winning goal and Lundqvist made 37 saves to lead New York to a 3-1 victory in Winnipeg on Feb. 11.
PREDICTION: Jets 4, Rangers 3

Florida Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018
5th March 2018 by Gracenote
The red-hot Florida Panthers look to extend their season-high winning streak to seven games when they make a quick trip north to take on the NHL-best Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. The Panthers have climbed within one point of the second wild card in the Eastern Conference after sweeping through a six-game homestand, with another five straight at home coming after Tuesday's showdown.
"I feel like right now, we're in a great spot," Florida's leading scorer Aleksander Barkov told reporters. "We're winning games. We're playing great hockey. ... Right now, I don't remember how it was last year, but right now, everybody's together here and we know that our goal is to make the playoffs." The Panthers capped their perfect homestand with a 4-1 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday and will meet with Atlantic Division-rival Tampa Bay for the first time since late October. The Lightning have been struggling in the defensive end of late, allowing 10 goals in the last two games, but are 6-0-1 in their past seven contests after rallying from a pair of two-goal deficits in a 7-6 shootout win over Philadelphia on Saturday. "Anytime you're down a couple goals in different parts of the game, especially in the third, and you come back and win it's emotional," Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos told reporters after posting a career-high five points. "It shows guys care. Guys never gave up. We got some big goals and stayed with it."
TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Florida, FS Sun (Tampa Bay)
ABOUT THE PANTHERS (32-25-6): Goaltender Roberto Luongo has earned six wins in seven games since returning from a lower-body injury, boasting a .935 save percentage in that span after Sunday's triumph. "It's a veteran presence," Florida defenseman Keith Yandle told reporters. "He's the backbone of our team. He's a guy we lean on a lot." Barkov has recorded five goals during a four-game streak and 10 of his team-leading 64 points have come in the last six games while fellow forward Jonathan Huberdeau notched a pair of tallies and set up three others in the last six contests to sit second on the team with 58 points.
ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (45-17-4): Right wing Nikita Kucherov returned to the lineup Saturday after sitting out two games with an upper-body injury and registered three assists to push his league-leading total to 85 points. Stamkos owns six goals and six assists in his last nine games to increase his season total to 77 points while defenseman Victor Hedman has five in the past two contests to pull within one of his third 50-point campaign. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh (upper-body), acquired from the New York Rangers last week, is expected to sit out Tuesday and could make his debut Thursday against his former team.
OVERTIME
1. The Lightning won two of the three matchups in October with a combined 30 goals scored.
2. Florida RW Evgenii Dadonov has registered five goals and five assists in his last six games.
3. Tampa Bay LW Alex Killorn is two points from matching his career high of 41 in 2013-14.
PREDICTION: Lightning 4, Panthers 2

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Minnesota Wild Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018
5th March 2018 by Gracenote
Following a pair of ugly road losses, all it took for the Minnesota Wild to get back on track was a return to the Xcel Energy Center, where they have lost a league-low five times in regulation. Locked in a battle for third place in the Central Division, Minnesota looks to continue its success at home when it hosts the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night.
Eric Staal tuned up for a meeting with his former team by scoring in Sunday's 4-1 win over Detroit as the Wild bounced back from road defeats at Arizona (5-3) and Colorado (7-1). "Sometimes when you get shellacked, you just gotta forget it," Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau said. "If you dwell on it, it's like a golfer. If you have a bad shot and you keep thinking about that bad shot, the next one's going to be bad, too. You gotta let it go." Carolina, which is kicking off a three-game road trip Tuesday, was denied a third consecutive victory when it fell to visiting Winnipeg 3-2 on Sunday to fall two points behind Columbus for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "We're right there," said Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal, the younger brother of Eric. "We've got to put together a streak here, and it's got to be now."
TV: 8 p.m. ET, RDS, FS Carolina, FS North (Minnesota)
ABOUT THE HURRICANES (29-26-11): Jordan Staal scored against Winnipeg to give him points in all three games since he returned to the lineup following the death of his infant daughter. "I'm impressed and proud of how he and his wife have handled everything they've been through over the last few months," Eric Staal said. "It's been extremely difficult for them and our whole family. They are strong people." Teuvo Teravainen extended his goal-scoring streak to four games and has scored in six of his last seven contests.
ABOUT THE WILD: (37-22-8): Eric Staal continues to light up the scoreboard, notching his 14th goal in 16 games on Sunday to push his season total to 34 -- his highest mark since scoring 40 with Carolina in 2008-09. Rookie defenseman Nick Seeler sat out practice Monday after he had his face bloodied while trading heavy blows in a brawl with Detroit's Luke Witkowski on Sunday. "I think I owe him a steak dinner after that scrap," Wild forward Zach Parise said. "Standing up for teammates, you always appreciate that."
OVERTIME
1. Wild F Jason Zucker has scored six times in nine games to move within two of reaching 30 goals.
2. Hurricanes G Cam Ward is 3-1-3 with a 2.94 goals-against average versus Minnesota.
3. Wild F Luke Kunin will undergo surgery after suffering a torn ACL in Sunday's game.
PREDICTION: Wild 4, Hurricanes 2

Dallas Stars vs. Nashville Predators Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018
6th March 2018 by Gracenote
The Nashville Predators have been steamrolling through their schedule of late and look to keep moving forward when they begin a four-game homestand Tuesday against the Central Division-rival Dallas Stars. Nashville is hoping to set a franchise record with its ninth straight victory and move ahead of Tampa Bay, which it trails by one point in the race for the Presidents' Trophy with a game in hand.
The Predators, who have won eight in a row for the first time since Oct. 5-25, 2005, concluded a four-game road trip Sunday with a 4-3 overtime triumph at Colorado in which Filip Forsberg scored 1:07 into the extra session. Viktor Arvidsson helped set up the tally, giving him seven points (two goals) during his four-game streak. Dallas inched closer to third place in the Central on Monday, climbing within one point of Minnesota after dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to Ottawa. Tyler Seguin scored both goals in the setback, tying the game with 1:08 left in the third period to give him seven tallies and four assists during his six-game point streak.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southwest Plus (Dallas), FS Tennessee (Nashville)
ABOUT THE STARS (37-23-6): Seguin leads the team with 62 points and 36 goals, which is one shy of the career high he set in 2013-14 and matched the following season. Dallas was without Radek Faksa on Monday as the Czech center was sidelined with a foot injury. Esa Lindell also missed the contest because of an illness, allowing defenseman Julius Honka to get into the lineup for the first time since Feb. 11.
ABOUT THE PREDATORS (42-14-9): Ryan Ellis made the history books Sunday, joining Andy Sutton (Atlanta, 2003-04) as the only NHL defensemen to score a tying goal in the final three minutes of regulation in back-to-back team games. The 27-year-old Ellis also has set up a total of three tallies to give him five points in his last two contests. Blue-liner Roman Josi, who collected 12 points over a five-game span from Feb. 19-27, has missed the last two contests due to an upper-body injury and is listed as day-to-day.
OVERTIME
1. Predators C Mike Fisher did not play Sunday after recording a goal and a plus-2 rating at Vancouver two days earlier in his return from retirement.
2. Dallas recalled LW Roope Hintz from Texas on Monday but assigned him back to the American Hockey League club prior to the game against Ottawa.
3. Nashville RW Craig Smith, who has been a healthy scratch for the last two contests, is one game away from the 500th of his NHL career.
PREDICTION: Predators 4, Stars 2

Colorado Avalanche vs. Chicago Blackhawks Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018
5th March 2018 by Gracenote
Nathan MacKinnon has inserted his name into the Hart Trophy discussion in the midst of a career season with the Colorado Avalanche. Named the NHL's First Star of the Week for the second time this season, MacKinnon aims to keep the conversation going in his favor on Tuesday as the Avalanche open a two-game road trip against the Chicago Blackhawks.
MacKinnon collected six goals and as many assists during his five-game point streak to boost his league-best average to 1.35 points per contest. The 22-year-old Nova Scotia native has already set a career high for both goals (31) and points (77) for the Avalanche, who are 4-1-2 in their last seven to reside one point behind Los Angeles for the final postseason slot in the Western Conference. MacKinnon scored two goals and set up another on Oct. 28 in a 6-3 win over the Blackhawks, who have plummeted to the cellar in the Central with losses in 12 of their last 16 games (4-11-1). "We have some good stretches where we play pretty good, but then (there's) a little breakdown or something that's in the back of the net. It seems like every little mistake we make is costing us," Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith said.
TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Altitude (Colorado), WGN (Chicago)
ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (35-24-6): Mikko Rantanen is enjoying a feverish surge by scoring in back-to-back games to increase his point streak to four games (three goals, five assists) and his point total to 40 (13 goals, 27 assists) in his past 35. The 21-year-old Finn joined his linemate MacKinnon by scoring two goals and setting up another in the first meeting with Chicago. Matt Nieto has answered a 17-game stretch in which he recorded just one point by scoring in his third straight game in Sunday's 4-3 overtime loss to Nashville.
ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (28-30-8): Nick Schmaltz tallied in the first encounter versus Colorado and increased his point total to five (four goals, one assist) in his last five games overall by scoring twice in Sunday's 6-3 setback against Anaheim. Patrick Kane boosted his team-leading totals (24 goals, 38 assists, 62 points) with three goals and six assists in his past eight contests. Fellow forward Vinnie Hinostroza has eight points (one goal, seven assists) in his last nine outings after amassing 15 in his previous 26.
OVERTIME
1. Chicago G Anton Forsberg, who was blitzed for four goals in just over 30 minutes on Sunday, permitted five on 20 shots in under 27 minutes in the first encounter with Colorado.
2. Avalanche D Tyson Barrie, who had an assist in the first meeting versus the Blackhawks, has 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in his last seven contests.
3. Chicago's 28th-ranked power play is just 2-for-16 in the last seven games after scoring at least once in seven of its previous eight.
PREDICTION: Avalanche 5, Blackhawks 2

Washington Capitals vs. Anaheim Ducks Preview and Predictions 03-06-2018
5th March 2018 by Gracenote
Alex Ovechkin reached one milestone in his last game and aims to net another on Tuesday as the Washington Capitals open a three-game road trip against the Anaheim Ducks. Ovechkin scored to become the sixth player in NHL history with nine or more 40-goal seasons in Saturday's 5-2 win over Toronto at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.
Ovechkin recorded his 19th point (10 goals, nine assists) in 15 games with a first-period goal on Saturday, moving within two tallies of 600 for his decorated career. The three-time Hart Trophy recipient also set up Nicklas Backstrom's third-period goal and scored 1:58 into overtime as Washington rallied from a two-goal deficit to post a 3-2 win over Anaheim on Dec. 16. While the Capitals are clinging to first place in the congested Metropolitan Division, the Ducks have benefited from a 6-1-1 overall run and 6-0-2 stretch at Honda Center to creep within one point of second-place San Jose in the Pacific. "Guys are starting to find their role and play within it," said former Hart Trophy winner Corey Perry, who has 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in his last 14 games. "... Guys are having fun, and when you're winning, it's fun."
TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBCSN, NBCS Washington
ABOUT THE CAPITALS (37-21-7): Evgeny Kuznetsov is enjoying a late-season surge with 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) in his last 17 games, including scoring four times in the last four games to reach the 20-goal mark for the second time in his career. The 25-year-old Russian joined Backstrom with a goal and two assists versus the Maple Leafs, and both forwards also tallied in the first meeting with Anaheim. Braden Holtby, who snapped a six-game winless skid with a 27-save performance versus Toronto, improved to 3-1-0 in his career against the Ducks after turning aside 28 shots in the December tilt.
ABOUT THE DUCKS (33-21-12): Jakob Silfverberg, who scored in the first encounter with Washington, matched his point total for February with a pair of goals in Sunday's 6-3 victory over Chicago. "We've had a few guys, me included, that haven't been able to find the back of the net consistently," the 27-year-old Swede said. "Hopefully, this gets me going. We need everyone, especially at this time of the year." Fellow forward Rickard Rakell hasn't had that problem as he scored in three straight games for the third time this season, with five goals highlighting his six points on his current run to raise his team-high totals in both categories (27 goals, 54 points).
OVERTIME
1. Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf (club-best 36 assists) set up three goals in his second straight game and has 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in his last five.
2. Washington's fifth-ranked power play has scored six times in the last six contests.
3. The Ducks have thwarted 22 consecutive short-handed opportunities and 31 of 32 overall since Feb. 9.
PREDICTION: Ducks 3, Capitals 2
