Featured Games
Carolina Hurricanes (+122) vs. New York Islanders(-135)
There is nothing like an incredible goaltending duel in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and that proved to be the case in Game 1 of this series as the game was scoreless to regulation, with Carolina winning in overtime on a Jordan Staal goal, his fourth of the playoffs. Petr Mrazek out dueled Robin Lehner to earn the victory, stopping 31 shots for his second shutout of the playoffs.
Goaltending Matchup:
Petr Mrazek was brilliant in Game 1, stopping all 31 shots he faced. That gave him his third straight victory. Mrazek has a 2.22 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage through his first eight playoff games. Taking away the six goals he allowed in Game 5 against Washington, Mrazek has allowed just 13 goals through the other seven games.
Robin Lehner was let down by his offense, as the Islanders goaltender stopped 31 shots before giving up the game-winner 4:04 into overtime. Lehner continues to be impressive, posting a 1.36 goals-against average and a .958 save percentage. He has allowed a single goal in each of the last four games.
Trends to Watch:
The Carolina Hurricanes are…
36-17 in their last 53 games.
12-4 in their last 16 conference semifinals games
24-61 in their last 85 games on the road when facing a team with a winning record at home.
The New York Islanders are…
6-1 in their last seven games.
5-1 in their last six games against teams with a winning record.
0-5 in their last five conference semifinals games.
Stat Pack: (Playoff Numbers)
Hurricanes:
Goals For: 2.75
Goals Against: 2.50
Power-Play: 10.3%
Penalty Killing: 78.6%
Islanders:
Goals For: 2.80
Goals Against: 1.40
Power-Play: 11.8%
Penalty Killing: 93.3%
Prediction
It was not surprising that sluggish after having a week off between games. There was a little rust, and that should be worn off now as this is again the Islanders absolutely have to win. Going down 0-2 heading to Carolina where the Hurricanes have been dominating in these playoffs is likely to lead to New York being swept. They simply have to win, and that sense of urgency should give them the edge in this game.
The total is set at 5.0 for this contest and with how Game 1 developed the under seems like the smart bet here as well. The total has gone under in four of the last five meetings between these two teams, and we learned our lesson in Game 1 when we thought it would go over. plus, neither team’s power-play units have been particularly good and New York has been dominating at killing off penalties. Take the New York Islanders to win. 2-1.
Colorado Avalanche (+127) vs. San Jose Sharks (-140)
The red-hot Colorado Avalanche looked like they were going to steal Game 1 when they scored 2:10 into the contest and had a 2-1 lead a little less than four minutes into the second period. However, San Jose battled back with four unanswered goals as Brent Burns scored a goal and added three assists to lead the Sharks to a 5-2 victory. Joe Thornton added a goal and an assist for the victorious Sharks.
Goaltending Matchup:
Philipp Grubauer looked dominating through the first 25 minutes of this game, but San Jose figured him out about halfway through the contest. He gave up four goals on 26 shots, giving Grubauer a 2.24 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage through his first six contests of the playoffs. For Avalanche fans a little worried, don`t be. Grubauer gave up three goals in the opening contest of the series against Calgary, then allowed seven total goals over the final four games. He knows how to make adjustments.
Martin Jones was outstanding in net for San Jose, stopping 26 of 28 shots. He now has a 3.03 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage. More importantly, Jones has won four straight games in net for the Sharks.
Trends to Watch:
The Colorado Avalanche are…
4-1 in their last five games.
10-23 in their last 33 games on a Sunday.
3-13 in their last 16 conference semifinals games.
The San Jose Sharks are…
5-1 in their last six games at home.
4-0 in their last four games.
7-3 in their last 10 games on a Sunday.
Stat Pack: (Playoff Numbers)
Avalanche:
Goals For: 3.17
Goals Against: 2.67
Power-Play: 21.4%
Penalty Killing: 78.3%
Sharks:
Goals For: 3.50
Goals Against: 3.38
Power-Play: 22.9%
Penalty Killing: 71.9%
Prediction
It would be easy to look at how well San Jose is playing and how they dominated the second half of Game 1 and feel that the Sharks are likely going to dominate this contest. That is likely what the Calgary Flames thought after dominating Game 1 of their series, only to see Grubauer hold them to two goals or less over each of the next four games. You can be sure that the Sharks will not be cocky about this contest and that the Avalanche will rebound to play a much better game. However, it is not going to be enough as they will fall behind in the series 0-2 heading home.
The total is set at 6.0 in this contest. The two teams went over in the last one just as we had predicted, but we see this going slightly under in this game. While it may be easy to push and expect a 4-2 final, we go with San Jose winning in overtime 3-2.
